Abstract

Development of a sustainable city is a complex process with interactions of numerous aspects such as economic, environment, and social in urban living. Architecture is a major part in creating identity or character of the city and influencing quality of life of city community. In the context of architecture and urban design, sustainable architecture can be achieved if cultural aspects and ecological aspects are synergized as two connected entities. The study aims to identify and to analyse the application of Malay traditional architecture elements in contemporary buildings design in Pekanbaru. The assessment is based on two variables which are cultural aspect that shows application of Malay traditional architecture character as regional identity and ecological aspect that reflects application of Malay traditional architecture elements to respond the climatic condition. This research use qualitative methodology to analyse form and character of the buildings in term of application of Malay traditional architecture elements, and quantitative methodology is used with descriptive analysis to analyse the level of application of Malay traditional architecture elements in different categories and analysis. The research identifies that majority of contemporary building design use Malay traditional architecture elements improperly according to the philosophy of Malay traditional culture. The application of Malay traditional architecture character tends to show regional identity in the building design compared to respond ecological considerations. This study also identifies the different result between government buildings and private buildings in the application of Malay traditional architecture elements. The findings indicate the inconsistency of government policy enforcement in building permission to preserve the identity of Malay culture for the improvement of quality of life in Pekanbaru. Keywords: Malay traditional architecture elements, regional identity, sustainable city

Abstract

The impacts of environmental destructions were felt in Indonesia. The irregular weather patterns, extreme temperatures, as well as floods affected many vulnerable areas in the Country oftentimes. Great numbers of environmental as well as man-related disasters were recorded such as: 12 earthquakes & tsunamis (in 2009), 8 volcanic eruptions (in 2008), 631 floods & landslides (in 2009), and 340 typhoons (in 2009). In total 416 lives were killed and 7,444 houses damaged. And the increasing numbers of environmental disasters was observed. Further, poverty and weal legal enforcement caused deforestation and severe biodiversity loss. All these challenges required real solution with Indonesian Sustainable Architectural Design Framework, not only the “green rating”. And the objective of the research was to find Framework of Sustainable Architectural Design Strategy in Indonesia responding to social economic conditions and addressing these environmental challenges. The framework was urgently needed by Building Construction Sector especially by Indonesian Institute of Architects (IAI). And lastly, it should be sustained with the active participation of all stakeholdersKeywords: Indonesian Sustainable Architectural Design, Environmental Challenges in Indonesia

Abstract

Vernacular architecture is not simply determined externally by the natural forces of its physical context. The poetic expression of Batak Toba house must have involved creative imagination in the mind of the people that may reflect the structure of mental models that constitute the thinking. This paper is intended to explore the presence of “generative concepts” of building’s form and its architecture, which is based on the figuration of relationship between man and the nature. Three Batak Toba settlements in Samosir island are selected for the analysis of the archetypes in Batak architecture in the attempt to understand the existential basis of architecture. Keywords: archetype, anthropomorphic, house on stilts, Batak Toba

Abstract

Urban kampung is body and soul of Indonesia urban structure and life. It has vital roles for social, economy, and physical strategies, including a resilient city strategy. That is why kampung oriented development (KOD) would be inevitably an underlying model to bring kampung towards sustainable urban development. As an investigation step, it is important to assess their environmental performance conditions, using popular and leading sustainable building and assessment tools to measure the conditions of existing urban kampungs. (Comprehensive Assessment System for Building Environmental Efficiency for Urban Development)and LEED-ND (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development) are chosen and applied to critically observe the kampung environment conditions comprehensively. Results showed in average that the urban kampungs in term of environmental performance based on both CASBEE-UD and LEED-ND category are still quite far from the ideal criteria. These results significantly steer a road map of strategies related to kampung oriented development (KOD).Keywords: compactness, kampung oriented development, CASBEE-UD, LEED-ND

Abstract

Tourism is one of the biggest income generators especially for developing countries. Regarding tourism facilities, most people at tourism areas extend their houses as a home stay, a restaurant, an art shop, salons, and other facilities. Without properly manage, that will have severe impacts upon local communities and environment. The housing extensions phenomena as tourism facilities and sustainable issue in tourism areas occur at some rural areas in the world including Indonesia and Bali, especially Ubud Village. These house extensions are often designed with adoption of tourism standard, for example, the people tend to adopt the new technology such as using air conditional to anticipate the increase of local temperature (as the effect of climate change). In order to overcome the ecological problem and energy, they use modern building material such as aluminum, plastic, asbestos, etc. That building are often designed by less taking local characteristic of tropical environment. Consequently, the cost was excessively high and the impact on the environment was negative. The objective of this study is to know how application of Balinese architecture in tourism facilities at Ubud Village. In order to achieve this objective, this research uses stratified random sample survey strategy, and case studies. The result of research shows that generally the tourism facilities at Ubud Village has been far away use Balinese architecture principle like ventilation, material, ornament landscape etc. On the other hand, many facilities use air conditioning and other equipments to find comfortable in the room. That is wasteful of energy and unfriendly to environment. The solutions suggested in this research are the use of sun shading to control of sunlight both vertical and horizontal shading to decrease use of air conditional; the arrangement of the buildings, the attention on environment , the use of material etc. Keywords: extension housing, energy, sustainable
