Abstract

To investigate Eschericiacoli infections in poultry flocks, 291 tissue samples from 237 necropsied carcasses submitted from ninety-nine (99) poultry flocks in north central Nigeria were analysed. These flocks comprised layer chicken, broiler, pullet, cockerel, turkey, quail, guinea fowl and ducks. Tissue samples were pre-enriched in 10 mL buffered peptone water media and aliquots were inoculated into selective enrichment broth, sub-cultured onEosin Methylene Blue (EMB) agar and MacConkey agar (MCA) and colonies of E. coli was examined based on cultural morphological characteristics. Layer poultry and laying quails exhibited reproductive lesions which correlates with history of disruption and reduction in egg production. Antibiotics resistance rate was significant (p <0.01) with macrolide and penicillin classes been the most resistant antibiotics in layers and broiler, while quinolones and aminoglycoside were most significantly susceptible (p <0.01). Multidrug resistance (MDR) was found in 56% of the E. coli isolates, with high prevalence in younger birds.

Abstract

Abstract

Coccidiosis have been reported to cause severe economic losses in small ruminants livestock industry. Subclinical coccidiosis is common among small ruminants and clinical occurs mainly in young's animals. Coccidiosis is caused by highly host-specific Eimeria species. Strategies to control traditionally rely on the use of management practices combined with anticoccidial treatments. The development of alternative, safer, and ecofriendly anticoccidial agents have become priority in most parts of the world. Essential oils have been shown to exhibit antiparasitic activity and may control protozoal pathogens. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of Eimeria species in sheep and goats and demonstrated life cycle, clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment and potency use of essential oils in the treatment of coccidiosis.

Abstract

The amino acid histidine is the source of the special nutraceutical ergothioneine (ERG), which is a potent antioxidant. Higher plants and animals, who obtain it from the soil and their food, respectively, do not synthesize it; instead, they obtain it through particular microorganisms, such as actinobacteria and mushrooms. Solute carrier family 22, member 4 (SLC22A4), sometimes referred to as organic cation transporter novel type-1 is an incredibly selective transporter for the substance that is only present in animals (OCTN-1). Depending on how OCTN 1 is expressed in different tissues, particularly in those that are more susceptible to oxidative stress, such as erythrocytes, the buildup of ERG differs. ERG concentration is decreased in a number of chronic inflammatory illnesses, and it appears to have potent cytoprotective actions. It has been certified to be relatively safe by regulatory authorities compared to many other antioxidants.

Abstract

Experiments were performed to determine the effects of ascorbic acid on haematological and water quality parameters of Clarias gariepinus subjected to road transportation. A total of 40 apparently healthy adult Clarias gariepinus of an average weight of 450.46 ± 23.06 g and an average length of 38. 23 ± 4.46 cm were used for the experiment and were divided into two groups. Group I (AAF) was administered ascorbic acid daily for one month and on the day of transportation while group II (NAF) was not administered. After transportation of the erythrocyte counts, packed cell volume was significantly higher in group I (P < 0.05). Total leucocyte count, neutrophil count, and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio of group I were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in group I compared to group II. The concentrations of nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in group II compared to group I post-transportation. The dissolved oxygen content of group I was however higher (P < 0.05) in group I compared to group II. It was therefore concluded that ascorbic acid modulated some haematological and water quality parameters of Clarias gariepinus and may be beneficial to the fish in ameliorating the stress of transportation.

Abstract

Abstract

Experiments were performed to evaluate the haematological (erythrocyte and leucocyte parameters) response of West African Dwarf goats following oestrus synchronisation and superovulation protocol. Twenty-four clinically healthy female goats aged 2.34 ± 0.4 years and average body weight of 13.83 ± 0.7 kg was used for the experiment. The goats were divided into two groups. Group I goats was synchronized using Controlled Internal Drug Release (CIDR) for 18 days with the first day of insertion as day 0. On day 16 following CIDR insertion into the vagina, a single dose of 500 IU equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) was administered to each doe intramuscularly while group II served as the control was subjected to the same housing and environmental conditions but was not synchronized. superovulation was induced with porcine follicle stimulating hormone (pFSH) which was injected intramuscularly at a rate of 5mg/kg in reducing doses twice a day at 06.00 h and 18.00 h for 3 days starting from 48hr i.e., 2 days before CIDR removal (day 17). A blood sample of 5 mL was collected by jugular venipuncture of each of the goats before the protocol (Day 0) and at the end of the protocol (Day 18). All erythrocyte parameters evaluated showed a significantly higher value in group II (control) compared to group I post-oestrus synchronisation while total leucocyte count, neutrophil count and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio values obtained after the protocol were also higher in group I (P < 0.05) compared to group II. It is therefore concluded that oestrus synchronisation and superovulation may elicit stress in West African Dwarf goats and an appropriate antioxidant should be part of the protocol.
