Abstract

This research work focused on analysis of cost and returns in rice production by USAID-MARKETS II project participants and non-participants in Ebonyi state, Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling procedure was employed to select 239 participants, and 252 non- participants for the study. Data were collected from primary source, and analyzed using Z statistic, Net Farm Income (NFI) and Returns Per Naira Invested (RNI). The result reveals that the Net Farm Income (NFI) obtained by USAID-MARKETS II project participants, and non-participants were N493, 067.55/ha, and N353, 408. 12/ha respectively while the return on investment obtained by them were N3.28k, and N3.05k respectively. There was a significant difference between the profits obtained by them. Therefore, this study recommended that the teaming unemployed Nigerian youth should be encourage by the government, and international agencies through provision of grant/loan to take up rice farming as a business.

Abstract

Sidenreng Rappang Regency is one of the rice providers in South Sulawesi Province in supporting food self-sufficiency in Indonesia. However, there are several problems faced by farmers in Sidenreng Rappang Regency, namely farmers have not been able to optimize their production results due to limited information in determining selling prices, while through a partnership pattern it makes it easier for farmers to obtain information about marketing and other problems, namely the length of distribution channels experienced by farmers. causing the selling price of rice to be classified as very low. The purpose of this research is to identify or study the partnership patterns and distribution channels that have been carried out by rice farmers in Sidenreng Rappang Regency. This research was conducted in Sidenreng Rappang Regency which took place in May-August 2020. The method used was observation and interviews involving 10 rice farmer respondents, then the data were analyzed to determine the implementation of the partnership pattern in the form of a descriptive method and to detect the distribution pattern of rice commodities. Based on the results of the research, the partnership pattern in the rice distribution channel in Sidenreng Rappang Regency is included in the category of general trading patterns, namely by marketing unhulled grain products to rice milling companies through intermediary traders. The implementation of the rice distribution channel system begins with farmers - collectors - rice milling companies, then distributed to two business actors, namely large companies and retailers to the final level to consumers.

Abstract

Certification is an instrument to add value to a product, and it addresses a growing worldwide demand for healthier and more socially and environmentally friendly products. Globally, coffee certification has received strong recognition as it is proved to increase smallholder farmers’ access to input and output markets, production, productivity and income. This study investigates the major determinants of coffee certification participation. It also analyzes the welfare gains of participation in the certification schemes by smallholder coffee growers. Both primary and secondary data were used. Primary data were collected from randomly selected 247 coffee producers. Structured questionnaires, focus group discussions and key informant interviews were employed to collect the primary data. Descriptive statistics and econometric models were used for data analysis. Probit model was used to identify factors affecting participation in coffee certification schemes. Propensity score matching technique was used to estimate the impact of coffee certification participation on smallholders’ annual revenue from coffee production. The probit model result revealed that access to training, family size, land size owned, experience in coffee production, education status were significantly determined the smallholders farmers’ participation decision in coffee certification. The propensity score matching model result also shows that participation in coffee certification significantly (p=0.001) improved farmers’ annual revenue by 2,902 Ethiopian birr compared to selling coffee without the certification schemes. This income impact is mainly attributed to the premium price the certification offer to farmers for high quality coffee. Therefore, policies or projects related to coffee value chains should target improving farmers’ access to training, boosting the access to education, working on farmers’ productivity and increasing their technical knowhow on coffee certification to increase farmers’ participation in coffee certification and to improve their annual revenue earning level in the study area.

Abstract

Market integration is one indicator of marketing efficiency, especially price efficiency, which is a measure that shows the extent to which price changes that occur in the reference market will cause changes that occur in market followers. The difference in prices received by farmers, wholesalers, and retailers in Indonesia in 2011-2015 has increased and decreased by an unequal amount, which means that price changes among marketing agents are not balanced. Agribusiness market participants currently do not use market communication information system services on time so that it will cause information asymmetry and indicate that the market is not integrated. This study analyzes market integration based on the relationship between corn prices at the level of producers, wholesalers, and retailers. The analytical methods used are Engle-Granger cointegration, Error Corection Model (ECM), and Granger Causality Test. The results show that the corn market between producers and wholesalers, between wholesalers and retailers, and between producers and retailers has been integrated in the long and short term. Market information needs to be improved so that market integration is stronger.

Abstract

The study determined the factors influencing simultaneously household and marketed surplus-led fish production in Nigeria’s Kogi State using cross-sectional data collected from 105 fish farmers. The sample size was achieved using a multi-stage sampling technique and the collected data were elicited viz. structured questionnaire complemented with interview schedule. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to achieve the conceptualized objectives. Empirical evidences showed that marketed surplus-led fish production was affected by less risky non-farm incomes with high income turnover and capital paucity. However, marketable surplus-led production was enhanced by enlarged income, readily available demand that matches the supply and entrepreneurship zeal among the youthful population in the studied area. In view of the foregoing, the research recommends the need to strengthen the value chain of fish marketing so as to contain any challenge viz. market imperfection which in the long-run will jeopardize market-orientation of fish farming which is nascent among most of the farmers in the studied area. In addition, there is need to address gender inequality in order to arrest poverty vulnerability among women folk viz. budget gender mainstreaming so as to achieve growth and development which are pre-requisite for globalization.

Abstract

The agricultural sector needs to make breakthroughs in the design of production systems to improve farmers' income and operation efficiency. One of the ways is to redesign rice production methods by applying a rice-fish farming system. Lamongan has a different system that combines rice cultivation with vannamei shrimp. Due to the limitation of farmers, the efficiency of the system has not yet reached the optimal level. This study describes the rice-fish farming system, identifies the SWOT and generated the grand strategy matrix, and analyzed the profit efficiency using Stochastic Frontier Analysis. The results showed that the strengths and opportunities are more influential, where the position was in the quadrant I; which means it is in a good strategic position. Meanwhile, the input factors which significantly influence profit where the cost of paddy seed, the cost of organic fertilizer, the cost of inorganic fertilizer, the cost of pesticide, and the cost of shrimp feed. The profit efficiency analysis shows that respondents engaged in this system did not efficiently allocate inputs and production cost factors appropriately. The average profit efficiency level was 78.05 percent; it means that there were still opportunities to increase profits from the system by 21.5 percent.

Abstract

Food is a basic need that must be fulfilled by every citizen / community and is the right of every resident to fulfill his food needs. So it is natural that many countries whose governments give considerable attention to food-related problems both in terms of demand and supply. Research on demand for food commodities in Tulungagung Regency uses data from SUSENAS (National Socio-Economic Survey) in 2018 obtained from the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics. The model used in this study is the AIDS (Almost Ideal Demand System) model with the SUR (Seemingly Unrelated Regression) method. The results showed that the factors that influenced the demand for food commodities were rice prices, corn prices, soybean prices, mungbean prices, peanut prices for cassava prices, sweet potato prices, and total household expenditure. Price elasticity is elastic for food commodities (rice, corn, green beans, peanuts, cassava and sweet potatoes). Cross elasticity has a substitution relationship in each commodity and is also complementary in each commodity. Expenditure elasticity shows that all food commodities are normal goods.

Abstract

The need to diversify the Nigerian economy calls for value chain development of the agricultural and livestock sector. The main purpose of the study is to seek additional source of income for poultry producers through the processing of selected poultry by-products in the study area. A baseline study of poultry enterprises was carried out in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria using a purposive sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was used in the collection of data and data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics, gross margin analysis and Logit regression. The result showed and exhibited a gross margin ratio of 82.9% indicating profitability of enterprise. The regression result revealed that the adoption of poultry by-products processing was by different factors at different level of significance in organic fertilizer was influence. The study revealed that the respondents ranked high cost of machineries (25%) as the major problem encountered by them. It was recommended that awareness should be intensified on management poultry by-products; encouragement of Public-Private Partnership (PPP), towards the provision of adequate infrastructure need for commercialization of poultry by-products processing in Nigeria.

Abstract

Organizational commitment is the willingness of someone who is in an organization to obey, respect and live the values set by the organization, and the main purpose of organizational commitment is to foster a loyal attitude to the organization. This study aims to empirically reveal the influence of organizational culture, employee empowerment and job satisfaction on organizational commitment with the object of employee research at CV. Tirta Usaha Bogor and a total sample of 140 respondents using path analysis. CV. Tirta Usaha Bogor is a distribution company for bottled water products with Aqua and Vit brands. The results show that organizational culture directly affects organizational commitment with a coefficient of 0.31, employee empowerment directly affects organizational commitment with a coefficient of 0.32, and job decision directly affects organizational commitment with a coefficient of 0.19. Commitment to the organization that occurs at CV. Tirta Usaha Bogor is currently strong enough, even with the conditions of organizational culture, empowerment and job satisfaction that are in the good enough category can create commitment to the organization that is good enough to good. If things related to organizational culture, employee empowerment and job satisfaction can be improved, it will create a strong commitment to the organization in each employee.
