Abstract

Abstract

Brown planthopper is still a major problem in rice. Control using botanical insecticides is considered less effective, since its persistence in rice plantation is short. Research on the persistence of botanical insecticide residues of pyrethrum and neem in rice has been conducted in green house of Entomology, Indonesian Spices and Medicinal Crops Research Institute, Bogor from January to December 2016. The research was aimed to determine the persistence of botanical insecticide residue on rice by testing it to brown planthopper mortality. The study was arranged in complete randomized design with six treatments and four replications. The treatment consisted of two pyrethrum formulas (EC); two neem formulas (EC); positive controls of synthetic insecticides (a.i. carbosulfan) and negative control (water). The method used was Leaf Residue Method, by spraying the formula into one month-old rice plants, then 10 brown planthopper nymphs of forth instar were introduced into each plant in the first, second, third and fourth day after spraying.  The planthopper mortality was observed in the first, third, sixth, 24th and 48th hours after introduction. The residuals of all insecticides tested were still affecting the  mortality of brown planthopper until the fourth day after spraying, although the effectiveness decreased by the time. The average mortality on the first day introduction after spraying ranged between 53-73 % and in the fourth day after spraying was 18-25 %.

Abstract

Endophytic bacteria have many benefits such as phosphate solubilization, nitrogen  fixation, increasing mineral absorption as well as enhancing plant resistance against diseases. The research aimed to obtain endophytic bacteria potential to stimulate the growth of black pepper seedling. The first step was isolating endophytic bacteria from roots, rhizomes, and leaves of healthy red ginger. Characterization and selection were conducted by evaluating the capability on phosphate solubilization, nitrogen fixation, and indole acetic acid (IAA) hormone production of the isolated endophytic bacteria. There were 36 isolates consisted of 14 isolates from leaves, 9 isolates from roots and 13 isolates from rhizomes. Seventeen isolates were capable to dissolve phosphate, fix nitrogen and produce IAA or possessing those three characters, but only nine isolates were tested on pepper seedlings. The nine isolates were Ajc 1, Ajc 3, Ajc 7, Ajc 9, Rjc 1, Rjc 6, Djc 3, Djc 6, and Djc 11. Further evaluation of the nine isolates which were inoculated to pepper seedlings, indicated that Rjc1 isolate enhanced pepper seedlings height better than other isolates.

Abstract

The quality and quantity of nutmeg fruit, seed and mace can be improved through managing fruit and seed production.  Fruit development was affected by climate, flower initiation and pollination process. This study aimed to determine the correlation between climate, position, distance of pollen donor to female nutmeg trees, and the ratio of female and male trees to nutmeg yield.  The study was conducted at the nutmeg germplasm collection garden at Cicurug (550 m asl), Sukabumi, tested 295 nutmeg trees from 27 locations in Indonesia. Data production of female trees was based on 2005-2017 data. All nutmeg trees were mapped using the GPS Garmin 76c5x.  Tree sex was determined by male or female flowers domination in each tree. Correlation of the climate factors and production was analyzed using Pearson Correlation. The distance, position and the proportion of female to male trees were evalated by t-test at 5% level.  Ratio of female and male trees to produce high yield was 4 : 1. Rainfall (280-430 mm/month) and temperature (24 - 25o C)   during  the  pollination  period  (8-7  months  before  harvesting)  were positively correlated with production by 57.9 % and 82.3 %. The position and distance of pollen donors to female trees had no effect on production.  However, the distance between pollen donors and female trees above 15 m produced an average production equal to 15 m. The number of trees around tree samples had no effect on nutmeg production, but light intensity at 61,425-88,480 lux absorbed by trees could enhance the yield.  Nutmeg required sunlight to penetrate plant canopy in order to induce fruit production.

Abstract

The decreased air quality due to severe pollution causes the formation of free radicals in the body. Antioxidants counteract free radicals compounds and are beneficial to health. Calophyllum plants is one of the natural antioxidants source. The study was aimed to determine the best antioxidant activity of ethanolic extracts of stem bark both single and combinations of three species of Calophyllum. The study was conducted from September to December 2017 at the Natural Product Chemistry Laboratory, Research Center for Biotechnology LIPI, Cibinong, West Java. The experiment consisted of seven treatments, repeated three times.  The treatments consisted of ethanolic stem bark extracts of a) C. pulcherrimum b) C. soulattri (CS), c) C. teysmannii (CT), d) combination of C. pulcherrimum and C. soulattri (CP+CS), e) combination of C. pulcherrimum and C. teysmannii (CP+CT), f) combination of C. soulattri and C. teysmannii (CS+CT), and g) combination of C. pulcherrimum, C. soulattri and C. teysmannii (CP+CS+CT) with the ratio of mixed extract was 1 : 1 for treatments with two combinations and 1 : 1 : 1 for three combinations. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH free radical scavenging  methods.  The  total  phenolic   and   flavonoids   content   assays   were conducted base on the reaction of follin-ciocalteu and aluminum chloride reagents respectively.  The results showed that combination of Calophyllum stem bark ethanolic extracts revealed higher antioxidant activity, total phenol and flavonoid content compared to its sole extract. CP+CS+CT treatment has the lowest IC50 value at 3.12 mg.l-1 so that it has the potential as a source of natural antioxidants.

Abstract

Citronella grass (Cymbopogon nardus var genuinus L) is an essential oil-producing plant known as "Citronella Oil of Java". Oil is resulted from leaf distillation. The fertilization of N, P, K and Mg was expected to enhance herb productivity and oil yield of citronella grass. The research was conducted at Cicurug Experimental Garden, Sukabumi from August 2016 - February 2017. The objective of this research was to determine the proper dosage of NPKMg fertilizer on citronella grass in Latosol soil type. The study was arranged in a Randomized Block Design with 6 fertilization treatments and 4 replications. Fertilizer treatments were (1) without fertilizer (control), (2) NPKMg (12:12:17:2): (2) at the dosage of 141 kg.ha-1,(3) 281 kg.ha-1, (4) 421 kg.ha-1, (5) 526 kg.ha-1, and (6) Urea 150 kg.ha-1, SP-36         50 kg.ha-1 and KCl 125 kg.ha-1 (as comparison). The NPKMg fertilization on citronella grass enhanced plant growth and increased the productivity of biomass and oil yield.  The application of NPKMg fertilization (12:12:17:2) 141 kg.ha-1 produced 23 tons of herbs, increased by 30.8 % compared to NPK fertilization without Mg. The dosage of NPKMg fertilizer (12-12-17-2) at 281 kg.ha-1 indicated the best growth and the highest herb production (24 ton.ha-1), increased by 39 %, while the highest oil content (1.4 %) was shown by 421 kg.ha-1 NPKMg (12-12-17-2) treatment, although the oil yield was insignificant compared to 281 kg.ha-1. Thus, the dosage of 281 kg.ha-1 NPKMg (12:12:17:2) can be recommended for citronella  grass cultivated at Latosol soil type
