Abstract

This study examines the spatial organization and architectural patterns of setra (Balinese cemeteries) in Banjar Village, Buleleng, Bali, focusing on Setra Alit and Setra Bujangga as representations of dadia-based sacred spaces. Despite their significance in Balinese vernacular architecture, the spatial logic of setra remains underexplored. The rapid growth of dadia populations, particularly Dadia Arya Kenceng with more than 300 households, has created a mismatch between the existing cemetery capacity and the spatial requirements of Pitra Yadnya funeral rituals. The study employed a design-based qualitative approach through field observation, site measurement, semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussions with customary leaders and dadia representatives. The data were analysed thematically to formulate spatial patterns and zoning recommendations for four setra typologies: Setra Gede/Dewa, Setra Ida Bagus/Ksatria/Arya/Bujangga, Setra Alit, and Setra Bayi. The findings reveal a consistent spatial pattern characterised by tripartite zoning, kaja–kelod orientation, clustered supporting facilities, and ergonomically designed ceremonial pavilions (bale upacara). The study establishes setra as an important typology of Balinese vernacular architecture and proposes a spatial framework integrating the principles of Tri Hita Karana, capacity planning, and ergonomics.

Abstract

Accelerated urbanization and socio-spatial shifts threaten the multi-ethnic morphology of historic coastal cities in northern Java. This study examines the courtyard typology in the Old Town of Gresik, Indonesia's oldest port and Islamic center influenced by Arab, Chinese, Javanese, and colonial cultures. Utilizing a typomorphological approach with exploratory-explanatory methods, this research employs mapping, multi-scale morphological analysis (micro, meso, macro), and ethnographic observations. The findings indicate that the courtyard concept establishes a hierarchical spatial system integrating domestic, communal, and urban realms, driven by trade, industry, Islamic culture, and climate adaptation. At the microscale, residential courtyards function as gender-based domestic-economic spaces. At the meso-scale, streetscapes operate as “collective courtyards,” while at the macro-scale, the alun-alun (town square) and the Jamik Mosque precinct manifest as “urban courtyards.” This study reconceptualizes courtyards as interconnected multi-scale spatial systems, extending typomorphological research into socio-spatial dimensions for the contextual preservation of historic North Java coastal cities.

Abstract

This study examines the spatial-institutional configurations of community-based production cooperatives in two dense urban kampungs, Kampung Penjahit (Denpasar) and Kampung Lontong (Surabaya), and their implications for architectural and urban design discourse. A comparative qualitative–quantitative case study was conducted, integrating non-participant observation, in-depth interviews, 1–5 scale perception questionnaires, settlement morphology mapping, and dwelling typological diagramming. Qualitative data were thematically coded in NVivo 15, while perception data were analysed using the Kruskal–Wallis test in SPSS. Findings reveal two contrasting configurations. Kampung Lontong displays a cooperative-mediated model characterised by compact-clustered morphology, with the cooperative functioning as an institutional-spatial anchor, an alley network operating as a production corridor, and productive social capital. Kampung Penjahit displays an individuated production model marked by linear-dispersed morphology, autonomous dwelling-as-workshop units, and a religious association performing only a symbolic role; nevertheless, residents exhibit higher work discipline and superior arterial-road and parking access. The spatial-institutional configuration framework serves as a typological example for the design of inclusive productive villages in dense Southeast Asian cities.

Abstract

This study analyzes the reinterpretation of vernacular architecture as a sustainability strategy at La Cove Beach Resto & Bar on Lasiana Beach, Kupang City. The research focuses on the use of bamboo as the primary material, the application of passive coastal climate strategies, and the transformation of local cultural symbols into contemporary architectural forms. The method used is descriptive-qualitative with a case study approach through field observations, in-depth interviews, visual documentation, and a literature review. The findings reveal that La Cove employs a five-layer bamboo roof system that functions as thermal insulation, as well as hybrid bamboo-concrete columns that enhance structural capacity and resilience to the coastal environment. Furthermore, the reinterpretation of the “Bula Molik” from Rote culture demonstrates that local identity is not merely presented symbolically but also contributes to the building’s functional performance, particularly regarding rainwater runoff and shading. The research findings affirm that vernacular architecture can be productively reinterpreted within large-scale commercial typologies, offering design references for the development of sustainable coastal tourism in Eastern Indonesia.

Abstract

Post-disaster housing is typically designed to meet immediate shelter needs, yet it often overlooks environmental adaptability, cultural continuity, and psychological recovery. This study proposes a multi-criteria framework by integrating principles of vernacular architecture and healing environments. A mixed-method approach was used, combining literature synthesis, criteria formulation, expert validation, and TOPSIS-based prioritization. Eight design criteria were assessed: ventilation, natural lighting, transitional spaces, building materials, cultural relevance, flexibility and resilience, sustainability, and psychological support. Expert judgment evaluated each criterion across two dimensions—vernacular and healing principles—followed by normalization, weighting, and ranking using TOPSIS.  The results indicate that building materials achieved the highest performance score (Pi = 0.504), followed closely by transitional spaces (0.496), cultural relevance (0.495), and psychological support (0.491). However, the minimal variation between scores suggests that these criteria should not be treated as a strict hierarchy, but rather as an integrated design system. This framework offers a practical basis for developing post-disaster housing that is not only functional but also environmentally responsive, culturally sensitive, and supportive of occupant well-being.

Abstract

Medicinal trees are closely linked to the health system and Malay cultural heritage in Riau. However, the use of medicinal trees in urban green spaces remains limited, while urban landscapes are increasingly dominated by ornamental species that inadequately represent local ecological and cultural identity. This study aims to identify Malay medicinal tree species and formulate a conservation strategy based on biocultural resilience. The methods used were a literature review, an ethnobotanical survey, and multi-criteria analysis (MCDA). A total of 41 medicinal tree species were identified, including woody, fruit, and palm species. There are 6 priority species based on MCDA results: Artocarpus integer, Azadirachta indica, Cocos nucifera, Ficus sundaica, Ficus variegata, and Lagerstroemia indica. The Riau Urban Biocultural Landscape Framework integrates cultural values, ecological resilience, multifunctional landscape services, and urban identity as the basis for medicinal plant conservation and sustainable green infrastructure development.

Abstract

The loss of historic buildings due to urban transformation and limited documentation poses a major challenge for heritage conservation, particularly in architectural reconstruction and long-term sustainability. This study develops a visual-based reconstruction approach for data-limited conditions through a case study of the former Deli Sultanate Assembly Building in Medan. Using a qualitative Design-Based Research approach, the study integrates photographic evidence, morphological analysis, typological inference, and proportional estimation into an uncertainty-controlled reconstruction model to minimize speculative interpretation. The findings demonstrate that a high level of interpretive reliability can be achieved through systematic visual analysis and typological validation. The integration of adaptive reuse and contextual interventions enables the reconstructed building to function as a sustainable cultural and tourism center. The study proposes an integrated framework that links architectural reconstruction, functional adaptation, and contextual design, thereby bridging the gap between reconstruction and sustainability. Its novelty lies in integrating uncertainty-controlled reconstruction with adaptive reuse into a single, replicable workflow that has not been explicitly developed in the existing heritage conservation literature.

Abstract

This study examines the feasibility of converting office buildings into residential units in Jakarta's Central Business District (CBD), responding to rising office vacancy rates and growing demand for inner-city housing. Using an exploratory qualitative approach grounded in grounded theory, the study analyzes seven case studies through document review and semi-structured interviews with architects, developers, and urban planners. The research covers technical, regulatory, and socio-spatial variables. Findings reveal that conversion feasibility is constrained by structural limitations such as rigid floor configurations, outdated utilities, and high retrofit costs, alongside regulatory barriers including inflexible zoning and complex permitting processes. Socio-spatial factors — community resistance and user expectations — also shape project outcomes. On the other hand, buildings near mass transit with adaptable structural systems show considerably higher conversion potential. The study argues that technical readiness alone is insufficient. Sustainable adaptive reuse requires supportive policy frameworks, integrated governance, and well-targeted incentives to move beyond case-by-case conversions toward a scalable urban strategy.
