Abstract

This research was done as an effort to observe, write, and publicize  eco-activism and achievements by a number of eco-actors in the midst of an increasingly natural environmental crisis, to be used as stimuli and teaching materials for the course of  EcoArt. A number of artists practicing ecoartivism were purposively selected as a sample; their works and achievements are exposed. They are Endar Progresto, Widya Purwoko, Bernadeta Pudiasminarsih (Dyas Ecoprint), and Nasirun. These eco-activists not only work ecologically real, but also creatively communicate ecological values to surrounding communities to change. Nevertheless campaigning this environmental crisis for the better cannot be done partially, but must be jointly supported, organized and socialised continuously. For this reason, their works and achievements, as well as their individual ecoartivism need to be exposed, documented, and assembled as one unit as part of selected subjects of the EcoArt Course in the Fine Arts Department of the Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta, to generate  enthusiasm in articulating or representing ecological concerns for ecosystem sustainability and preservation of natural environment through Art.

Abstract

This paper introduces the reconciliation as well as an analysis on the divide between contemporary and classical aesthetics in architecture. The analysis outlines the segmentation as one of standards rather than of aesthetic appeal, concluding with a proposal for the reconciliation by means of integrating modern and contemporary art into today’s architecture. This reconciliation would not only serve as an artistic take on architecture, but also raise awareness on the subjectivity of beauty in architecture. In the conclusion of this paper, there are highlighted illustrations demonstrating the picturesque outcome of using this proposed method of integration.

Abstract

Islam is often referred as being a radical movement or activity. Sabyan Gambus, through their song cover, responses to the situation in their song “Deen Assalam”. This song was created as an effort to minimize and reduce the society’s misthinking on the concept and implementation of Islamic teaching. Thus, a study of values implied in the song becomes essential to view such a perception shift within the society as a legitimation upon the work as well as the positioning of Islam in the structural world of Indonesian people. An analysis of the song lyrics is, accordingly, essentially needed. The theory of Riffaterre is applied to study the song lyric. Meanwhile, a theory of Bourdieu is employed to review the legitimation achievement of the work production practices. The behaviorism method is used in analyzing the agents’ behaviors during the production process to reach a legitimation that can be considered as shifting of position and perception of the society. The legitimation of Sabyan Gambus’ works by analyzing the response from the society can be considered as some possibilities of the emergence of a more moderate Islam in Indonesia. The analysis of internal meaning may also create some possibilities to audience to gain the power of value that affects the power relation and other external factors. Therefore, both internal and external work analyses are necessary to show the influence of work production and its legitimation achievement on its position and perception of the society.

Abstract

This article describes the postcolonial aesthetic hegemony which is represented in illustration pictures in one of the educational tourist attractions in Yogyakarta, namely Taman Pintar, along with its causes. This study used a hermeneutic approach, with the main instrument is the researcher himself as a human instrument. Meanwhile, the analysis technique used is descriptive qualitative. The results of the analysis revealed some points. Firstly, the form of postcolonial aesthetic hegemony in illustration pictures of Taman Pintar, is manifested by the use of pictures of the inventors of modern science. All of the inventors came from the West, and none of them came from the East. This has lead to the construction of discourse with Western bias. This phenomenon is a kind of losing the battle in the cultural constellation that is not supposed to be transformed and internalized to young generations that are going to be the next generations of this country in the future. Secondly, this phenomenon of Western hegemony is caused mainly by the existence of the strong burden of Western post-colonialism syndrome faced by this nation, Indonesia.

Abstract

The research, by referring to the Dur Untash city at the Symbolic level, seeks to answer the question that how in urban semiotics, the city's identity has acquired a semantic significance beyond its significance. The situation of the city expresses a state that any kind of dominant discourses has lost their accreditation capacity and authority, and the audience cannot rely on any of the currents that were considered as definitive. City identity is nothing but fractal games that there is no source of authority that indicates the fixed meaning of these formulas and this is a social contract. These contracts derive from the semiotic rules which is agreed upon in the community. In this game will be try to impose certain meanings on the city identity using the symbolic function; to internalize meta-narrative (internalization process) and in this way, the identity and the presence of the Dur-Untash city will be recorded in time and reach an immortal realm.

Abstract

Movies represent women differently from men. Some try to raise women’s dignity, and some still impose traditional values on them. This paper studies the representation of the characters of female superhero in The Incredibles 1 and 2 which seem to support women’s emancipation. However, there are some ideas conveyed through the mise- en-scéne which still indicate that the movie series do not fully emancipate women. The Incredibles 1 and 2 movie series have been chosen as the object of the study for their typical characteristics when female superhero plays the role. The purpose of this paper is to examine how women are represented through visuals and character roles in The Incredibles 1 and 2. The movies were analyzed through a critical discourse approach. The analysis focused on the language beyond sentences and aspects outside the language, such as power relation, social context, and ideology. The result of the analysis shows that the female character in the movies still upholds traditional values, such as male domination, revealing that these movies are not emancipatory for women. Moreover, women are still degraded and objectified through their body. Therefore, these movies can be seen as a form of pseudo-empowerment, where something is seen as empowering but actually it is not.
