Abstract

The litter productivity is the estimated quantity of biomass leaf, twig and plant of reproduction material (flower) which fall down from tree species in different type of ecosystem community. Arboretum was covered with many types of trees among them was the meranti (Shorea spp.) tree as a producer of litter but not yet known how much productivity resulting litter. This research was conducted in the arboretum area of Riau University on December 2014 – January 2015. The purpose of this research was to determine the amount of litter productivity meranti (Shorea spp.) tree in the arboretum area of Riau University Pekanbaru. The research result showed that the litter productivity is affected by rainfall and wind velocity.The greatest litter productivity of meranti (Shorea spp.) tree occurred in the second week with rainfall 27,6 mm/day and wind velocity NE/08 m/s. The most litter productivity is on leaves organ (68 %) for the leaves have a short life cycle, twigs organ (24 %), fruits (5 %) and flowers (3 %). D tree is the tree that has the highest litter productivity for having large diameters and height tree, while the production of flower and fruit found in the largest C tree because these tree was in a productive period. Abstract

Currently, Batak Simalungun’s traditional house is the only legacy left from the history of the community of the Batak Simalungun. Almost all of the components of the traditional house are made from woods. However over time, the traditional house are started to experience damages in certain places. In this case, one of the efforts made is by knowing the type and criteria of the woods to create the traditional house through public perception. The purpose of this research is to know the type and criteriaof woods with the reason and consideration from the community to recreate Batak Simalungun’s traditional house. This research uses a Snowball Sampling Technique. The results showed that the type of the woods used is Eusideroxylon zwageri, with the criteria are The King’s favorite, big diameter, straight and strong. Some considerations from the community to recreate the Batak Simalungun’s traditional house are the genuine traditional house, have historical value, the house itself is a cultural asset, known by the communities and have been set as cultural heritage. Abstract

Eucalyptus sp. is fast growing species reproduced in industrial vegetation forest (IVF) as the raw material for the production of pulp and paper. In order to support the availability of raw material, an effort to increase the stands productivity is carried. In this case, one of the methods is by doing plant breeding with both vegetative and generative ways. The purpose of this research is to analyze the difference in the growth level and the quality of the fiber of the Eucalyptus sp. based on the generative and vegetative method in reproduction.This research using  Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) consist of two (2) treatmens and four (4) replications and ten (10) units trial. The result of the research shows that vegetative growth is better than the generative growth with the average of vegetative growth for its length is 0.55 m and the average of growth for its diameter is 0.53 cm while the average of the generative growth for its length is 0.15 m and average of the growth for its diameter is 0.13 cm. The quality of the fiber of the Eucalyptus sp. with vegetative method is longer than the generative method. Keywords: Eucalyptus sp., vegetative, generative, length of fibre

Abstract

Ecotourism is one form of tourism which is managed by conservation approaches. Ecotourism as part of the concept of tourism development has progressed. with more and more interest in these types of tours based on environmental sustainability. Then in the development of natural tourist destinations obtained reciprocal relationship of mutual benefit between humans as creatures who enjoy nature in its activities with well-preserved nature. This research was conducted in the Hutan Larangan Adat village Rumbio, District Kampar, Province of Riau. This research was carried out for 1 month in November, 2015. Hutan Larangan Adat is a high heritage of indigenous peoples in Rumbio, stored in a variety of natural resources and flora and fauna typical of this area. Geographically situated between 0 ° 56'12 "north latitude and 1 ° 28'17" north latitude, 100 ° 56'10 "east longitude to 101 ° 43'26 '' East Longitude and have an area of approximately 499.30 hectares in 2013. Based on the results of research on the identification of the tourism potential, it can be concluded that the area Hutan Larangan Adat in the village Rumbio very suitable to serve tourist sites include natural attractions like the river which is very clear, fruit trees, plants herbali, large trees are extremely rare in tropical rainforest, see and hear the chirping of various species of birds and other wildlife, as well as historical attractions such as the bulwark against Dutch colonialism.     Keywords: Ecotourism, Hutan larangan adat, Village Rumbio

Abstract

Melayu culturein Riau Provincecan be seen through of Riau traditional’s clothing, Riau traditional’s house, Riautypical’s food, Riautypical’s weapon, and traditional’s musical instrument. Generally,traditional’s musical instrumentin Riau usingwood raw material. One of them is gambus. There are many type of wood, but must be knownwhich of wood criteriais worthy for making gambus raw material musical instruments.Therefore it is necessary to did research about selecting criteria the type of wood as gambus raw material musical instrument based public perception in Pekanbaru City, Riau Province.This research aimed to identify selecting criteria the type of wood used as gambus raw material musical instrument.This research isqualitative research and data collection using survey method. Data collection techniquein this research did by retrieval of information through observation, interview and literature study. Analyze that used in this research is qualitative descriptive.Based on public perception in Pekanbaru City Riau Province, selecting criteria the type of wood that used as the main gambus raw material musical is jackfruit wood(Artocarpus heterophyllus), while the type of wood used as alternative raw material is acacia wood (Acaciamangium), mahogany wood (Swietenia macrophylla) and pulai wood (Alstonia scholaris). The wood criteria that used as raw material for making gambus is wood by diameter 35-40 cm, has no knots, and has wood straightness 80% - 100%. Abstract

The increased number of vehicles are getting bigger every year, including in Pekanbaru. One of the air pollution sources come from vehicle. The exhaust from vehicle contains harmful heavy metals, for example is the lead. Tuanku Tambusai Street (Nangka Street) is one of the crowded streets in Pekanbaru which have a quite large heavy metals that emitted into the air. Lead is harmful to human health and the environment, so shade plants needs to be planted as bio-indicators. However, not all plants have the same ability to absorb the lead. This study aims to determine the amount of lead content in shade plants on Tuanku Tambusai street, in Pekanbaru city and to know the type of shade plants and canopy strata that most absorb to the lead. This study uses a Wet Ashing Method for the destruction the sample, then it is analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The results shows that the leaf Polyalthia longifolia Bent. & Hook. F. is 1.88 µg/g higher than Pterocarpus indicus Willd. 1.57 µg/g and Swietenia macrophylla 1.16 µg/g. Lead content in the middle of the canopy strata (1.72 µg/g) is higher than the content of lead in the bottom of the canopy strata (1.52 µg/g) and the upper canopy strata (1.38 µg/g). Keywords: lead, shade plants, Polyalthia longifolia, Pterocarpus indicus, Swietenia macrophylla

Abstract

Biomass is organic material produced by photosynthetic process, either in the form of product or effluent. Plants, trees, grass, potatoes, agricultural waste, forest waste, excreta and cattle dung are examples of biomass. One of the potential biomass contained in mangrove ecosystem. Mangrove areas have important role for citizen especially in Riau Province on the mangrove palm region (Nypa fruticans Wurmb.). Riau Province is the largest region  in Indonesia covered by nypa plants. Nypa is a type of palm that grows in the area of the mangrove or sea tides. This research conducted in the Lubuk Muda Village Siak Kecil District Bengkalis and  Plant Ecophysiology Laboratory in the University of Riau in November 2014-January 2015. The aim of this study is to determine the potential of biomass nypa (Nypa fruticans Wurmb.) in Lubuk Muda Village Siak Kecil District Bengkalis. The result of this research showed biomass potential nypa in Lubuk Muda Village Siak Kecil District Bengkalis is 382,4 ton/ha or 19.120 ton when accumulated  to generality. Abstract

Samanea saman tree species that have great ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the air. Samanea samangrowthnot be separated from the problem of pests and diseases. Pests that attack Samanea samanand often result in losses that Plusia sp. Indonesia has a very diverse flora, contains quite a lot of kinds of plants which are sources of pesticides that can be used for pest control. The use ofCerbera manghasleaf extractas a botanical pesticide for controlling Plusia sp. of the Samanea saman is an alternative that can be used as an environmentally friendly pesticide.This research aimed to know the effect ofCerbera manghas leaf extract in controlling Plusia sp. and determine the exact concentration of the level of Plusia sp. mortality of the Samanea saman.This research uses a Completely Randomized Design Method, which consists of 5 treatments and 4 replicates with concentration levels of botanical pesticide. B0 = concentration Cerbera manghas leaf extract 0 g/l of water; B1 = 5 g/l of water; B2 = 10 g/l of water; B3 = 15 g/l of wate;B4 = 20 g/l of water. The results showed that the application of Cerbera manghas leaf extract at the concentration of 20 g/l of water is the best concentration in controlling Plusia sp. with results initial time of death fastest is 3.00 hours, the fastest time of turning off 50% (LT50) is 11.25 hours (11 hours 15 minutes) and total mortality amounted to 92.50%. Keywords:Samanea saman, Plusiasp., Cerbera manghas leaf, botanical pesticide

Abstract

Charcoal briquettes is one type of eco friendly fuels that can be renewed. Briquettes can be made by utilizing waste of biomass, including mahang wood sawdust waste and cacao shells. Utilization of those wastes is to determine whether the wastes can be utilized as biomass energy to reduce the negative impacts of waste from forest products. This study aims to create and determine the characteristics of briquettes from mahang wood sawdust waste and cacao shells. This research used completely randomized design method which is consisted of three treatments and three replications. The results showed that mahang wood sawdust and cacao shells can be used as raw material for the manufacture of charcoal briquettes. The average results obtained moisture content about 24, 89%-29.33%. The average calorific value 4529.68 cal/gram-5064.32 cal/gram, treatment P2 and P3 have met the criteria of SNI. The average power calculation is the fuel of 0.22 gram/minute-0.26 gram/minute Keywords: Briquettes, biomass, alternative, mahang wood sawdust, cocoa                           shells

Abstract

Diversityof tree speciescan be foundin the forest. One of diversity of tree species is Adenanthera pavonina L. Adenanthera pavonina L. used tree parts such as seed, leaves andwood. One of the seed used forcultivation. Germination of Adenanthera pavonina L. still thereobstacles which Adenanthera pavonina L. Seed has dormanty time. Skerification can be used by Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4). This research aims to find out seed immersion effect used H2SO4 and  knowing better seed immersion time of germination Adenanthera pavonina L. This research compiled in Completely Randomize Design (CRD) with3treatments and 3 replications. The treatment inthis study wasa longtimeimmersionfor 10 minutes, 20minutes and30minutes. Datawere analyzedbyanalysis of varianceusingPortableSAS.9.1.3. Subsequentlyfollowed bymultiplerange testDNMRTlevel of 5%. Research resultsobtainedisa longtimeimmersioneffect onseed germinationsaga. The length of timeit is best toseedimmersionfor 30minuteswith germinationof48.66%, germinationpercentage ofthe seeds of 32,66%andthe seedsgerminateaverageof 6.75days.
