Abstract

This study aims to find out the reasons and experiences of 7th semester students in using ELSA Speak application as an English learning media. This research uses descriptive qualitative method involving 30 students of English Education Department Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta who have used ELSA Speak application consisting of 10 males and 20 females. Data was collected through an open questionnaire filled out by 30 students through Google Form and in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 students randomly using the spinner application, then the data was analyzed qualitatively thematically. The results found four reasons for students to use ELSA Speak, namely to improve students’ English speaking, to improve English pronunciation, recommended by lecturers, can be used flexibly. Meanwhile, there are five experiences felt by students, namely interactive and non-boring exercises, increasing students’ confidence in speaking English, knowing students’ progress directly, getting feedback, practicing speaking directly based on the AI roleplay feature.

Abstract

Penulisan surat dinas perlu menggunakan bahasa yang efektif agar pesan yang disampaikan tidak menimbulkan ambiguitas. Salah satu aspek yang perlu diperhatikan adalah asas berhemat, yaitu menghindari penggunaan kata atau frasa yang berlebihan sehingga kalimat tetap ringkas dan padat makna. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk ketidakefisienan pada surat dinas Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa Universitas PGRI Adi Buana Surabaya. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Data dari penelitian ini berupa bentuk ketidakefisienan. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah surat dinas Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teknik dokumentasi dan teknik catat. Prosedur pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini adalah (1) Mengumpulkan surat dinas, (2) Mengamati data, (3) Mengklasifikasi data, (4) Mencatat data, dan (5) Menyimpan data yang diperoleh. Prosedur analisis data dalam penelitian ini adalah (1) Mengumpulkan dan mengamati data, (2) Mengklasifikasi, (3) Mengode, (4) Menginterpretasi, dan (5) Menyimpulkan. Hasil penelitian ini adalah ditemukannya kesalahan-kesalahan yang tidak sesuai dengan asas berhemat. Kesalahan yang paling banyak ditemukan adalah penggunaan kata atau frasa yang sama secara berulang-ulang dalam satu kalimat. Simpulan dari penelitian ini, yaitu data dan hasil analisis, menunjukkan bahwa surat dinas UKM yang diteliti mengandung bentuk berhemat yang tidak terlaksana dengan baik. Kesalahan berhemat melibatkan penggunaan kata-kata yang berulang-ulang namun memiliki makna yang sama, sehingga perlu dihilangkan atau dimoderasi untuk meningkatkan efektivitas pesan. Abstract

This paper reports on the implementation of an Extensive Reading (ER) program using Literacy Cloud for mobile English learning, and the perception of the student participants. For roughly four weeks, 45 EFL students enrolled in third grade from two major courses, namely a pharmacy and dental assistant course at a vocational high school in East Java, Indonesia, joined this program to experience extensive reading through Literacy Cloud for mobile English learning. They had no experience to use Literacy Cloud before, so literacy cloud is introduced to support ER program. Data was gathered with a questionnaire and interviews were given to ascertain student experience using Literacy Cloud in ER class. The results show that students had positive attitudes and perceptions about Literacy Cloud and felt that Literacy Cloud was very useful for supporting the development of their English skills, especially their reading skill. The results of this study have implications for English language teaching, for deploying ER with vocational school students. The integration of technology such as Literacy Cloud can provide many benefits for the students’ reading skill development.

Abstract

Current educational trends emphasize the increasing focus on teachers' strategies for questioning to enhance student engagement in the classroom. Despite the growing recognition of these practices as effective techniques for active learning, there is a lack of research investigating how teachers' questioning strategies affect how students engage. This study aimed to investigate how the questioning strategies influence students' engagement during classroom interaction. The research employed a qualitative case study analyzing the teacher’s questioning strategies and students' engagement during the classroom instructional process and the teacher’s interview. The participants were an English teacher and a vocational high school class in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. The study revealed that the teacher used five types of teacher’s questioning strategies proposed by Chen (2016): wait time, probing, repetition, paraphrasing, and simplifying. Among the most frequently used were wait times and probing types of strategies. In addition, the strategies in question affect the students' engagement; for example, waiting time encourages behavioral and cognitive engagement, probing increases cognitive engagement, and simplistic and repetitive language use increases affective and behavioral engagement. These results emphasized the need for teacher questioning to engage students in classroom activities. Therefore, by understanding how the teacher’s questioning affects the students' engagement, the teacher could improve their questioning strategies skills to engage students and encourage active participation in classroom interaction.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the forms of assertive speech acts in the practice of negotiation text learning among students and to describe the implications of assertive speech acts in the negotiation text learning process for the analytical thinking skills of Grade X students. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, chosen for its relevance in providing an in-depth depiction of the assertive speech acts that emerge during the learning of negotiation texts and in examining their implications for students' analytical thinking abilities. The data source in this study consists of verbal utterances produced by students during the negotiation text learning process with the theme of healthy food in class X-12 at Senior High School of 7 Kediri. Data collection was conducted using documentation and observation-note-taking techniques. The findings of this study reveal 31 forms of assertive speech acts in the negotiation text learning practice themed around healthy food among class X-12 students at SMAN 7 Kediri, namely: a) informing (9), b) pointing out (7), c) suggesting (5), and d) delivering (11). The focus of this research is on five student groups from class X-12 at Senior High School of 7 Kediri who carried out negotiation text practices at the front and back school canteens.

Abstract

This research examines the utilization of the Duolingo application for self-directed learning of English vocabulary at MTS Muhammadiyah 1 Samarinda. English as an International Language and the utilization of digital platforms as learning media is very effective and fun. Duolingo was identified as an effective and popular platform for language learning, which utilizes a gamification approach and enables self-directed learning. This study used a descriptive method with a qualitative approach, involving 10 grade 9 students of MTS Muhammadiyah 1 Samarinda who were selected through purposive sampling based on their experience using Duolingo. Data collection was conducted through direct interviews with 7 questions. The results showed that Duolingo makes it easier for users to learn English vocabulary, with feedback and repetition features that reinforce understanding. In addition, ease of use makes Duolingo accessible and usable by people of all ages. Factors such as attractive appearance, flexibility, clear explanation of material, repetition of material, gamification approach, and various language options make this application attractive to users.

Abstract

One of the interesting literary studies is the study of literary texts in terms of their aesthetic media. The interdisciplinary relationship between literature and language is studied in stylistics. Diction and metaphor are widely discussed in poetry studies. There are not many studies of diction and metaphor that are specifically oriented to the study of poetry that is classified as nature tourism literature. The research method used is literary research that is carried out qualitatively and applies hermeneutics as a method in interpreting texts descriptively. The research data in the form of selected poetry texts based on metaphorical diction, data sources in the form of a textbook of a collection of poetry and short stories entitled Pulanglah ke Rumah, data collection based on observation and interview techniques, data analysis using interactional data analysis techniques and interpreted hermeneutically. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the diction used in the poem Pulanglah ke Rumah contains a lot of metaphorical diction. This proves that the author in creating a work considers the aspect of beauty presented in a fiction based on the surrounding conditions. In addition, this study illustrates the author's competence in producing tourism literature.
