Abstract

The experiment has been conducted on utilizing different types of charcoal as growth-stimulating agents by adding each of them to the growing media (i.e. soil stuff) of red pepper plant; and subsequently evaluating their effects on its growth characteristics/ responses. There were three types of agents used and added to the media, i.e. rice-husk charcoal, bamboo charcoal, and sawdust-mixed charcoal. respectively. For comparative purposes, were also measured the growth responses of the red pepper plant whereby its growing media were added with compost as well as the Bokasi rice-husk charcoal compost, besides the ones in the medium without the addition of any growth agents (as control). This experiment revealed some remarkable results. as follows:•              Additions of 5 % bamboo charcoal or l 0 % rice-husk charcoal could increase the height growth of the red pepper plant, in comparison with the one grown on the control medium:• Additions of 10 % rice-husk charcoal could increase the stem diameter of the plant by 11 % compared to the one on the control medium;•              Likewise, additions of 5 % and 10 % sawdust-mixed charcoal could each increase the stem diameter by consecutively l1 % and 10 %, in comparison with the control;•              Additions of 10 % bamboo charcoal brought about the best effect with respect to the increase in the number as well as the weight in red-pepper fruits in their first harvest (i.e. 3-month age), compared to the control:•              Additions of 10 % rice- husk charcoal, 5 % bamboo charcoal, and 10 % sawdust-mixed charcoal each brought about also the best effect with respect to the increase in the dry weight of the plant, i.e.consecutively 2.0, 2.0, and 1.8 times as such as that of the control;•                              Average amount of C02 absorbed by the red- pepper plants for 3 months was 0.10-0.88 gram per plant. The highest C02 absorption was achieved by the corresponding plants with addition of 10 % sawdust-mixed charcoal (i.e. 1.88 gram C02 per plant), followed in decreasing order by the ones added with 10% rice-husk charcoal and 10 % bamboo charcoal (i.e. 1.67 gram C02per plant and 1.34 gram C02 per plant, respectively).

Abstract

Tanaman jarak pagar memiliki prospek untuk dikembangkan sebagai tanarnan konservasi tanah dan air, disamping juga tanaman tersebut memiliki berbagai manfaat. Aneka pemanfaatan tanaman tersebut  antara lain: minyak dari biji sebagai bahan baku pernbuatan  biodiesel, selain itu limbah tanaman dan limbah proses dapat dibuat berbagai produk yang bernilai ekonomis seperti gliserin, makanan  ternak, arang aktif, pulp  kertas, papan  serat dan lain-lain. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menyediakan informasi dan teknologi tepat guna pembuatan pulp kertas dan papan serat dari kayu tanaman jarak pagar yang sudah tidak produktif  serta pemanfaaran kayu tanaman tersebut dari hasil pangkasan.Hasil penelitian pembuatan pulp kertas menunjukkan kayu jarak pagar  berserat pendek, kayunya sangat ringan, dinding tipis, bilangan Runkel < 1. Sifat tersebut menunjukkan bahwa kayu jarak pagar dapat dibuat pulp kertas dengan  kualitas medium. Pengaruh NaOH dan waktu pemasakan dapat meningkatkan   nilai indeks  retak,  indeks sobek  dan indeks tarik pulp, sedangkan pengaruhnya terhadap gramatur dan opasitas tidak  nyata. Penggunaan   persentase  soda 10%  dibandingkan  dengan konsentrasi    5% dan 15%  menunjukkan hasil  yang terbaik yaitu rendahnya angka konsumsi alkali dan rendahnya bilangan permanganat, namun juga memberikan rendemen pulp terendah. Hasil penelitian papan serat menunjukkan, kayu jarak pagar juga baik untuk dibuat papan serat. Pengaruh konsentrasi NaOH dan  konsentrasi    perekat   phenol   formaldehida  dapat   meningkatkan  kerapatan,   keteguhan tarik, lentur  dan penyerapan   air.  Sedangkan kadar air,  pengembangan  volume   dan pengembangan tebal cenderung   menurun.  Pada konsentrasi  soda 15%  dibandingkan dengan konsentrasi   5% dan 10%, menunjukkan hasil terbaik.  Semua sifat fisik papan serat memenuhi standar FAQ.

Abstract

Ministry of forestry requires the forest concession holders to fill in logs administrative forms containing log records to supervise logs production and circulation in forest concessions. However, large amount of logs produced has prevented the provincial forest service and forest district from conducting through examination on the documents turned in by concessionaries.In this study, a computer program intended to help accomplishing the task is created and tried out documents that must be filled in at logyard and logpond of concession. Using simulated logs data the program run on PC could find some deviation in the documents presented in terms of logs statistics.

Abstract

Kayu  Eucalyptus  deglupta  di konversi  da/am perangkat  gasifikasi fluidized bed dengan faktor udara 0,2-0,4. Tujuan penelitian  ini ialah untuk membuat data dasar mengenai : komposisi,  suhu,  hasil, perolehan  kembali  energi dan nilai kalor gas yang dihasilkan  dari gasifikasi  kayu tersebut pada  kondisi  yang  terkendali  dengan  baik,  sehingga  dapat dijadikan  dasar penilaian  bagi jenis  kayu  lainnya.Komponen utama gas yang dihasilkan terdiri dari: hidrogen, karbondioksida,   karbonmonoksida,   metana  dan nitrogen;  sementara  etena dalam jumlah  kecil. Nilai kalor gas bervariasi dari 2,8 hingga 5,4 MJ/Nm3 pada suhu antara 723 sampai  1021°C.  Hasil gas naik dari 1,5 hingga 3,9 kg gas/kg  bahan  baku  (bebas air dan abu) sementara faktor  udara naik  dari 0,22 hingga 0,57.

Abstract

An  investigation on the effect of slopes and load volumes  on the productivity  of hand lorry was carried out  at Padangan Forest  District, Unit II Perum Perhutani,  East Java, in 1983.  In the investigation,  four  levels of slopes  (i.e. 3, 4, 5, and 6 percent), four  levels of  load volumes  (i.e. 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0 m3) and the crew of 4 workers were used.  The objective was to find  the productivity of  hand  lorry  opearating  on several slopes  and  with  several load volumes. The results reveal that:The productivities of log hauling by hand lorry ranged from : 7.16 to 25.09  m3km/hour   with an average of 16.46  m3km/hour.Higher slope and load volume  caused the decrease in lorry productivity.The relation  of productivity (Y), slope (X 1) and load volume (X2) can  be expressed  by  the following  equation  of linear multiple regression: Y  = 48.626 - 2.199X1 -  5.342X2 with  R2 = 0.58Slopes and load volumes  have highly significant  effect  on productivities.

Abstract

Asap cair dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan pengawet pangan. Salah satu bahan penghasil asap cairadalah limbah tempurung nyamplung yang pemanfaatannya masih belum banyak dilakukan. Penelitianini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh suhu dan lama pirolisis terhadap sifat fisiko kimia asap cairtempurung nyamplung. Penelitian asap cair dilakukan terhadap level suhu 200 C, 300 C, 400 C, 500 Cdan waktu proses 5 jam dan 7 jam. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa asap cair terbaik diperoleh padasuhu perlakuan 500 C selama 5 jam yaitu; rendemen 45,3%, berat jenis 1,009 g/ml, kadar fenol 3,95%,dan kadar asam 9,47%.

Abstract

Ekstrak kulit sembilan jenis tumbuhan yang ditemukan di lokasi Taman Nasional (TN) Lore Lindu  telah diteliti potensi antioksidan dan efek sitotoksiknya. Aktivitas antioksidan diuji dengan menentukan nilai peroksida(POV) menggunakan metoda iodometri, sedangkan uji toksisitasnya dengan menghitung  kematian larva udang (Artemia salina) menggunakan metoda Brine Schrimp Lethality Test (BSLT). Hasil pengujian menunjukkan tiga komponen bioaktif (saponin, flavonoid, dan polifenol) terbanyak diperoleh pada 3 jenis tumbuhan yang memiliki POV rendah, yaitu Dysoxylum gaudichaudianum, Gardenia augusta, dan Nauclea orientalis. Efek sitotoksik paling mencolok (Lc50 < 200 μg/ml) diperoleh pada ekstrak Koordersiodendron  pinnatum (170,86 μg/ml), Nauclea orientalis (182,89 μg/ml), dan Kleinhovia hospita (191,35 μg/ml).

Abstract

To minimize illegal logging in natural production forest, one of concession forest in Kalimantan has initiated to do a joint bussines logging with a community wellfare cooperative. The aim of the study was to measure productivity of extraction, operation cost, joint bussines income, investament and income of Koperasi Desa.The observation area was located at PT Tanjung Raya Intiga (PT TRI), Barito Hulu Puruk Cahu Forest District, of Central Kalimantan Province in 2001.The results showed that logging production achieved was 892,9 m3, log extraction productivity 99 m3. hm/hour, operation cost Rp 14,227/m3, logs selling revenue Rp 31,235,950,-, investment cost Rp 2,901,017.- and cooperative income Rp 28,901,017.-.The financial income was distributed to local community (34%), wages for cooperative bussines managers (29%), village contribution (4,5%), administration fee for cooperative (5%) and government officers (27%).The local people and the forest concessioners could share the benefit of cooperation in naturalproduction forest management.

Abstract

Penelitian mutu dolok, berat jenis dan kekuatan balok-lamina telah dilakukan pada kayu mangium (Acacia mangium Willd. ) berumur 10 tahun, dan kayu sungkai ( Peronema canescens Jack.)berumur 15 tahun dari hutan tanaman di Serang, Jawa Barat.Diameter dolok ( panjang 250 cm ) bagian pangkal batang (= A), bagian tengah (=B) dan bagian atas (= C) berturut-turut, rata-rata 24 cm, 20 cm. dan 18 cm untuk kayu mangium. Sedangkan kayu sungkai 17 cm,13 cm dan 10 cm. Kebundaran dolok dari dua jenis kayu ini tergolong hampir bundar ; kesilindrisan dolok A kayu mangium: dan dolok kayu sungkai, tergolong hampir silindris, sedangkan dolok B dan C kayu mangium tergolong silindris,Berat jenis kayu basah, rata-rata = O,893 ( = berat kayu basah 893 kg/m3) untuk kayu mangium ; kayu sungkai = 0,844 ( = berat kayu basah 844 kg/m3 ). Berat jenis kayu kering udara rata-rata = 0,47 ( kadar air 11%) untuk kayu mangium; dan 0,51 (kadar air 12,5 %) untuk kayu sungkai.Terdapat hubungan linier positif yang sangat nyata antara berat jenis kering udara dengan posisi/jarak dari empulur ko arah luar/kulit ; yakni lebih rendah pada jarak sepertiga jari-jari dari empulur, kemudian meningkat pada duapertiganya, dan paling tinggi pada bagian kayu paling luar. Kekuatan dua jenis kayu tersebut tergolong kelas kuat Ill - II.Modulus elastisitas rata-rata balok-lamina (3 lapis, perekat PF). pada uji lentur dengan pembebanan titik tengah (centre point loading)I 05.891 (x I 03 kg/cm2) untuk kayu mangium ; dan 79,862 (x IO3 kg/cm2) untuk kayu sungkai.Uji lentur dengan pembebanan pada dua titik beban (two point loading) balok-lamina tersebut, modulus elastisitas (=E) dan lentur patah (MOR F ). masing-masing rata-ratanya =126,470 (x103 kg/cm2) dau 578,59 kg cm2.untuk kayu mangium ; 97,051 (x103 kg cm2) dan 5 I 0,35 kg/cm2. pada kavu sungkai. mutu kekuatan tersebut, menurut standar JAS torgolong "strength grade" E I 20 - F 330 untuk kayu mangium, dan E 95 - F 285 untuk kayu sungkai. . Kekuatan geser balok-lamina tersebut, rata-rata 59,28 kg/cm2untuk kayu sungkai .tergolong kelompok jenis (wood species group) 6 sedangkan kayu mangium 24,35 kg/cm2. tergolong di bawah kelompok jenis 6.Kekuatan tekan sejajar arah serat kayu mangium , rata-rata = 379.13 kg/cm2 . tergolong dalam kelas kuat II. Delaminasi balok-lamina dari kayu sungkai memenuhi standar JAS, sedangkan kayu mangium belum memenuhi standar ini.

Abstract

A preliminai y survey on wood fossil  was carried out at three fossil yards around Ciampea, Leuwiliang and  Jasinga,  West  Java.  The purpose  of the survey was to find  out the diversity of ancient trees of the respective areas.  Fossils examined were limited to those having diameter 30 cm up only.   Identification was made by examining anatomical features  which can be detected by the aid of a 10 x illuminated magnifier.  The results are as follows  : 81. 4 percent  out of 199 fossils  examined  are  belongs  to  Dipterocarpaceae;  among  those  dipterocarp fossils,   19.4 percent  are Dryobalanoxylon,   a  genus  which no longer has  extant living in the present  day natural forest of Java; non dipterocarp fossils  are less than those of dipterocarp;  among them are Alstonioxylon,   Calophylloxylon,   Dillenioxylon,   Ochanostachysoxylon, Tenninalioxylon,  and some fossil  of Leguminosae.   These  results  indicate  that some  time in the past,  during  some already gone epoch, the diversity of  trees  in  the west region of Java island was similar to the diversity of  trees  in Sumatera  and Kalimantan islands nowadays  where dipterocarp trees are relatively  abundant.   Further  study  on  the precisely  described  origin  and  accurately  dated  fossils  is highly recommended.Key words :    Dipterocarpaceae,   wood fossil, Java
