Abstract

AbstractNot only does love concern with different sexes of human beings but it also is about God, nature, brotherhood, friendship, and humanity itself. Love does not demand but gives and more it sacrifices for the sake of itself. Pathfinder thus offers a great value of love.Love, despite its universality and immense power embracing human life, might be bound by certain situation and condition as it occurred to Pathfinder. Through an objective approach, this paper tries to put forward how the main character, Pathfinder realized that his love was bound to nature, his nature. The problem emerging from the story concerns the kind of love within the personality of Pathfinder so that he can sincerely encounter, though painfully, his unsuccessful love based on his awareness of his nature.Through a hard effort of easing his own bleeding heart of dealing with the failure in gaining his love, Pathfinder comes to his solution that he has to change his love, from a love of a man towards a woman into a love of a father to his daughter. He has to realize that his nature is different from that of Mabels. His age, way of life, customs, neighborhood, and his identity show that he does not match Mabel and so hers to him. His nature calls him back and gives him enlightenment of who he really is. He is neither an Indian nor a white, but he is both an Indian and a white man. That is his accomplishment of his quest on his identity.

Abstract

Listening skill is often ignored. David Nunan (1997) commented that listening is the "Cinderella Skill" which is overlooked by its elder sister "speaking" in SL learning. Speaking and writing skill has become the standard of the knowledge of second language, listening and reading have been turned to be the secondary ones. On the other hand, listening is vital in the language classroom because it provides input for the learner. In fact, most English listening teachers focus on testing learners listening skill rather than on developing the learners’ listening skill. This practice tends to make them anxious and tends to become ineffective listeners. This condition brings about the learners’ difficulties in comprehending listening materials. Good English teachers should minimize such a condition. This article attempts to find ways of creating good atmosphere for listening class. What should we “as teachers’ do to respond the problem? Metacognitive is theory of awareness of what and how to learn. Based on my experience in teaching listening, metacognitive strategies are very valuable for learners to learn listening. Finally, I encourage listening class teachers to promote the strategies to their students. To promote the strategies a teacher should do several steps with the class; discussing learners’ problems, talking the nature of listening, building students’ awareness about the important of learning strategies, training the students about metacognitive strategies, and doing reflection. Abstract

This paper is intended to help novice researchers understand key concepts in educational research, particularly in the field of language education. It uses as its samples two peer-reviewed research articles on early childhood literacy development, bilingual and multilingual issues and identity consitution. It  first attempts to analyze how the key concepts in educational research were incorporated into the research process. Of particular importance, this paper critically looks at the extent to which those key concepts were logically linked so as to provide the research with strong coherence. The discussion also takes into account the issues of ethics, how this was sufficiently dealt with by the author and what possible factors might have come into play to degrade the validity of the research. This paper conludes with my views on the research design and process as a whole and my suggestions on some of the issues uncovered during the discussion.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to explore how the way I use POW+TREE strategy to improve students’ cohesive devices mastery. This research was conducted in one of junior high school in Surakarta at eighth grade students. Based on the preliminary study, I found that students had writing problems in mastering cohesive devices. I chose POW+TREE strategy to improve their writing problems in mastering cohesive devices. This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) research design. The CAR activity involves of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of this study are 29 students in the eighth grade in academic year 2016/2017. The data were collected through writing test, observation, and field-notes.There was an improvement in the students’ score from preliminary study and after the implementation of the strategy. The average score after implementation in cycle 2 was 83.24. As the result of observation sheet, it showed that the students’ interest also increased that was proved by students’ activeness in asking difficult words. The field notes showed that in the teaching and learning process, most of the students enjoyed in writing activity. Hence, it can be concluded that the implementation of POW+TREE strategy was successful for students’ writing ability in mastering cohesive devices.Considering that the strategy had successfully improved the students’ writing ability in mastering cohesive devices it is suggested for future researchers to conduct an experimental research related to this strategy for the same skill.

Abstract

AbstractMultiliteracies in language teaching can make the process of teaching language easier, more interesting and better. This can include the use of technology in the classroom. To apply multiliteracies in the classroom both students and teachers must be multiliterate. In writing class, multiliteracies can be applied by using computer and internet in the teaching and learning process. It can be applied in three steps: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. In preparation step the teacher can find sources of teaching material from textbooks and browsing in the internet. Then, he/she can use power points when presenting the teaching material, giving exercises and task. In the last step, evaluation, the teacher gives an assignment and the students should submit their work via email to the teacher. The teacher then gives some feedback using computer (comment bar) and send it back to the students. The students must revise the work based on the teacher's feedback and send again to the teacher. This way of teaching is more interesting for the students, more efficient and therefore can give better result in learning.

Abstract

AbstractTomlinson(2010) states that learners of English all over the world are being tested on a variety of English they do not and never will speak. He further emphasizes that the students are being tested on British and American English and not on Singaporean English or Brazilian English or the International English that they speak.Indeed, language and culture are two sides of a coin. The teaching of language cannot be divorced from the teaching of culture. With the emergence of the notion “World Englishes”, it is high time to reconsider which English and whose culture should be taught and introduced to our students. It is the duty of English teachers to determine which English and whose culture to be taught. It is a waste of time, energy, and money to teach a variety of English that has nothing to do with the future life of our students. The paper tries to discuss about the cultural aspects that should be introduced to ourEnglish classes. It is hoped that English teachers realize about the kind of English needed by the students.

Abstract

This study on indigenous healing practices because of the interesting fact that despite the presence of medical advancement, there are still people who have the tendency to consult first a folk healer before seeking the help of modern medical practitioners. And what makes it more interesting is that even professionals seek for the help of folk healers. We may have choices on whom to seek and where to go when we have physical ailments but in this age of modern technology, why such healing tradition continues to exist and co-exist with modern medicine remains a baffling question. But these questions were given answers through this research which aimed at probing into the narratives of the healers and their patients on the curative properties and healing remedies of an age-old tradition. Thus, this is a humble endeavor to sustain the perpetuation of Bicol culture and tradition focusing on the stories on folk healing traditions in order to record, preserve and understand the functions in the society of these indigenous age-old healing practices that are struggling to survive yet undeniably at the brink of extinction. The study focused on the collection, translation, and analysis of folk healing narratives in the selected barangays of Bato, Camarines Sur. The study would like to answer the following questions: (1) What types of indigenous healing practices are evident in the narratives? (2) What do these narratives relate in terms of: (a) Abstract/summary; (b) Orientation in terms of time, place, person, situation; (c) Complicating action; (d) Evaluation; (e) Resolution/Result. (3) What roles in the community do these folk healing narratives reveal? (4) What educational material could be produced to preserve and showcase these indigenous healing practices?            With regard to the scope of the study, it focused on narratives on traditional healing in the barangays of Bato, Camarines Sur namely; Divina Pastora, Tres Reyes and Santa Cruz being the most densely populated barangays in the roadside of Bato, Camarines Sur. The study gave emphasis on the first-hand information based on the personal experiences of the key informants who will be composed of the healers and their patients. It delimited itself to the collection, translation, and analysis of the narratives on folk healing practices and not mainly on the rituals and processes involve in healing.           Further, this study has the intention to benefit some sectors of the society such as the people of Bato; the Local Government Unit of Bato, Camarines Sur; Camarines Sur itself; students who are taking English, Literature and Social Sciences; medical practitioners, the folk healers themselves and future researchers who would like to undergo a study of the same kind and to the researcher himself.
