Abstract

The Indonesian nationalism has emerged through a long process of colonialism opression. In the course of history, it experienced a significant change. The dynasty politics, novel and newspaper, and religion became major sources of the handing down of nationalist values that rooted in the past. They provide inspirations for men of letters, poets, drama and art workers to immortilize various historical events in Indonesia. Recent development demonstrates a phenomenon of the truncated, superficial, and local nationalism. Solidarity for the victims of natural disasters, the oppressed people, football fans club solidarity, and solidarity for Ambalat, Simpadan, Palestine, Afghanistan, have proved the trend. Poetical experiences as an aesthetical appreciation tend to reject repetition. Therefore, the same spirit tends not to be brought to face similar phenomena because of boredom and saturation. Keywords: consumer culture, nationalism, repetition rejection, poetic, superficial

Abstract

Novel Poetics Surat Panjang tentang Jarak Kita yang Jutaan Tahun Cahaya (2013) by Dewi Kharisma Michellia is composed with an autobiographical technique to counter Katrin Bandel’s view on sexuality identity for young writer. This work may be seen from a different perspective of discussing woman, a self narrating style, gender, feminism, deconstruction, or even brought further to phenomenology practice. The discussion shows that the self character is able to merge into a non-self discourse and identity into non-identity and thus, becomes anonimousKeywords: identity, Surat Panjang novel, self character

Abstract

The invention and application of the media forms using satellite communications, such as telephone and television, as well as the technological transportation advances result in the fading of physical, spatial boundaries because information on all events occuring in any part of the world becomes easily accessible to many people in different places almost in no time. Mass media such as television, can be interpreted simply as one of the instruments which reinforces human efforts in realizing the above obsession. The optimization and promotion of indigenous arts and culture of the Jember regency in the form of documentation and the making of the album as one of the shows on television programmes can serve as representation and image creation of the area and its complicated culture. Through this study, it is expected to create a better communication between communities and cultures in the regency of Jember that can be utilized to help the local government in formulating policies to explore and to develop its potential resources. Keywords: promotion , arts, local wisdoms, Jember regency, local television

Abstract

The Chinese migration to Surabaya can be traced back to the 14th Century. Among the push factors that forced the Chinese to migrate to Surabaya, poor conditions of living in their home country caused by natural disasters, warfares, and inhospitable environment were notable. In addition, the Chinese migrants in the 19th century were attracted by employment opportunities in colonial mines and plantations. Initially, there were no problems occuring between the Chinese and the indigenous peoples in Surabaya. The Chinese interacted with the indigenous people through marriage, religion, cultural performances, language, and food. However, their relations began to break down with the strengthening of the Dutch colonial rule in Indonesia. In the 19th Century, the colonial government began to introduce a number of regulations that effectively segregated the Chinese from the rest of population, namely the “wijkenstelsel”, an ethnic-based identification system (passenstelsel) and the establishment of Chinese schools. The postcolonial policies further disrupted the relations between the Chinese and the indigenous people. The policies included the Ekonomi Benteng, PP 10/59 which prohibited the Chinese and others identified as foreigners from engaging in village retail trade. Several additional policies established by the East Java Pepelrada (Regional Military Authority to Implement Dwikora) also discriminated against the Chinese in Surabaya. Keywords: assimilation, the Chinese, the indigenous people, Surabaya

This article is a brief analysis of a novel entitled Mumi Beraroma Minyak Wangi composed by Naning Pranoto (2001). The subject matter to be dealt with here is focused on social space mobility experienced by the major female character in the story taking the 1965–1997 Indonesia as its background. The basic asumption is that in any social space mobility that occurs, the major female character of the story change her identity as part of the efforts to secure her existence in any environment where she is present. The change in identity forms an expression of concept of identity fluidity, in which one’s identity does not continuously exist in a similar situation.
