Abstract

Hyperglycemia has been proven to increase oxidative stress due to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that exceed the capabilities of the natural antioxidant defenses, causing a deficiency in insulin receptors and insulin resistance. In this study, the effect of propolis on ROS was observed. Fifty five (55) male mice (Mus musculus SW.) were divided into 5 groups, i.e. KN (normal control), KDM (diabetes control), and P1, P2, P3. Propolis solution 50, 100 and 175 mg/kg bw was given to groups P1, P2 and P3 respectively, while distilled water was given to groups KN and KDM by oral gavage for 21 days. Density of ROS was measured every 7 days, while measurement of plasma insulin was carried out every 3 days. The results show that the density of ROS in the groups treated with propolis was lower than in the KDM group. However, the plasma insulin levels in the propolis groups were higher than in the KDM group. It was concluded that propolis can decrease ROS density and causes an increase in plasma insulin levels.

Abstract

In this paper, a system of non nonlinear differential equations withimpulse effect at fixed time moments is considered and criteria for retention ofuniform eventual stability of its perturbed impulsive differential systems undervanishing perturbations are established. Abstract

The wireless sensor network (WSN) is an attractive technology, which combines embedded systems and communication networks making them more efficient and effective. Currently, WSNs have been developed for various monitoring applications. In this research, a wireless mesh network for a pipeline monitoring system was designed and developed. Sensor nodes were placed at each branch in the pipe system. Some router fails were simulated and the response of each node in the network was evaluated. Three different scenarios were examined to test the data transmission performance. The results proved that the wireless mesh network was reliable and robust. The system is able to perform link reconfiguration, automatic routing and safe data transmission from the beginning node to the end node.

Abstract

This paper discusses the structure of Orlicz spaces and weak Orliczspaces on ℝn. We obtain some necessary and sufficient conditions for the inclusion property of these spaces. One of the keys is to compute the norm of the characteristic functions of the balls in ℝn.

Abstract

One of the most economical approaches for removal of toxic compounds is bioremediation. In the long term, bioremediation is economic and feasible compared to other methods, such as physical or chemical methods. A bacterium that can efficiently reduce molybdenum blue was isolated from polluted soil. Biochemical analysis revealed the identity of the bacterium as Enterobacter sp. strain Saw-1. The growth parameters for optimal reduction of molybdenum to Mo-blue or molybdenum blue, a less toxic product, were determined around pH 6.0 to 6.5 and in the range of 30 to 37 ℃, respectively. Glucose was selected as preferred carbon source, followed by sucrose, maltose, l-rhamnose, cellobiose, melibiose, raffinose, d-mannose, lactose, glycerol, d-adonitol, d-mannitol, l-arabinose and mucate. Phosphate and molybdate were critically required at 5.0 mM and 10 mM, respectively. The scanning absorption spectrum acquired to detect the development of complex Mo-blue showed similarity to previously isolated Mo-reducing bacteria. In addition, the spectrum closely resembled the molybdenum blue from the phosphate determination method. Heavy metals, including mercury, copper (II) and silver (I), inhibited reduction. Moreover, the bacterium also showed capability of exploiting the pesticide coumaphos as an alternative carbon source for growth. As the bacterium proved its ability to detoxify organic and inorganic xenobiotics, the usefulness of this microorganism for bioremediation is highlighted.

Abstract

Indigo leaves (Indigofera tinctoria L.) are utilized as a source of batik dye in Java and Madura islands, Indonesia. Batik makers from the islands collect indigo leaves from wild plants. Continuous collection of wild plants from their natural habitat may decrease their diversity. The present research was conducted to analyze the genetic diversity and population structure of I. tinctoria L. from Java and Madura. 55 indigo accessions were collected from 10 locations in Java and Madura. The indigo DNA was extracted and amplified using 15 ISSR primers. A total of 123 bands showed 50-90% polymorphic loci. PCA and UPGMA were used to analyze the data. All indigo accessions were clustered into 4 groups at a 60% similarity coefficient: a group consisting of Madura accessions, a group consisting of East Java accessions, a group consisting of Central Java accessions, and a group consisting of West Java accessions. Accessions collected from the same or adjacent populations tended to show similar ISSR characteristics. The genetic diversity of indigo in Java and Madura islands is relatively high (%P = 68.3), but the diversity residing within each population is lower (37%) than that between populations (63%).

Abstract

In this study a generalization of the Riesz representation theorem on non-degenerate bilinear spaces, particularly on spaces of truncated Laurent series, was developed. It was shown that any linear functional on a non-degenerate bilinear space is representable by a unique element of the space if and only if its kernel is closed. Moreover an explicit equivalent condition can be identified for the closedness property of the kernel when the bilinear space is a space of truncated Laurent series.

Abstract

Outputs from a high-resolution ocean general circulation model (OGCM) for the period of 1990-2003 indicate an interannual modulation of intraseasonal Kelvin waves along the equatorial Indian Ocean. During normal conditions without IOD event, the first mode explains about 30-40% of the total variance in the western (60-65ºE) and central (75-80ºE) basin, while the second mode contributes up to 45% to the total variance in the central basin around the longitude of 82ºE. In contrast, during the 1997/98 IOD event, the fourth mode caused about 40% of the total variance in the central and eastern basin. During the 1994 IOD event, the contribution from the fourth baroclinic mode in the eastern basin caused 45% of the total variance. In the central basin, the second and the fourth baroclinic mode caused almost the same variance (~40%). The variations in the characteristics of the intraseasonal Kelvin waves are related to variations in the vertical stratification. During the IOD event, the pycnocline in the eastern basin was raised by about 50 m and the stratification at the upper level is strengthened, while it is weakened at lower levels. These changes lead to an increase in the contribution of higher-order baroclinic modes.

Abstract

A within-host mathematical model to describe the dynamics of target cells and viral load in early HIV-1 infection was developed, which incorporates a combination of RTI and PI treatments by using a pharmacokinetics model. The local stability of uninfected steady state for the model was determined using an alternative threshold. The pharmacokinetics model was employed to estimate drug efficacy in multiple drug dosing. The effect of periodic drug efficacy of pharmacokinetic type on outcome of HIV-1 infection was explored under various treatment interruptions. The effectiveness of treatment interruption was determined according to the time period of the drug holidays. The results showed that long drug holidays lead to therapy failure. Under interruption of treatments combining RTI and PI therapy, effectiveness of the treatment requires a short duration of the drug holiday.
