Abstract

The present research work deals with the study of some of the important physico-chemical parameters of wastewater effluents collected from Maroua cotton processing plant named “SODECOTON”. The effluents were studied from the month of June 2016 to August 2017. A preliminary investigation was carried out on the source of water used by the plant and management of its wastewater effluent. All parameter were analyzed as per the standard methods. Water quality parameters such as temperature, pH, Electrical Conductivity, Total Dissolved Solid, Total Suspended Solid, Biological Oxygen Demand, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Total Nitrogen Kjeldahl, Nitrate and Phosphate were analysed. Results of this study shows that nearly all values of these parameters were above permissible limit. These values are significantly higher during the rainy season (from May –December) than dry season (January-April). Water used by the plant is from bore hole. This water is treated by less adapted technology prior to use and thus probably contribute in the pollution load of the plant’s wastewater effluent. Wastewater from the plant is discharged without being treated and without any quality analysis. This behaviour is due to very relax regulation, absence of monitoring and enforcement by government authorities.

Abstract

The chemical modification using esterification method to modification the papyrus fiber cellulose with citric acid was studied. Parameters investigated included the citrate acid concentration (between 0.3 to 0.6 M), and reaction temperature (from 110 to 140o C). The ester cellulose, which was a new product reaction between citric acid and cellulose, had Substitution Degree (SD) from 0.088 to 1.147 and yield from 73.75% to 97.73%. The esterification product was analyzed with FTIR spectrophotometer and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to identify the functional groups and the morphology of ester cellulose. Based on this research, modified cellulose have the peak of ester carbonyl functional group (C=O) at 1740.43 cm-1 and O-H alcohol functional group (O-H) at band 3406.82cm-1. Modification with citric acid 0.6 M at 120o C is the best condition to get the high DS value 1.147 in 97.73 yield as a brown powder.

Abstract

Renewable materials have gained significant attraction as reinforcement in polymer matrix composites. Naturally woven coconut leaf sheath (CLS) fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared by compression molding. Different composites were fabricated varying the weight percentage of CLS fiber (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 wt%) . Hydrophilic nature of the CLS fiber was evaluated using water uptake test. Structural feature of the composites was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy. Mechanical performance was investigated using tensile and bending tests. Fiber reinforcement significantly increased the mechanical properties of the composites. Moreover, thermal properties and degradation nature of the composites were investigated.

Abstract

Candida albicans is one of fungi that can cause various infections. This fungal infection is known as candidiasis and some people often suffer from candidiasis. The sweaty and moisty skin is a factor that allows the growth of fungi causing skin diseases. The plants that can be used as antifungal is white plumeria leaves (Plumeria alba L.). Ethanol extract of white plumeria leaves contains alkaloid and saponin active compounds, to ease its use and to get the maximum effect, then white plumeria leaves are formulated into ointment dosage form. This research is to know the antifungal activity of extract, to formulate ointment and to know the characteristic of the extract. The research begins with determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of extract against C. albicans, then formulation of ointment dosage. The physical properties of the ointment is tested including homogeneity test, pH, dispersive power, protection power, adhesion and hedonic and antifungal activity. The method used in determining MIC and the activity test of dosage is agar-well diffusion method. The MIC value of extract was 5 ppm with a 1.22 mm inhibition zone. Extract has a form of semisolid, white colour, distinctive odor, homogeneous, protective, pH of 5.07-5.59, dispersive power of 5,09-5,78 cm, adhesion of 1.00-2.33 seconds and antifungal activity of ointment at day 0 for concentrations of 5, 10 and 15 ppm respectively are 2.93; 5.2 and 7.87 mm and at day 15 for concentrations of 5, 10 and 15 ppm respectively are 3.68; 4.87 and 5.82 m

Abstract

Pb(ZrxTi1-x)O3 has extensive application in electronic components as a thin layer. The densification layer is controlled by some factor such as precursor composition and heating techniques. Therefore, it is necessary to get simply precursor synthesis from zirconium(IV) nitrate stabilized polyol-acetate. In other hand, hydrolysis factor and the heating rate are affected as well as factor control. The PZT synthesis (55:45) was varied in Rw ratio as comparing water mole and the total mole of metal. The result of Rw = 0, 6, 9, and 12 are coated on silicon substrates and annealed with heating rates variate 1, 5, 10, and 30 °C/min for 650°C. The characterization and analysis were performed with FTIR and a microscope. Furthermore, the thermal dynamic behavior and crystal orientation are observed. The results show PZT synthesis from zirconium(IV) nitrate precurseor and PEG-acetate was stable and that can reproduce. The effect of rising of heating rate causes the dissipating PZT agglomeration, while the addition of water causes the cracking of crystals to become more massive.

Abstract

The current work aims to determine antibacterial activities of ethanol extracts of Eucheuma spinosum against Staphylococcus aureus. These were showed through inhibition zones formation, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values. The MIC was determined using dilution test tube method, and the MBC was calculated using streaking method. Qualitative test was applied to determine phytochemical compounds in ethanol extract of E. spinosum. Results showed that ethanol extracts of E. spinosum at concentrations of 1%; 2%; 5%, and 10% (v/v) resulted in inhibition zones of 1.98; 4.14; 7.42; and 10.27 mm, respectively. In addition, concentration of 10% (v/v) was the MIC, and 15% (v/v) was the MBC values of E. spinosum extracts against S. aureus. The phytochemical analysis showed that alkaloids and saponins were the main components detected. Alkaloids positive tests were observed by the formation of brown sediment with Wagner’s reagent, yellow sediment with Mayer’s reagent, and orange sediment with Dragendorff’s reagent. Saponins positive results were detected by the formation of stable foam when the extracts reacted with water and HCl. Overall, these results suggested that E. spinosum extracts have antibacterial properties against Gram-positive bacteria, i.e. S. aureus.

Abstract

Development of diazinon sensors using mixed membranes of nata de coco and Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the SPCE (screen printed carbon electrode) surface has been carried out potentiometrically. The design of the sensor begins with the optimization of Fe3O4 nanoparticles added to the membranes of 50%, 67% and 75% while pH optimization using pH 4-5 acetate buffer and phosphate buffer pH 6-7. The diazinon sensor of the result has been tested at range concentration of 10-12 - 10-5mol.L-1. The results showed that the best sensor performance was 67% Fe3O4 nanoparticles and pH 5. The Nernst factor was 34.5 mV / decade, the detection limit value of 1,3 x 10-9mol.L-1 in the range concentration of 10-11 - 5x10-8 molL-1 with a response time of 140 seconds.

Abstract

Essential oils of canarium tree resin (Canarium indicum L) have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Inflammation of the bronchi and airway remodeling is a major factor in the occurrence of asthma. The purpose of this study was to study the potential of essential oils of canarium tree resin on the expression of TNF-α, changes in bronchial epithelial cell features, MDA levels and protease activity from OVA and LPS exposure in a rat model of asthma. This study used four groups of rat, the negative control group, asthma group, therapy group dose 25 mg/kg BB and 50 mg/kg BB. TNF-α expression was calculated using Walter calculations, histopathologic observation of bronchi was observed using Olympus BX51 microscope, MDA level was measured using Thiobarbituric Acid (TBA) method and measurement of protease activity was done by spectrophotometric method, and analyzed by ANOVA. The results showed that the therapy of essential oils of canarium tree resin at 25 mg/kg BB and 50 mg/kg BB significantly (P<0.05), after treatment for seven days decreased, MDA 44%, Protease activity 46%, improved bronchial epithelium and TNF-α expression by 51%. This study proves that essential oils of canarium tree resin can be effectively used as therapy in asthma model rats.

Abstract

Asthma is a chronic airway disease characterized by significant exacerbation of bronchial spasm (bronchospasm) and airway inflammation. Asthma symptoms become more severe by oral infectious due to exposure of Gram-negative bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The essential oils (EO) of the canary sap (Canarium indicum L.) contained linalool, p-cymene and γ-terpinene as an anti-inflammatory agent. The aim of this study to determine the potency EO canary therapy toward level of malondialdehyde (MDA) and lung histopathology of asthmatic rats. The asthmatic rats were prepared by sensitization of allergent conducted by intraperitonial injection and nebulized of ovalbumin (OVA) also intrasulcular injection of Lipopolysaccaride from Phorphyromonas gingivalis bacteria. Five groups of rats (Rattus norvegicus) were used in this research; ie the control group, the asthmatic group, and three groups with therapy of EO canary the dose of 25 mg/kg BW, 50 mg/kg BW and 100 mg/kg BW for 7 days. The contain of EO canary were analyzed by Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GCMS). The MDA levels were measured using the Thiobarbituric Acid (TBA) technique and histopatology of bronchial stained using  Hematoxilin-Eosin (HE) and observed microscopically. The data were analyzed by One Way ANOVA with Tukey test (α = 0.05). The result showed that EO canary significantly (p < 0.05) decrease MDA levels and repair lung histopatology of asthmatic rats. The analysis EO canary performed by GCMS composed of l-phellandrene; p-cymene; γ-terpinene; linalool; camphor; limonene and 1,8-cineole. It can be concluded EO canary has potency as anti-inflammatory agent of asthmatic condition. The most effective dose therapy was obtained as high as 100 mg/kgBW that decreased 46.56 % level of MDA.

Abstract

A synthesis method for preparing macroporous nitrogen and silver-modified titania via sol-gel route is presented. The addition of nitrogen and silver nanoparticles was carried out simultaneously with a hard templating technique using silica spheres packed into a three dimensional opal structure. The influence of such modifications on the optical and chemical properties of titania was evaluated using photocatalytic degradation under visible light. The macroporous opal templated samples in this work performed better than the commercial titania, Degussa P25. The highest photocatalytic enhancement, showing more than eight times higher activity than the non-modified titania, was achieved by the opal templated sample prepared with 1.0 mol % of silver. Although silver addition and macroporous templating enhanced the visible light activity, the most significant improvement was afforded by the utilization of the silica opal template that gave rise to high surface area (>100 m2 g-1) and promoted the surface charge interaction.
