Abstract

This qualitative study is aimed at discovering the similarities of onomatope (not onomatopoeia) animal sounds between two unrelated languages, Indonesian and English. The investigation operates on phonological system with some goals to achieve; to describe how sounds of onomatope animal correspond, to explain why the two languages share similarities in their onomatope animal sounds.  The data in this research are from Indonesian and English comics which are backed up by interviews with twenty-six informants consisting of eleven adults and fifteen children. The interviews are aimed at reinforcing the collected data and also disqualifying several lingual units which under suspicion of loan sound imitations. The research findings reveal that out of 22 (twenty-two) onomatope animal sounds gathered as the research data, there are only 15 (fifteen) sharing the same phoneme distribution after conducting sound correspondence. The phoneme distribution occurs mostly on onset position, the second is on coda position, and the least is on nucleus position. There are three factors which evoke the similarities or that can be called convergence. First, because of similarities in phoneme inventories. Second, because of similarities in phonotactic rules. Third, because of same sound symbolism which apply to both Indonesian and English.

Abstract

Society has enjoyed the ease of communication afforded by “Whatsapp”, a popular freeware and cross-platform communication application. “Whatsapp”’s popularity has invited educators to experiment with it in various ways to shore up education. This study was conducted to describe students’ perceptions on the use of “Whatsapp” for teaching and learning vocabulary. A vocabulary virtual class in the form of a “Whatsapp” group where students needed to enroll was created for that purpose. This virtual class exempted the students from physically attending the physical class as it enabled students to remotely attend the class. Teaching and learning methods of vocabulary in the virtual class included using pictures, translation, and sentence construction. At the end of the class, the students were to inform the researchers about their perceptions of the virtual class. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. Data was collected through a paper-based questionnaire, which was distributed to all students in a face-to-face class, a session taking place two days prior to the research. The virtual vocabulary class that the researchers administered overall received positive feedbacks from the learners. However, teaching and learning vocabulary using “Whatsapp” also had its own drawback.

Abstract

AbstractThe genre-based approach has been known to characterize pedagogical practices during the implementation of the 2006 school-level curriculum.  Despite its prevalent use and overwhelming support by school stakeholders,  the efficacy of this approach was nonetheless questionable. This paper aims to revisit the 2006 School level curriculum, its plausibility and compatibality with individual contexts and its bearing on EFL practices. It also disusses the Genre-based approach in terms of  its  underlying paradigms, and  possible variables and contextual factors which might have impinged on its implementation. Some research findings on the adoption of the approach in Southeast Asia context are also presented to provide insights into how the Genre-based approach could be efficiently adopted. This essay concludes with some ideas for the amendment to  the 2006 school- level curriculum and how the genre-based approach might still be relevant in the context of teaching writing skills at tertiary education.

Results revealed that students' feedback of the implementation of writing workshop in the class for improving their writing skills were generally positive. Through writing workshop, the writing process becomes more attractive for students. To the lecturers, act as a mentor author, modeling writing techniques and conferring with students as they move through the writing process perceptions give a diverse point of view in improving students’ writing competency. Keywords: writing, writing workshop, college students

Abstract

AbstractAmong words classes or parts of speech a noun and a verb or precisely a noun phrase and a verb phrase play a very important role in syntax. In English, they mark the presence of sentence. The relationship between them is very close that one may cause the presence of another. This is often called a subject-predicate relationship and their degree is a bilateral dependency i.e. the verb phrase determines the noun phrase called valence and the noun phrase determines the verb through agreement (Bussman, 1996:1139). Other relationships among different phrases are one-sided or in the form of modifiers, subordinators, or complementizers, one is more important than others. This paper attempts to discuss a noun phrase and a verb phrase as the main part of a sentence. Some special characteristics of the noun phrase and the verb phrase are discussed. This paper also tries to see if other sentence elements such as an adjectival, adverbial, and prepositional phrases can have an emphasis in a sentence.
