Abstract

Leaf spot is a major groundnut disease in Indonesia and worldwidewhich has the potential to cause a yield loss of up to 60%. The use of leaf spot resistant cultivars is an easy, economical, and environmentally friendly way in groundnut cultivation to maintain high yields. The objective of the research was to evaluate the yields of 16 groundnut lines which had been developed to be leaf spot resistant and high yielding. The research was conducted in 2010 – 2011 at the Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) experimental station in Cikarawang, Indonesia. A randomized complete block design with three replications was used in the experiment. The groundnut lines evaluated were crosses between “Gajah”, a cultivar which is known to be susceptible to leaf spot, and the resistant line GPNC- WS4. Four Indonesian cultivars “Gajah”, “Jerapah”, “Zebra” and “Sima” were used as control. The results showed that selected lines demonstrated better resistance to leaf spot compared to “Gajah”. Their agronomic characteristics, such as pod number, filled pod number, pod weight, and kernel weight, were not significantly different from the control cultivars. The results of this study have provided information on groundnut leaf spot resistant lines for further evaluation.

Abstract

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp) is one of the potential substitutes of soybean due to its similar nutritional content. This study aims to determine the optimum rate of N fertilizer for the production of cowpea, and to determine the effects of the interaction between N fertilizer rates and goat manure application on cowpea production. The experiment was organized in a split-plot with a complete randomized block design with three replications. The main plot was goat manure, i.e. 0 and 5 tons.ha-1; the sub-plot was nitrogen fertilizer with five rates (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200% of the recommended rate), i.e. 0, 22.5, 45, 67.5, and 90 kg N.ha-1. Application of N fertilizer reduced the 100-seed weight and slightly reduced cowpea yield and yield components. Application of goat manure increased seed dry weight per plant, number of pods per plant, dry pod weight per plant, seed dry weight per m2, productivity, 100-seed weight, and the harvest index. There was no significant interaction between goat manure and different rates of nitrogen in affecting cowpea growth.

Abstract

Pruatjan (Pimpinella pruatjan Molk.) is Indonesian endangered medicinal plant which grows endemically at mountainousarea. To broaden its planting area, an effort to develop low-altitude tolerant genotype of pruatjan had been conductedsince May 2007. Pruatjan seeds harvested from Gunung Putri experimental station (1,545 m asl) were treated with gammairradiation (0-5 krad) and germinated at Gunung Putri. Young seedlings were transplanted into small polybag (Ø 10 cm), anda month later they were moved into 10-kg medium of pot or polybag. Two months later, some of the young plants were moved to Cibadak experimental station (950 m asl) and Cicurug experimental station (550 m asl). All plants were maintained until flowered and produce seeds. The result shows that seeds from all of irradiation level treatments germinated and grew wellalthough the amount of seedlings decreased by the higher level of irradiation treatment. No phenotypic difference of plantsfrom irradiated seed compared with those from non irradiated ones (0 krad). Plants at Cibadak and Cicurug grew faster thanthose at Gunung Putri, and also flowered faster. On April 2008, seeds from 0, 1, 3 and 5 krad treated plant had germinatedat Cicurug, and those seedlings were the candidate genotypes for low-altitude tolerant of pruatjan. Keywords: induced mutation, low altitude tolerant, pruatjan, variability

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe diallel cross analysis method was developed to obtain genetic information involved in a population formed closely to Hardy-Wienberg equilibrium. The objective of this research was to study the genetic parameters on yield component of crossing on big and curly species of red pepper using Hayman approach for dialel cross-analysis method. This approach used 6 parental genotypes and 30 full-diallel cross combinations F1 hybrids. Appearance of the character was controlled by one up to two groups of positive additive genes. Each character observed has a partial dominance. Dominant genes were found much more in the parental characters of weight per plant (IPBC120), flesh thickness of fruit (IPBC2), fruit diameter (IPBC159), and fruit length (IPBC2). The broad sense heritability values on each character was high. Whereas, narrow sense heritability value for some characters were also high, except for character of weight per plant which were moderate. Keywords: additive effects, dominant effects, gene, heritability

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe recent scarcity of fuel has stimulated many efforts to remove dependence on petroleum oil by finding alternative sources of new and renewable energy. Jatropha curcas L. has been chosen as a source of biofuel that has an important role as a petroleum oil substitute, especially for producing biodiesel. Possible efforts for the development of Jatropha in Indonesia include exploration of Jatropha plants from various regions of Indonesia, introducing the plants from abroad and plant breeding. The purpose of this study was to study the genetic parameters of morpho-agronomic traits and selection of potential genotype for genetic improvement of Jatropha curcas. The experiment was conducted at the Biotech Center, BPPT from November 2011 to July 2012. The experiment was performed using a complete randomized block design with sixteen genotypes of J. curcas. Five plants were used for each genotype, with three replications. Results of this study showed that genetic diversity of the genotypes based on morpho-agronomic characters was relatively narrow, with genetic diversity coefficient ranged from 2.73% to 9.02%. The broad-sense heritability was high for all characters, ranged from 32.26% to 85.89%. None of morpho-agronomic characters observed in the 16 genotypes was directly correlated to productivity and seed oil content. Number of fruit and total seed number per bunch were the best characters for selection criteria to obtain high dry seed weight. Based on the bi-plot analysis on seed oil content and dry weight characters among the observed genotypes, LMP and CRP x PDI could be recommended as potential F1 parents to be used in constructing F2 population. Keywords: biplot analysis, broad-sense heritability, genetic diversity coefficient

Abstract

Pedigree selection is a method of selection used in segregating populations which takes the expertise of breeders in achieving the desired goal. This method is implemented on the early generations with a high degree of segregation and is generally performed on highly heritable traits. The purpose of this research was to study the performance of F3 generation segregants and to estimate the genetic parameters to be used for identification and selection of wheat segregants under optimum environmental condition. The research was carried out at the experiment field of  Research Institute for Ornamental Crops, in Cipanas from May to September 2012. Genetic material used were 58 F3 family and six check varieties, namely  Dewata, Selayar, Oasis, Rabe, Basribey, and HP 1744. The experiment used an augmented design. Results of analysis of variance showed that the family effect was significant for days to flowering, days to harvest, percentage of empty florets, number of grains per panicle, grain weight per panicle, number of seeds per plant and seed weight per plant. High heritability estimates were  found in days to flowering, days to harvest, seed filling period, percentage of empty florets, number of grains per panicle, grain weight per panicle, number of seeds per plant, and seed weight per plant. These characters are suitable for yield improvement of tropical highland wheat due to its high heritability values. The mean value of F3 generation changes subsequent to selection either based on grain weight per plant, or based on  number of productive tillers,  number of grain per panicle, and grain weight per plant. Keywords: selection criteria, segregation, tropical, yield

Abstract

ABSTRACTSelection of transgressive segregants is considered as one effective way of obtaining peanut genotypes with high yield on early segregation. The objective of the study was to estimate genetic parameters and to identify transgressive segregants of peanut family in F3 generation. The experiment was conducted at Leuwikopo, Dramaga, Bogor on August-Desember 2014. The genetic materials evaluated were 218 family F3 generation from 5 biparental population (Jerapah/GWS79A1, GWS79A1/Zebra, GWS79A1/Jerapah, Zebra/GWS79A1 and Zebra/GWS18) and 4 commercial varieties as checks (Gajah, Jerapah, Sima, and Zebra). The experiment was conducted in an augmented randomized complete block design with 4 replications for the checks. The results showed that quantitative characters had continuous distribution and they were controlled by many genes with additive, dominance, complementary epistasis, or additive epistasis gene action. Total number of pod and number of pod had high heritability and moderate genetic coefficient of variation. Selection with 10% intensity showed that 22 families had large total number of pods while six families had larger total number of pods than both parents. Family U2-39 estimated was identified as a putative transgressive segregant with high total number of pod and had smaller variance within family than Sima variety. Abstract

Oil palm is a perennial oil crop that contribute the most important source of vegetable oil in the world. Oil palm breeding cycle take a long period, therefore molecular marker-assisted selection (MAS) is required to shorten the selection time. This MAS require the associated marker to desired trait, particularly for yield and the component that as a complex trait and depend on genetic background. The aim of this study was to obtain SSR marker that associated with average of bunch weight (ABW). Plant material was used in this study is Tenera population derived from Deli Dura x AVROS Pisifera. Seven SSR markers from public database were associated to ABW trait. Molecular data analysed for SSR markers profile which consisted of allelic diversity, heterozygosity level, and polymorphism information content (PIC). Association between SSR markers to ABW traits was performed with single marker analysis using one way analysis of variance. The results showed that SSR markers were able to amplify DNA with two to three number of alleles with the average of 2.3 alleles per locus. ABW trait for this population was significantly associated with mEgCIR3428 marker. This marker may be used in the selection of Deli Dura and AVROS Pisifera palm on the next selection cycle. Keywords: Average of bunch weight, AVROS Pisifera, Deli Dura, single marker analysis
