Indonesian Journal of Integrated English Language Teaching (IJIELT) is a scholarly peer-reviewed journal focusing on theories, approaches, methods, systems, designs, applications, implementations, and evaluations of integrated curricula. IJIELT welcomes authors to publish research or non-research articles on integrated English Language Teaching (ELT). Abstract

This study investigates the strategies of Indonesia EFL learners employed for expressing greeting in different status and gender. 25 students from English Education Department of State Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau asked to fulfill Discourse Completion Test (DCT). The result indicated that there are variation of strategies in performing greeting in relation to contextual variable which include gender (male and female) and status (high and equal) of interlocutor. The findings suggested that gender did not influence EFL learners’ initiating act of greeting expression. Meanwhile, status of interlocutor influenced EFL learners’ greeting expression. Finally, expression “assalamu’alaikum” used by almost all EFL learners to both higher status interlocutors (male and female) who have good understanding of Islamic doctrines. And female EFL learners tend to use non verbal form of greeting rather than male EFL learners.

Abstract

Teaching grammar for beginner is not quite easy, but it is not difficult to teach. Young learners have their own way to accept a new knowledge and they will accept all of it by happiness. Teacher need to find good method and good media to teach grammar, and one of the effective methods is using games although children learn a language faster than adults, they do not learn through traditional language teaching methods. Through fun activities children can learn a language better as learning becomes natural for them since these activities do not make them conscious that they are learning a language.

Abstract

Reading cannot be separated in University level. Reading can be defined as a compulsory subject which consists of Intensive Reading and Extensive Reading. These subjects must be completed in different level. Extensive reading is the way for students to develop their competencies. However, most of students do not read in English extensively. They do not read English book, magazine, and others to improve their competencies meanwhile they are English students. In case, their motivation and scores are low. However, the lecturer has to integrate technology to improve, motivate and support them to read extensively. This research was qualitative research. The interview was the instrument. Finding showed that students’ scores and motivation increase and they were accustomed to read extensively.

Abstract

Technology, which basically helps human do things easier, has also emerged in helping learners perform a better learning. This descriptive study explores the screen magnifier as assistive technology in education which is installed in many electronic devices for visual assistance. It also pinpoints how the technology works, characteristics of the students who use the technology, issues of the technologies use in the classroom (including costs). The study indicates that screen magnifier is crucially important for low vision students because most learning activities require a lot of intensive eye sight. Furthermore, the users may find screen magnifier easy to install and to use. Besides that, this study suggests that students also get accommodation besides using Screen Magnifier individually in the classrooms.

Abstract

Second language acquisition is the study how second languages are learned and the factors that influence the process. Exposing your child to a second language acquisition while young allows him or her to optimize his or her learning potential, helping to shape the brain at its most flexible stage. Young children are uniquely suited to learning a second language. Learning a second language at a young age is cognitively as easy as learning a first language. This paper examines some benefits of early second language acquisition.

Abstract

This research focuses on comparing the language learning strategies preference between male and female students at State Senior High School 12 Pekanbaru. The aim of this research is to find out the language learning strategies of male students of the tenth grade at State Senior High School 12 Pekanbaru, to find out the language learning strategies of female students, and to find out whether there is or no a significant difference on language learning strategies preference between male and female students. A total of 90 male and 90 female students were participated in this research. They were taken from 45% of the total population. By using Simple Random Technique, 9 male and 9 female students were randomly taken from each class. The data were collected by using adapted SILL questionnaire version 7.0 translated to Bahasa Indonesia. By using Independent sample t-test formula on SPSS version 17 the collected data were analyzed. The findings show that both male and female students language learning strategies preference were Metacognitive Strategies, and there is no significant difference on the language learning strategies preference between male and female students in learning English at State Senior High School 12 Pekanbaru. Based on the data analysis, the researchers concluded that there is no significant difference on the language learning strategies preference between male and female of the tenth grade students at State Senior High School 12 Pekanbaru in learning English.

Abstract

This study aims to examine learners’ use of listening strategies focusing on two main aspects: the listening strategy groups and the individual listening strategies used by EFL learners and the differences in the ways the listening strategies were used by effective and less effective listeners. To collect the data, the instrument was a questionnaire. The findings demonstrated that the participants were aware of listening strategies at the average level.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate and explore school-based curriculum in teaching English at One Elementary School related to the curriculum policy and curriculum instructional of English as a local content in Elementary School. This case-study research employed interview, observation, document analysis and logbook to collect the data about the development and implementation of school-based curriculum (SBC) in teaching English at one elementary. The participants of this study are vice-principal of curriculum affair, teacher of English and student. Evidence from all data sources shows that between the development and implementing are not balance because the instructional documents, facilities, teaching-learning process are not supported each other. In conclusion, all of the aspects in developing and implementing SBC in teaching English at Elementary School should be reviewed and improved.

Abstract

In increasing students’ reading comprehension, various techniques have been applied by the lecturer. However, based on the preliminary study, it was found that the students have low comprehension in reading, including the narrative text. Numbered head together technique was offered to improve students’ reading comprehension. The purpose of the research were to investigate the difference of students’ reading comprehension on narrative text before and after  being taught by using Numbered Head Together Technique and to investigate the effect of using Numbered Head Together Technique toward students’ reading comprehension of narrative text at the English Education Department of UIN Suska Riau.The research design was quasi experimental research. The population was the third semester students of English Education Department of UIN Suska Riau. Two groups which consisted of 55 students were invited to be samples by using cluster-random sampling. Both groups were administered the pretest and the posttest. The technique of collecting data used test. The technique of data analysis used was paired sample t test. The research found that there was significant difference of students’ reading comprehension on narrative text after being taught by using numbered head together technique for experimental class and non-treatment of numbered head together technique for control class. It was stated by the value of sig. (2-tailed) was 0,000. It was smaller than 0,05. It meant that the use of Numbered head together technique had a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension on narrative text.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the concept circles strategy on Students’ writing ability in descriptive text. The writer conducted pre experimental research. The sample consisted of 29 students. Before giving treatment, the students were given pre-test, and post-test after students were given treatment. The technique of collecting the data was the writing test. The technique of data analysis used paired sample T-test formula in order to find out the significant effect that compares pre-test and post-test score in one class only analyzed by using SPSS 16.0 version. Based on the data analysis, T showed 8.382 compared at significant level 5% (2.05), and at level 1% (2.76). It can be read 2.05<8.382>2.76. Therefore, there is a significant effect of using Concept Circles Strategy at Darul Hikmah Islamic Senior High School Pekanbaru.
