Abstract

A series of controversies have been a striking phenomenon colouring the existence of tobacco and smoking habit. Drawing upon the available and reachable source materials, mainly secondary ones, the present paper seeks to trace broadly the historical roots of opposition to tobacco and smoking and the recent development of the pro and cons concerning the two issues. A special attention is going to be paid to the arguments built by the conflicting to support their own positions. It is argued that the debates on tobacco and smoking have long taken place, parallel with their spreads from the Americas to the European Continent and the other parts of the world. The debates have been increasingly fierce, in which many parties are getting involved. The present pros and cons conflict might be simplified to certain extent into a battle of “profit versus health”, which is radically different from the earlier battle in which health considerations were initially an integral part of the explanation for tobacco and smoking expansion. In the past the moralistic arguments played a major role in the opposition against tobacco and smoking. Recently the position has been replaced by health issues, serving as the core arguments in the antismoking and tobacco movements emerging over the last couple of decades. Keywords: controversy, tobacco, smoking habit, past time, contemporary period

Abstract

The article focuses issue of cyberspace with question “how subjects reproduce their presence in technological space?” Technological space is a space that is created through information or internet tehcnology network development. Internet booming in Indonesia’s social movement historicity attached with problem of information spreading under authoritarian New Order Regime that systematically placed truth which is controlled and centered. In this point, internet is able to uncover order and naration of truth from the ruler. But internet became ironic when its presence brought consequences into mass subjectivity presence space, fluid in up to speed technology and the will of becoming in experimentation form without limits. Experimentation which referred to subject’s textuality and visuality is presented as consciousness tendency in political order and at the same time, represented cultural dimension that discursively appeared to negate in virtual partial objectivity. This condition, for writer, is part of spatiality which signify the presence of subjectivity that is formed in late capitalism order. The order is able to touch social unconsciousness space. Especially, on how kinds of presence which are placed as selfconsciousness particularity are only become kinds of language representations without refer to materiality formation movement that were represented. Abstract

Indonesia and Malaysia are two neighbouring countries that share land marine boundaries. One of the boundaries of the two countries is situated in a small island called Sebatik. The island is devided into two parts, one part is under the Indonesia’s jurisdiction and the other one is under the Malaysia’s juridiction. As a boundary island, Sebatik has a strategic role for the two countries. The friendship betwen them is very obvious because in this tiny island the citizens of the wo counties can visit each other without being bothered by complicated administrative issues and procedures. However, it is quite frequent that tensions between the two countries arise in the island where military personnels are present to guard the borders. Apart from the oftenemerging tensions between the two countries due to the political dynamics Sebatik island has played a role as a small door to build peaceful relation between Malaysia and Indonesia, as demonstrated by daily contacts among the local people. Abstract

The philosophy of science in the Javanese philosophy is limited in number. Therefore, Pramoedya criticizes the lack of contribution of the Javanese culture and people to modern science. Bumi Manusia and Anak Semua Bangsa form an autocriticism to the Javanese philosophy that should become a guide to thought and action. Both novels invite the readers to criticize the Javanese philosophy, its strenghts and weaknesses. The study to the novels reveals that the Javanese philosophy is a philosophy of values, especially ethics. This issue is deeply and broadly elaborated in terms of its truth and effectivity in conncetion with the Indonesian nation’s progress in particular and the world in general. Keywords: autocritics, culture, philosophy, values, and science
