Abstract

Pada studi ini dikaji pengeluaran kayu balak pada medan sulit dengan sistem kabel layang menggunakan mesin kecil yarder prototipe alat Expo generasi-II yang bertenaga 5,5 PK. Kayu balak ditarik dari petak tebang ke pinggir jalan angkutan yang berada di atas lereng pada jarak sejauh 50 m. Produktivitas yarder baru tercapai rata-rata 0,6363 m3/jam berarti masih di bawah target kisaran 2,5 -5 m3/jam. Biaya investasi Rp 72.000.000 atau sebesar Rp 102.986/jam atau Rp 156.351/m3. Analisis finansial menggunakan data aktual kinerja alat dan pada harga sewa alat sama dengan biaya pengeluaran kayu diperoleh nilai NPV dan IRR negatif. NPV dan IRR positif saat harga sewa lebih besar yaitu Rp 185.000/m3.

Abstract

Three  Wood species,  i.e.  tusam  (Pinus  merkusii  Junh.  et De Vr.), karet  (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg.) and jeungjing paraserianthes falcataria (L.)  Nielsen)   were  treated  with  two  bor preservatives  using cold soaking   method.  The  two preservatives  used  were  borax at  5  %  level  and  the  mixture  of  borax  and  boric acid  at  10  %  level.   The soaking periods  were  1,  3,  5 and 7 days. Forty  samples  of  the  size 5  x 5  x 50  cm  were  used for  each species  and  each treatment  in  thisn experiment.   The avemge moisture  content of the samples for each species  were 29 .9 %, 31. 9%  and 30.3% respectively.The results  showed   that  two species,  i.e. tusam  and karet  achieved  the  minimum standard on preservative  retention and pentatiue.   The  required  minimum retention for  borex  preservative  is 8. 7 kg/m3, whereas  for  the mixture of borax  and boric acid is 8.4 kg/m3.  The required  minimum penetration for both preservatives is 10 mm.The .study  recommended   that  tusam  should be treated in 5 days  using borax preservative  or  1  day  using the  mixture of   borax  and  boric,  both  with  cold  soaking  method.  The  treatment for  karet  was  recommended   to use the  mixture of borax  and  boric  acid  within 3 days.

Abstract

Uji asal sumber bibit nilam di Pasaman Barat, Sumatera Barat perlu dilakukan sebagai salah satu tahapan untuk meningkatkan produktivitas hasil panen dan minyak nilam. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menguji tiga asal sumber bibit nilam di Pasaman Barat, Sumatera Barat. Rancangan acak kelompok dilakukan pada penelitian dengan menguji tiga asal sumber bibit nilam sebagai perlakuan yaitu bibit nilam asal Tapak Tuan, asal Dairi dan Sidikalang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pertumbuhan, potensi produksi terna kering, potensi produksi minyak nilam dan kulitas minyak terbaik ditunjukkan oleh nilam asal sumber bibit asal Dairi. Pemanenan pada umur sebelas bulan setelah tanam, nilam asal bibit Dairi menghasilkan potensi produksi terna kering 19,4 ton/ha, potensi produksi minyak 208 kg /ha dan kandungan patchouli alkohol 44,57%.

Abstract

Studi dekomposisi daun dan ranting mangium (Acacia mangium) dari limbah tebangan, menggunakan tiga isolat fungi pelapuk yaitu Schizophyllum commune HHBI-204, Marasmius sp. HHBI-346 dan Pycnoporus sp. HHBI-348, dan diinkubasikan selama 30 hari di tempat terbuka, di Bogor. Tingkat dekomposisi contoh uji dievaluasi berdasarkan perubahan kandungan karbon organik, nitrogen total, kadar unsur hara, dan kapasitas tukar kation (KTK). Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa inokulasi fungi berpengaruh terhadap kandungan kimia daun dan ranting mangium. Nisbah C/N contoh uji berkisar antara 33,1-36,4. Kandungan unsur hara makro tersebut yaitu N 0,75 - 0,86%, P 0,26 - 0,35%, K 0,21 - 0,25%. Sedangkan nilai KTK berkisar antara 21,46 - 26,12 me/100g. Pada umur inkubasi 30 hari, peran fungi pelapuk sebagai aktivator dekomposisi daun dan ranting mangium belum cukup nampak.

Abstract

A study on volume and classification of logging waste has been carried out in several forest companies in Aceh, North Sumatra, and East Kalimantan.  Average wood waste volume at the logged over areas having diameter range from  10 to 39  cm with one meter in length or more were measured using the Brereton method.The results of this investigation reveal that:I. Logging waste volume in Aceh range from 26,46  to 29,08  m3/ha  with an average of 27,85  m3/ha.  In North Sumatra the value ranges from 22,94  to 38,66  m3/ha  with an average of 28,90  m3/ha.  It  was formed  that in East Kalimantan  the logging waste ranges from22,00  to 81,94 m3/ha with an average of 52,38 m3/ha.2. The average wood waste at felling site was higher in the forest companies in East Kalimantan.3. Logging waste consists predominantly of those classified as 10 to 39 cm in diameter with 4 m length or more.4. The average volume of logging waste classifiedas 10 to 19 cm in diameter with 4 m length of more in Aceh, North Sumatra and East Kalimantan are consecutively 17,5 m3/ha,16,9 m3/ha and 24,9 m3/ha.

Abstract

Investigation about the cold-soaking treatment has been conducted on five wood species (i.e. keruing, nyatoh, melur, pulai and meranti merah) for housing purposes. The penetrating preservative for this case was CCB (copper-chrome-boron) chemicals. Before being treated. the wood specimens measuring 3 - 5 cm (in length) by 3 - 5 cm (in width) were prepared from each of the five species. Such specimens could not be treated by implementing the conventionally prescribed treating schedule. because the measurement of preservative retention at such schedule should follow the revised standard/schedule which differed from the conventional one. Hence, in cold-soaking treatment using CCB preservative, the specimens of wood species for such purpose had to be modified in their sizes/shapes.Three different sizes/shapes were prepared, i.e. beam, truss, and rafters; and then were allowed to reach their air-dry moisture contents. Afterwards. they underwent cold-soaking treatment using CCB preservative in two different concentrations (i.e. 5 percent and 10 percent). Meanwhile. the soaking durations implemented for each concentration were consecutively 3,5 and 7 days.The results revealed that all the wood species in all three sizes/shapes (i.e. beam. truss. and rafters)could be treated using the revised schedule. Except for meranti in truss and rafter. Related as such. the revised treating schedule for these five species has been appropriately devised.

Abstract

This experiment is intended to improve the quality of the several types of benzoin by using an aceton solvent. The benzoin consisted of four samples with decreasing order of  quality: "mata kasar",   "mata halus", "jurur" and "abu". All of  these  samples  were obtained from Tarutung North Sumatera. A general linear models procedure in the SAS computer package was employed to analyze the effect of the acetone solvent extraction and benzoin quality on physico chemical properties of benzoin.Results showed that the acetone solvent extraction. type of benzoin and the interaction of both gave a highly significant effect on moisture contens. Softening points, number of saponifications, solubility in ethanol. ash contents.  benzoin acid, calculated as cinnamic acids; except the effect of interaction  on softening  points. Furthermore,  the LSD analysis between means indicated that there were significant  differences  on physico  - chemical properties  among the type of benzoin, exclude the means value of solubility in alcohol between "mata kasar" and "mata halus".  and between "jurur" and "abu". There was also no significant difference on an ash content means value between "mata kasar" and "mata halus".  This aceton solvent extraction increased tire quality of "mata kasar" and "mata halus" benzoin to meet the first and tire second quality requirement of the Indonesian National Standard.  respectively. However,  the softening point of jurur benzoin did not meet second quality requirement of this standard. Overall,  the aceton solvent extraction can improve the quality of benzoin as indicated by an increase  in benzoin value, calculated as cinnamic acids, and a decrease in dirt content value.

Abstract

Measuring the volume of logs which have been rafted on the rivers is very difficult. The difficulty is mostly in measuring the average top and bottom diameters of logs because the largest portion of logs are inside the water.In this paper, the results of measurements carried out both on the ground and in the river are described. Lately, log measurement in the river is necessary because:a. Volume of logs sent to industries would be measured in the river.b. Many logs of the illegal cutting found are rafted in the river.The observation reveals that :1. Volumes of logs measured on the ground and in the river are significantly different.2. From the sample of 60 logs of Dryobalanops spp. it is found that the total volume measured on the ground is 273,18 m3, while the total volume measured in the river is 262, 76 m3. The total difference is 10,42 m3 or 0,04 m3 per_m3 in average.3. the correction factor (FK) then is 0,04 m3 per m3 or 3,81 %. It means that the volume of log measured in the river is smaller than the volume Measured on the ground. Therefore, the volume measured in the river should be multiplied with the correction factor of 1.04 to obtain the real volume as measured on the ground.

Abstract

The  wood  waste  in plywood  manufacturing can  be used as fuel  in the boiler so it is worth  while  to know  how  much waste  is produced.  The data  obtained  can  be used as input  to determine   the amount  of fuel   to be purchased  from  outside source.In  plywood  making most waste  is produced at peeling  process, i.e. at rotary cutter,  it could  make  up  to 80  % of the  total  waste produced.This  study showed   that  the  waste  of  individual log  is significantly affected by log diameter and  log quality,  the relationship  is given  by regression  model.

Abstract

The result of  a study on briqueting charcoal from activated charcoal residue,  prepared  by using the hydraulic  press process is presented  in this paper. The residue :  was subjected to two different treatments, namely unwashed  and  washed with  water.  Following   the  treatment, each residue  material  was mixed  with  starch adhesive, using four different concentrations:  0 percent, 1 percent, 2 percent  and 3 percent,  consecutively.The  respons  evaluated from the  briquetted charcoal are the  moisture content, ash content, volatile matter, fixed carbon, density, crushing strength and calorific value. The result shows  that  moisture  content ranges from  3,36 - 5,56 percent, ash content  from  8,06  - 12,78 percent, volatile matter from  23,56 - 41,28 percent, fixed carbon from  45,9 - 68,38  percent, density from 0,6471-0,7985 gr/cm, crushing strength from 0,79 - 6,33 kg/cm and  the  calorific values ranged from 5243,25  -  6378,84  cal/gr.
