Abstract

Forest stand structure could be used as one of  the variables in deciding the possibility to harvest forest product. On logged-over forests, data and information over stand structure could become the basis for decision making for harvesting. To measure and analyze yield on logged-over forest, each forest management unit (IUPHHK) is obligated to establish Permanent Sample Plots (PSPs) for monitoring the growth and yield of  the managed stand. In some of  the plots, maintenances and thinning treatments are applied while other plots are not treated.  The results, after several years of  observations, showed that there was a difference in stand structure (tree number) of  each diameter class both in plots with treatment and without treatment. The rate of  in-growth, up-growth and mortality varied between plots without and with treatment in each diameter class and length of  time after harvesting. The average diameter increment of  trees in the stands of  the untreated plots was higher (0.60 cm yr-1) compared to the treated plots (0.55 cm yr-1).

Abstract

Ramin (Gonystylus bancanus (Miq) Kurz.) is a trade name of timber produced from a group of Gonystylus species. It is a well-known species because of its high timber quality and value. Ramin natural population has been decreasing sharply since the last two decades due to over exploitation, and nowadays leads to extinction. The objective of  this research was to analyze the growth of ramin plantation on various sites.  Data were collected from February to April 2005 through field survey on five sites of peat-swamp forest areas in four provinces, Riau, Jambi, West and Central Kalimantan. The result showed that ramin annual early growth varied across sites.   It grew better on deep peat soil (3 - 4 m in depth) and under moderate shading (55 - 60%) during early growth. The highest early height growth (52.27 cm/year) occurred at Sei Bakau, West Kalimantan.  Whereas, it highest early diameter growth (0.73 cm/year) was found at Rokan Hilir, Riau. The characteristics of site are very important for a successful growth of ramin plantation, including peat depth and level of shading. Annual early growth of ramin as along in line with increasing of the plant age, namely a four- times increase of plant age (from 1.6 - 2 years to 6.5 - 7.3 years), the annual early height and diameter growth decreased until they reached a half and one third of the starting values. Since the growth of ramin is very slow, it is necessary to find and develop technologies to accelerate growth rate of  the ramin plants. Application of mycorrhizal fungal inoculum is a promising technology, but their role in promoting ramin growth and the needed cost must be tested and analyzed under various conditions of the peat-swamp soils in Indonesia.

Abstract

Mangrove is a unique ecosystem that has complex biotic and abiotic components. Soil and water microorganisms have function as decomposer in mangrove forest ecosystem.  This paper studies the soil and water microorganisms' diversity, their potential, function in ecosystem and their role as environmental parameters in mangrove area of  Teluk Kelumpang, Selat Laut and Selat Sebuku Natural Reserve (Kelautku Natural Reserve).  Data of  soil and water microorganisms were recorded from soil and water samplings then analyzed in the laboratory.  Results show that benthos in Selat Sebuku figure the highest diversity index.  Anadara granosa  is one of  the common benthos found in Selat Sebuku.  In contrary the phytoplankton in Selat Sebuku is the lowest value compared to the other two locations, due to the settlements in the locations and it was suspected that Selat Sebuku has a relatively larger wave exposure than the two other locations.  In addition, input of organic matters from the settlements in Teluk Kelumpang and Selat Laut is also effected  by the growth of   phytoplankton.  Cyanophyta found in Teluk Kelumpang and Selat Laut was genera of  Oscillatoria that showed high tolerance genera to  the environment conditions.

Abstract

Information about fertility variation of flowering trees in seed orchard including determining the quality of seed production and estimating the genetic diversity are still lacking. This paper evaluates fertility variation, effective population size and genetic diversity among cajuput trees in seedling seed orchard at Paliyan, Gunungkidul for optimizing seed orchard management. A total of 160 trees were observed in three flowering periods of 2011-2013. The fertility based on the number of flowers and fruits were registered for each tree at the age of 12, 13 and 14 years. Results show that there are similar patterns of fertility after three years observation. Sibling coefficients (Ψ) which show fertility variation during three flowering periods are 1.39, 1.25 and 1.43 respectively. They show deviation from random mating, because of individual imbalance for producing flowers and fruits. However, the number of fertile trees was comparatively higher at 2011. More than 15 families of effective population size were recorded each year and supported more than 75% individuals in seed orchard to contribute flowers and seeds. High value of genetic diversity was calculated based on fertility variation (0.965, 0.967 and 0.957, respectively). Fertility variation led to consequence on seed deployment, including seeds of fertile families which should be collected equally and mixed to compose equal proportion of seeds and to avoid domination of highly fertility families and genetic drift. Silvicultural treatments in seed orchard management were indispensable to promote fertility uniformity and to increase effective population size in seed orchard for obtaining maximal genetic gain.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the most correlated soil and physiographic factor with the site index of teak. Tree height and stand age were recorded from seventy-three plots located in Central Java, Indonesia, to determine site index. Size of each plot was 0.1 ha. Measured site properties measured were percent slope, elevation, slope position, slope length, dominant topographic form, aspect, and thickness of A horizon. Soil samples from A and B horizon were analyzed for soil color, soil texture, available phosphorous, total nitrogen, and organic matter content.  Analysis indicated that the site index of teak was positively correlated with thickness of A horizon and westerly aspects, and negatively correlated with clay content of A horizon and elevation. A multiple regression using these variables produced an R2 of 0.55.

Abstract

Bamboo-based agroforestry is suitable for soils which are poor in nutrient. The characteristics of bamboo and the rapid closure of  its canopy improve soil cover, soil nutrient availability and soil moisture  content,  and  prevent  erosion  by reducing surface runoff. The  research was aimed at determining the factors that influenced surface runoff and the availability of soil organic matter (SOM) in the bamboo-based agroforestry in East Lombok. Research was done from March 2010 to March 2011 in Lenek Daya village, Aikmel sub-district, East Lombok district. The research plots were located on slopes of 0-15o, 30-45o, and 45-65o; with bamboo canopy closures of 0-25%, 25-50%, 50-75%, and over 75%. The research involving 12 plots, each in 4 x 12 m size. Measurements included surface runoff, bamboo canopy closure, weeds and bamboo leaves litter weight, rainfall depth and duration, dissolved sediment, and soil physical and chemical properties as well as SOM. Correlation and multiple linear regression tests were used in data analysis. The results of the regression tests showed a change in surface runoff which was influenced by changes in bamboo canopy closure, rain duration, rain intensity and soil sand fraction, each by -0.019, 0.418, 0.049 and -0.065 respectively. Rain duration was the highest influencing variable, whereas bamboo canopy closure significantly decreased surface runoff. Bamboo canopy closure had no correlation with the increase of SOM. But, the increase of SOM had correlation with the increase of  soil cation exchange capacity (CEC). The positive impact of  bamboo canopy closure  on  Regosol soil fertility in  bamboo-based  agroforestry land  was determined  by  land management intensity which could increase the availability of SOM and decrease phosphorus element loss due to leaching of nutrient.

Abstract

Timber extraction from felling area to road side is not an easy job. This activity facing a number of  difficulties particularly due to geo-biophysical conditions, such as steep terrain, up and/or down-hill, valley or river-to be crossed, slippery road and also the size of the timber and low accessibility. To anticipate those obstacles two engineering designs of the skyline system had been tried, the so called Expo-2000 Generation-1, using gasoline engine of  6 HP (G-1), and Expo-2000 Generation-3 using dieselengine of  12 HP (G-3). G-1 model has been tested in Cimeong and Rancaparang in 2011. G-3 model has been examined in Cibatu Canjur and Cibaliung Banten in 2013. This paper evaluates the modification of skyline system for steep terrain and to compare the performance between two modified skyline systems, in term of productivity and cost. The data collected included working time, log volume extracted, log extraction distance and fuel used. Data were analyzed to get the average productivity and cost of operation. Result show that prototype G-3 with logs in horizontal position at a distance of  130-430 m, can extract logs averaging 1.72 m3/hr, at a cost of  about Rp 80,346/m3, while prototype G-1 and logs in vertical position at a  distance of  about 50-320 m, could only extract logs averaging ± 0.85 m3/ hr at a cost of about Rp 156,351/m3. It suggests that prototype Expo-2000 G-3 is more effective for log extraction logs in steep terrain.

Abstract

Establishment of seed orchard is aimed at producing good quality seeds which is an important activity for breeding program. Seed orchard is also a base population, thus its genetic diversity is depending on its design and composition (provenance, family and individual tree). Selection of an individual tree in seed orchard is needed for the enhancement of  retaining good-character trees. However, selection of individual tree can change the genetic diversity of seed orchard, and the degrees to which the genetic diversity will change depend on the used selection methods. In order to investigate the effects of selection methods, 4 simulations of selection methods based on height, diameter and stem performance of individual trees were used. The differences among the 4 methods were the ranking of individual trees those selected, and families and provenances those have been represented. Seedling seed orchard of Acacia mangium in Wonogiri, Central Java was used as materials.Analysis of genetic diversity was carried out using AFLP markers. Nine primer combinations were used to produce 1025 AFLP banding patterns. Among those banding patterns, only 109 were polymorphic markers. No significant effect of individual tree selection was revealed in this study. Even though the selection was done intensively, only 7.1% of genetic diversity was reduced. In other words, the selection activity did not reduce the genetic diversity of seed orchard significantly. The result is important for developing future tree improvement of A. mangium, including development of hybrid between A. mangium and A. auriculiformis.
