Abstract

Peat wateris classified as low quality water because it has dark color, high organic matter content, high TDS, high turbidity and low pH. The crude tannins extract have been used for improving river water, but there is no information on the use of crude extrac ttannins from Averrhoa bilimbi leaf in improving the quality of peat water. To understand the effectiveness of crude tannin extracted from Averrhoa bilimbi leaf in improving the peat water quality, a study has been conducted from May to October 2015. There was CRD method applied, with 4 treatments, namely P0 (control, withhout tannin extract), P1(10 mlL-1), P2(20 mlL-1) and P3(30 mlL-1). In each treatment unit, 8 liters peat water was added with Alum (Al2SO4) (0.25grL-1) and lime (CaO) (0.3grL-1) and then was added with various dosages of tannin extract. The treated water was kept for 3 hours and the water quality parameters were measured. The treated water was then used to rear Cyprinus carpio. Results shown that the treated water quality was improved, there was degradation in organic matter content, turbidity and colour, while pH, DO and TDS was increase. The best treatment was obtained in P2, as the organic matter decrease, from 1,211.33 to 21,480 mg/L, the turbidity decrease, from 951.33 to 30.73 NTU and the color also decrease, from 29,000.33 to 693 PtCo. The highest survival rate of C. carpio after being reared for 4 days was also found in the P1 treated water, that was 96.66%. Based on data obtained, it can be concluded that the crude tannins extracts from A. Bilimbi leaf is effective to improve the quality of peat water. Keywords : Peat Water, tannins, Cyprinus carpio, Averrhoa bilimbi leaf

Abstract

Parit Belanda River is a branch of the Siak River and is inhabited by many typesof aquatic organisms, but the scientific information of those organisms is almostnone. To understand the types of prawns present in that area, a study has beenconducted from November 2015 to February 2016. There were 3 sampling areas,in the upstream (St I), the middle area (St II) and in the downstream (St III).Prawns sampling were conducted one /week for a month period, using a net(mesh size 0.5 cm) and scoop net (mesh size 0.5 cm). Morphometrical andmeristical data of the prawns were then analyzed descriptively. The prawnssampled were identified based on Cay et al. (2004) and Wowor and Choy (2001).Result shown that prawns sampled was few, there were only 30. The prawnsspecies present were consisted of 1 species only, Macrobrachium equidens Dana,1852 (Palaemonidae). This species characterized by slightly bent upward rostrum.Rostrum, propodus and telson of the male are longer than those of the female. Keywords : Macrobrachium equidens, prawn, Parit Belanda River

Abstract

The Solok Pulau Lake is an oxbow lake that receive water from the Tangon and Kampar Rivers. To understand the concentration of chlorophyll-a in the lake, this research was conducted from January to February 2015 in Solok Pulau Lake. Water samples were collected from three station, namely station1 (in the inlet from the Tangon River, station2 in the middle of the lake and station3 in the inlet from the Kampar River). Water quality parameters measured were transparency, temperature, dissolved oxygen, depth, pH, velocity, nitrates and phosphates concentration. Results shown the chlorophyll-a concentration ranged from 0.013- 0.016 (μg/L), transparency of 42-50 cm, temperature 28.3-28.70C, dissolved oxygen 1.56 to 2.17 mg/L, depth 1.56 to 2.17 mg/L, pH 5.5 and velocity 15-16 cm/sec. Based on chlorophyll-a concentration, it can be concluded the Solok Pulau Lake was oligotrophic.Key words :chlorophyll-a, Solok Pulau Lake, water quality, Tangon River and Kampar River.

Abstract

Periphyton is a sessile microscopic organisms that attach on certain substrate. A research aims to understand the biomass of periphyton in the SaloRiver based on its Ash Free Dry Mass (AFDM) in ceramic substrate, a study has been carried out in July-August 2015. There were 3 stations, namely Station 1 (in the upstream), Station 2 (in the midlle part of the stream) and Station 3 (in the downstream) for placing the ceramic substrate and for taking the water samples. Samplings were conducted 4 times, once/week. The periphyton samples were scrapped from the surface of ceramic substrate (10 cm x 3 cm). The number of ceramic sampled in each station were 10, 7 and 5 pieces in Station 1, Station 2 and Station 3 respectively. Results shown that periphyton biomass in the Salo River in general was around 0.449–2.834 mg/cm2. The periphyton biomass in the ceramic substrate placed in the Station 1, Station 2 and Station 3 was significantly different, there were 0.449 mg/cm2, 1.442 mg/cm2, and 2.834 mg/cm2 respectively. In general, the periphyton biomass in the downstream was higher than those of the other areas, indicated that the productivity in the downstream was the highest. Keywords: Salo River, Periphyton, Ceramic Substrate, Biomass (AFDM)

Abstract

A study of mangrove forest at Tanjung Sum Village, Kuala Kampar District was conducted in January 2016. The aim of this study was to determine the spescies composition, dominant species and conditions of mangrove vegetation. The survey method was used in this research, where the observations were made with the line transect method. The results showed the mangrove ecosystem had 11 species of mangrove, consisting of 8 families. These species were Avicennia. alba, A. marina, Nypa fructicans, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Rizophora apiculata, R. stylosa, Lumnutzera littorea, Xylocarpus granatum, Sonneratia alba, Thespenia populnea and Acrostichum sp. The importance value was highest on the group tree of A. alba (i.e.137.69%, at Station 1), the highest importance values was at station 2 (207.69%) and station 3 (113.06%). In the group of seedling the highest INP was recorded on T. populnea (137.59%) at station 1, at station 2 on T. populnea with INP 165%, and the highest INP at station 3, R. stylosa was 193.04%.The conditions of mangrove ecosystem at all stations can be categorized in a good condition with very good criteria.

Abstract

Nitrate and Phosphate concentration is related to fertility of the water andthus as a basis determine the trophic status of the waters. A research aims tounderstand the trophical status of the waters of the Solok Pulau lake, an oxbowlake located in the Tanjung Balam Village, was conducted in January-Febuary2015. A purposive sampling method was applied for taking the water sample. There were 4 stations, namely St 1 (in the inlet from the Kampar River), St 2 (inthe middle of the lake), St3 (in the lake inlet from the Tangon River) and St 4 (inthe distanct part of the lake). Samplings were conducted 3 times, once/ week.Water samples were taken from the surface. Results shown that the nitrate concentration was ranged from 0.082 -0.159 mg/L and phosphate 0.023 - 0.033 mg/L, temperature 28 - 29°C,transparency 46 - 53 cm, depth 147 - 297 cm, current speed 3 - 15 cm/s, pH 5.5,dissolved oxygen (DO) 1.29 – 2.17 mg/L. Based on nitrate concentration, thetrophic status of the Solok Pulau Lake was oligotrophic, while based onphosphate concentration, it can be categorized as mesotrophic.Keyword: trophic status, nitrate, phosphate, Solok Pulau lake, oxbow lake
