Abstract

The present research was studied the effect of feeding level od fattening period on the carcass characteristics (percentage of carcass, back fat thickness and loin eye area) of Pesisir cattle. Treatments of feeding included: Al = 50 % concentrate + 50 % ammoniated rice straw, A2 = 75 % concentrate + 25 % ammoniated rice straw. The feed were offered in two fattening periods of B1 = 3 months and B2 = 4 months. Data were statistically analized in randomized block design with three blocks. Results showed that there was no interaction effect between the levels of feeding and fattening periods to the percentage of carcass, the back fat thickness and the loin eye area of the Pesisir cattle (P> 0,05). The higher of concentrate percentage used in the feed and the longer the fattening period were followed by the thicker the back fat and the wider the loin eye area (P<0.05).

Abstract

The aim of the present work was to study the physical characteristics of swamp buffalo population in Kampar sub district, Riau province. Thirty buffalos which were distributed in 5 villages (Kampar, Padang Mutung, Pulau Rambai, Panyasauan, and Batu Belah) were selected by Multi Stage Stratified Cluster Purposive Sampling Method. The selected animals which were consisted of 15 males and 15 females were observed for physical performance and measured for some body parameters. Physical performances observed and body parameters measured included: horn form; color of hair, skin and foot: form of foot and udder; body length, thorax circle, shoulder high, shoulder circle, thorax high and scrotum circle. The quantitative data were tabulated for calculation of means and standard deviation. It was found that about 83,3 % of buffalo population had horn with wider form, 72,3 % hair color of blackish grey, 61,2 % skin color of blackish gray, 100 % foot color of grey, 100 % foot form of well built foot and 100 % udder form of symmetric. The body measurement data reflected that the body development of the buffalo in Kampar closely related to their original population in India.

Abstract

Using secondary data, a survey was conducted to assess the availability of potentially beef cattle feed in West Sumatra province. Two methods were applied to analye the collected data; 1) supporting capacity index (IDD) developed by Livestock Research Institute at Ciawi Bogor which also legally accepted as an instrument to determine regional capacity in supporting cattle feed. 2). Nell and Rollinson method which has been applied in Indonesia since 1974 supported by UNDP. Results showed that by the first method (IDD), West Sumatra has 1,888,032.77 ton and 459,041,026 ton potential feed from agriculture and agricultural by products respectively in 2007. The second Nell and Rollinson method confirmed that West Sumatra has 33,286,255,20 ton from grass production and 588,638.72 ton agricultural by products. Compared between the West Sumatra regional capacity to support beef cattle as 1,028,935.9 animal unit, and ruminants population as 446,072.7 animal unit, there is an additional capacity to keep ruminants as 562,863.2 animal unit. Based on the cattle contribution as 63 % to total population, West Sumatra could increase its support to cattle population by 355,110.6 animal unit. Nell and Rollinson showed an optimistic figure, namely 1,408,892 animal unit for cattle.

Abstract

Earthworms are invertebrate with the unique immune system, since they are able to hold out bacterium pathogen in growing medium. Their immune system consists of a lot of reactions including: fagocytosis, encapsulation, agglutination, opsonisation and lysis for foreign component attacked. There are some small molecules and extra cellular proteins dilute in coelomic earthworm that play at important role in immune system and antibacterial agent. The present experiment was done to study the effect of several different treatments (feeding, living, medium, electricity stimulation) on the molecules resistance and activity of anti bacterial protein in coelomic of earthworms. Coelomic dilution was extracted by using electricity stimulation at 6 volt, and the activity of anti bacterial protein was measured by spectrophotometer, and agar diffusion. Protein extra cellular molecular size in coelomic dilution was observed by Sodium Duodecil Sulphate (SDS) electrophoresis. Results showed that the activity of anti bacterial protein in coelomic dilution, and molecule with 29 kDa size were deleted by tretments. Extraction of coelomic dilution which contained of activity of anti bacterial protein could be done in feces from cow which was never stimulated before.

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the efect of ammoniation on the digestibility of oil palm frond. As treatments, oil palm frond was mixed with difference levels of urea of 0, 3, 6 and 9 % of DM basis. The mixtures were then added 15 % dried chicken manure and the incubated in anaerobic condition for one week. Parameters measured included: fiber fractions content and digestibility of DM and OM. Data were statistically analyed by variance analysis in a block randomized design. Results showed that the treatments gave significant efect on the digestibility. Digestibility of DM and OM of oil palm frond treated with 6 and 9 % urea were higher than that of treated with 0 and 3 % of urea. The best digestibility was found by ammoniation with 6 % urea.

Abstract

The objective of this experiment was to study the quality of yoghurt produced by using a commercial starter culture of lactobacillus bulgaricus. Raw milk which was prepared by mixing 12 % powder milk into distilled water was placed into 12 Erlenmeyer glasses of 250 ml each. The glasses were divided into 3 groups of 4 glasses each as replications. Each group of milk in the glasses was added 3 different levels of 5; 7.5 and 10 % of commercial starter of L. bulgaricus. After well mixing, the Erlenmeyer's were incubated in an oven with temperature of 40 - 45oC for 5-6 hours to produce yoghurt. The yoghurt products were chemically analyzed for determination of pH, lactic acid, and fat and crude protein content. Data were statistically analyzed for variance analysis in a completely randomized design. Results showed that there were no significant efects of using different levels of starter culture. The quality of yoghurt products in term of pH, acidity, protein and content satisfied the quality standard.

Abstract

The research was aimed to evaluate the effect of using cassava starch on the quality and acceptability of meatball. Six kilograms of ground beef meat which have been well mixed with spices of salt, garlic and pepper were divided into 5 sub-groups. Each sub-group of dough was mixed with 5 difrerent levels of cassava starch of 0 % (R0), 5 % (R1), 10 % (R2), 15 % (R3) and 20 % (R4), respectively. The dough were then made in small ball form (meatball) and subdivided into 4 sub-sub-groups as replications. The raw dough of meat ball was then cooked in boiling water for 15 minutes to produce ready to eat meatball products. The products were measured for pH, moisture and protein content, and acceptability. Results indicated that pH, moisture and protein content of the meatball were decreased significantly (P<0,01) by increasing the use of cassava starch. Acceptability of meatball by test consumers, however, was not significantly affected by the use of cassava starch. Therefore, cassava starch could be used up to 20 % in making meat ball.

Abstract

The present research was conducted to investigate the potency and viabitity of oocytes of Simmental cattle for production of embryo in in-vitro method. Oacytes were collected from the ovaries of slaughtered Simmental cattle. At first, the ovaries were cleaned and measured for weigh, length, diameter and thickness. The ovaries were then sliced to collect oocyte follicles. The collected oocytes which were devided into 3 groups based on length size (<2, 2-6 and >6 mm) were kept in ringer solution (0,9 % Nacl) by temperature of 35oC. By using microscope the physical performances of the oocytes were observed and then classified into 3 different qualities of A, B and C/D. The oocytes of A ond B quality were kept in TCM-199 medium for maturity process. Their viability was described as percentage af oocytes which reach metaphase II (M-II). stage during the proces of maturity. The data was statistically analyzed by t-test. Results of the experiment showed that the physical measurement af ovaries were found significant diferent (P>0,05) between the left and right sides, but the potency of follicles from the both sides were not significant different (P>0,05). The percentage of oocytes reach the metaphase II stage was about 51,28 s/d 13,65 %. It was concluded that Simmental has a high the potency and viability oocytes for embryos production in vitro.
