Abstract

The aims of this research are (1) to describe the crimes committed by Bigger Thomas as themain character in Richard Wright’s novel entitled Native Son, and (2) to analyze the influenceBigger Thomas’ self-expression on against racismin Richard Wright’s novel entitled Native Son.The data are words, phrases, clauses, and sentences, collected by document analysis, taken froma novel entitled Native Son that is written by Richard Wright. These data are then called asquotation. The theories used to analyze the data are racism and crime. Then sociological andpsychological approaches are used to analyzed  the data in this research.  The crimes that arecommitted by Bigger Thomas in the novel are assault, negligent homicide, murder, and  fraud.The self-expressions of Bigger are hatred, fear, powerless, desperation, ashamed, and prejudice.

Abstract

The research aimed to describe the phatic utterance functions expressed by the characters in themovie entitled The Secret Life of Pets. This was descriptive-qualitative research. The data of thestudy were the words, phrases, and clauses expressing the phatic utterances in the movie. Thedata collection technique was content analysis. The data analysis technique was ethnographic;therefore, domain analysis, taxonomy analysis, componential analysis, and cultural themeanalysis were carried out. The data was analyzed on the basis of the socio-pragmatic approach.The research showed that there were four functions of phatic utterances found in the movieentitled The Secret Life of Pets, namely breaking the silence, having small talks, keeping theconversation going, and expressing solidarity; the most dominant function was breaking thesilence. Breaking the silence as the dominant phatic utterance strengthened the notion thatphatic utterance was not informational. This dominance was closely related to the object of theresearch in which breaking the silence followed by having small talks were very important intheir everyday life.  Key words: socio-pragmatics, phatic utterances functions

Abstract

Memes are internet popular culture. They have so many topics, and one of them is darkhumor. Dark humor treats some taboo matters such as deformities, murder, suicide, disease,tragedy, pedophilia, and other in a cynical way. This research focuses on analyzing types ofimplicature and the humorous devices found in the dark memes; therefore, this study aims todiscover what kind of implicature is contained in the dark meme and what kind of humorousdevices that is used in the dark meme. This research is descriptive qualitative research, andthe data used in this research are dark memes and retrieved from reddit.com. The analysisshows that conversational implicatures and conventional implicatures are found in the darkmemes texts. There are some topics that are implicitly mentioned in the dark memes such asdeformities, necrophilia, sexual abuse, disease, murder, violence, stereotypes, pedophilia,death, tragedy, and suicide. Some humorous devices that are found in the dark memes areirony, satire, understatement, wit, aphorism, and sarcasm. Keywords: meme, dark memes, humor, implicature, humorous devices

Abstract

The research aimed to discuss discrimination in Pramoedya Ananta Toer “ThisEarth of Mankind”. The objectives of the research were to describe the NyaiOntosoroh characterization. After described the Nyai Ontosoroh characterizationin the novel, would be kinds of discrimination that Nyai character suffered. Thetheories that used in this study were characterization, post-colonialism, setting,and discrimination. Theory of characterization is useful for knowing thedevelopment of characters in literary works such as novel. Theory of postcolonialismused to understand the civilization and improvement serves as theimpact experienced by the third world societies in the past, present, even in thefuture. The setting theory was to describe the society that lived in the specificplace and time means post-colonialism era. The discrimination theory was toanalysis the events related to discrimination and the form of discrimination itselfthat exists in literary works such as novels. The Innocence theory was to supporttheory of symbol Innocence. The technique of data collecting was libraryresearch, while the method of this research was descriptive. There were fourapproaches used in the study. They were feminist, moral, psychological andsociological approaches. The result of this research showed about discriminationthat suffered Indonesian people because of the Dutch related to the novel ThisEarth of Mankind by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The statement of problems in thisresearch divide into two. First problem as followed a well- educated woman, astraight forward woman, brave and wise woman, responsible woman, respectedwoman, a persevered woman, realistic and persistent woman, and a competitivewoman. The second problem is as followed unable to fill the gabs, judge assinner, betrayed by her parents, treated like slaves, judged as being a badinfluence, accused as a murderer, accused as a thief, and treated unfairly legally.  Keywords: Discrimination, Characterization, Suffering

Abstract

This research is entitled "Analysis of Politeness Strategies in Directive Speech in Mission:Impossible - Fallout". The purpose of this research is to find out the utterance that tellssomeone and contains elements of politeness strategies. The object of this research isMission: Impossible – Fallout. It is a 2018 American spy film directed by ChristopherMcQuarrie. In this study, the method used is descriptive qualitative because the researcherwill examine and interpret the data. The data found is in the form of a dialog. The step to getdata is to collect data sources from subtitles. After that, the researcher reads, selects, andanalyzes dialogues containing politeness strategies in directive speech. The results of thisstudy, researchers found 70 data. Then, from 70 data, there are 2 types of politenessstrategies, namely positive politeness, and negative politeness. Positive politeness is found in8 data, negative politeness is found in 62 data. Abstract

Emotional isolation originates from traumatic experiences in a person’s past that are hiddenfrom consciousness and may cause problems during adulthood in the form of obsessive orcompulsive behaviors. These behaviors were portrayed in Philip Carey, the main character inWilliam Somerset Maugham’s novel Of Human Bondage. The research was qualitative, and thetechnique of collecting data was ethnographic. The approaches used were the psychologicalapproach and sociological approach. This research used psychoanalysis theory: personalprinciples and defense mechanism by Sigmund Freud, which contains about the conscious andunconscious side of humans and the application in their behavioral life. Emotional isolationbehaviors portrayed in Philip Carey were a self-conscious person, an introvert, an impulsive,and an attention seeker. Philip Carey’s abnormal behaviors occurred for some reasons. First, hedid not have parents taking care of him. Second, he had to live with his cruel and abusive uncle.He also became an object of bullying because of his clubfoot. These behaviors influenced PhilipCarey’s life. At first, he became self-conscious and delusional. Next, he failed to control his mostburdensome bondage: passion. Abstract

The objectives of the research were (1) to describe the expressive utterances in Captain Americamovie; and (2) to analyze the translation techniques used in translating expressive utterances inCaptain America movie. This research was qualitative and, therefore, descriptive too. Thesource of data was the English transcript of Captain America movie and its Indonesian subtitle.The data collection technique was document analysis while the data collection analysis wasetnographic. Five expressive utterances found in the script of the movie entitled CaptainAmerica: The first Avenger. They were denying, admitting, apologizing, congratulating, andthanking. The first two, namely denying and admitting, were the most dominant. The expressiveutterances were translated with twelve translation techniques, namely established equivalent,modulation, deletion, transposition, literal translation, adaptation, discursive creation, addition,explicitation, compensation, and generalization. Abstract

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is an English proficiency test of language skillwhich is as the most well-liked and followed by people in the world. Postgraduate program ofState Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Ponorogo Issued a policy which obligates the students to takelanguage proficiency test (TOEFL) as one of obligatory requirements to pass the thesisexamination. The kind of this research is descriptive qualitative. The result of the research showsthat Techniques used by tutors in the TOEFL preparation class are Drill, Warm-up,Dialogue/Narrative presentation, discussion, and checking. The use of those techniques is tohelp students in understanding the materials.The existence of TOEFL preparation class is veryimportant. Abstract

The research aimed to discuss religious symbol in William Blake’s The Little GirlLost and The Little Girl Found. The objectives of the research were to describewhat the meaning of symbol related to religious symbol. The symbols would berelated to religious symbols as portrayed in the Bible. The theories used in thisstudy were symbolism, religious symbol, Garden of Eden, Innocence, Creation,and Jesus. The technique of data collecting was library research, while themethod of this research was descriptive. There were two approaches used in thisstudy. They were structural and formalist approach. According to the findings ofthis study, religious symbols in The Little Girl Lost and The Little Girl Foundcontained four symbols: the Garden of Eden, Innocence, Creation, and Jesus. TheGarden of Eden explained the situation of Adam and Eve, and the Tree ofKnowledge. Innocence described the main character of this poem, a little girlnamed Lyca. Creation explained the process of creation in this universe, done byGod and the Sabbath. Abstract

The research aimed to discuss the portrait of industrial revolution and symbol inBritain in William Wordsworth’s The World is too Much with Us. The objectivesof the research were to describe how the industrial revolution in Britain portrayedand what the meaning of symbol related to industrial revolution. The themeswould be related to industrial revolution as portrayed in the poem. The theoriesused in this study were setting, industrial revolution, materialism, allusion, andsymbol. The technique of data collecting was library research, while the methodof the method of this research was descriptive. There were three approaches wereused in this study. They were formalistic, historical, and structural approach. Thefirst result of this research showed that industrial revolution in The World is tooMuch with Us contained four issues, that is, political issues, economical issues,transition from nature to technological changes, and the people of natural world.Political issues explained about population, ambition, power abuse, andcampaign. Economical issues explained about the money, labor, and urge.Transition from nature to technological changes explained about the movement ofsociety from ancient to modern era. The people of natural world explained aboutthe people who choose to live in the ancient and be devote their live-in paganism.The second result of this research showed that the symbol related to industrialrevolution in The World is too Much with Us contained three symbols, that is,nature, poverty, greed and possession. Symbol of nature explained about thecondition of an ecosystem and the society in industrial revolution era. Povertyexplained about the poor rural families have been relocated to towns and cities towork in factories.
