Abstract

Pragmatics as the waste basket of linguistics –because this field of language study becomes the receiver of any unsolved linguistics problems– needs to accommodate the broadest understanding of the contexts themselves. Not only that it must include the so-called textual context and any extralinguistics ones such as the spatio-temporal settings, but it also includes ones that relate to social and cultural aspects. Comprehensive, wise, and through considerations on any situational aspects of the utterances, in addition to social and cultural aspects, might also determine the right interpretation of meanings of the language. All aspects of contexts that might be utilized and implemented comprehensively to interprete meanings of any unsolved linguistics items might be called in this way, the pragmatics context. The last mentioned is the main concern of the discussion of this article and definitely such context needs to be reinterpreted. Keywords: pragmatics, waste basket, pragmatic contexts, reinterpretation

Abstract

This article discusses hermeneutics theory developed by Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900— 2002). Gadamer’s hermeneutics critically examines aesthetic crisis and historical understanding theory from a Heideggerian perspective. Hermeneutics is a classical discipline relating to textual understanding. Through Gadamer’s hermeneutic theory, interpreter understand the presented texts by relating them to their historical contexts. This way of understanding leads to a notion that interpreting texts not only means as reproducing meaning, but also as producing meaning beyon the texts.. In the text there is context. Therefore, interpreter should understand the historical horizon of textual and contextual understandings in order to establish its whole meaning. Keywords: hermeneutics, historicity, horizon, meaning

Abstract

There are few postcolonial novels which narrate identity negotiation between Indonesians and Dutch people comprehensively since Pramoedya Ananta Toer wrote his phenomenal postcolonial novels quartet Buru. However, some contemporary Indonesian short stories highlight identity negotiation particularly in the era during which a lot of Indonesian students and immigrants live in the Netherlands, the former colonizer of Indonesia. This translocation indicates the deconstruction of the centre by the former colonized people from the place called periphery (colony). The movement of the former colonized Indonesian people to Netherlands, as a consequence, brings about identity negotiation in the metropolitan centre and creates what is called by Homi Bhabha in-between space. The identity of the Indonesian characters in those contemporary Indonesian literary works is constructed by the Dutch. Conversely, the identity of the Dutch is also stereotyped by the Indonesians. The relations between the Indonesians and Dutch people in the past, during the colonial period, to some extent engulfs that construction. Keywords: identity, postcolonial studies, the Self, the Other

This article discusses interculturalism in an adapted drama text. The text under consideration here is Jembangan yang Pecah, adapted by Suyatna Anirun from Der Zerbrochene Krug by Heinrich von Kleist. Translation is a kind of transformation process. In the process there is an effort to adapt the text with the held performance. The process from original text to translation text is one of the concerns of interculturalism idea. An Idea constitutes a development of multiculturalism adaptation. During the performance, the audience will arrive at their interpretation in a brief moment whereas adapting a text from a different language and culture demands special efforts in the process of interpretation. The successful performance of adapted texts has also indicated that adapted texts are easier to perform because they -in comparison to Indonesian original texts- show more conformity to the required dramatic structures. Keywords: interculturalism, adaptation, transformation

Abstract

Sutasoma novel composed by Cok Sawitri is based on Sutasoma Kakawin written by Mpu Tantular. Both writings, novel and kakawin (poem), form a different literature genre. The genre transformation from kakawin to novel indicates that Tantular’s Sutasoma finds its transformation in Sawitri’s Sutasoma. Based on this, this article aims at elaborating the transformed elements in the two writings and discussing whether the transformation also has changed the textual stuctures (story), messages, functions. Structural analysis to the texts shows that the transformation has happened to the protagonist, Jayantaka, forming a transformation from Sutasoma and conversely, Sutasoma forms a transformation from Jayantaka. Novel seems to have voiced freedom in choosing faith, whereas kakawin voices the only one best religion. The transformation, however, keep their textual structure and functions unchanged, i.e. life history and serving as a legitimacy for Budhism as the best religion, which during the Majapahit era had been seen as the second and inferior. Keywords: Sutasoma, kakawin, transformation, novel, structure

Abstract

The Chinese was considered the foreign people in Besuki Residency, despite of they hadsettled in Java northeast coast, even some had become administrators in the private land ofthe area. This article identifies and describes why they were able to be the administratorsin the area from the end of 18th to the beginning of 19th century. The problems to discuss are the relationship between Chinese administrators and the indigenous government and their relationship to the people. This study shows that there were differences and similaritiesbetween Chinese contract handlers (Chinese landlords) and Chinese as administrators. They were differentiated by the way of earning wide land and the way of getting power. The landlords had the right to manage wide land by renting or buying from the colonialgovernment. Meanwhile, Chinese administrators were promoted as the head of area becausetheir merit for colonial government. However, in managing the rented district both of them had similiar tendency; governing by feudal manner from which they considered themselvesthe owners of the land.
