In Indonesia, the tourism business, international tourism in particular, had been proceeding since the beginning of the 20th century and was increasingly confirming its existence during the period of the 1970-ies up to the 1990-ies due to the government planned development policy at that time. The development had impacted considerably on various sectors related to the country’s culture, especially on the local people’s traditional art in tourists receiving areas. Particular tourist destination areas have experienced certain changes in the orientation of production, from meeting the needs of internal cultures to serving the demands of external tourism established markets. This paper discusses the development of motifs of a specific traditional cloth produced by the East Sumba people in the years 1900 – 2000. During the span of the respective 100 years, the visual appearance of the cloth, hinggi, had undergone changes due to external influences coming along with tourism. It transformed from its idealistic or traditional characteristics to having certain commercial attributes as shown by the morphology of its design or motifs. Besides, the cloth functions had also changed from a traditional object of textile to become a souvenir for use as an interior decoration element.

The main objective of the study is to explore the applicability of the choice experiment method to reveal preferences of visitors. The preferences are related to the attributes of eco-tourism resources in Taman Negara Malaysia. Four alternative sets of combinations of attributes which included types of accommodation, congestion levels, permitted length of stay per permit and entrance fees are given to visitors to choose. The results of the analysis on the probability of choice function reveal that types of accommodation, indicated by differences in room rates, and congestion levels are the two significant factors influencing visitors preferences for the eco-tourism resources. The choice of types of accommodation facilities can be implied to the preferences for quality services and facilities. On the other hand, the congestion level is associated with lower entrance fee and costs of visits.

This study was conducted to identify the characteristics of backpackers and their travel behaviours in China. Specifically, the study sought to explore backpackers’ expenditure patterns, activity preference and travel experience while traveling in China. A self-administered questionnaire was used in this study. The results were analysed based on 233 completed questionnaires distributed tobackpackers staying at youth hostels in Xi’an. The research findings confirmed other previous studies on backpackers. It was found that majority of the backpackers in this study were primarily young and European. The results also indicated that respondents are highly motivated by seeking such goals as self-development and novelty and preferred to participate culture-based travel activities. Although respondents were satisfied with travel experiences in China there was room for improvement. The major issues pointed out by respondents were low standard of hygiene and public toilets, unfriendly frontline service employees at restaurants and train stations, and booking train tickets. It is hoped that the findings of this study will contribute to developing promotional strategies for the backpacker market in China.

Ecotourism is an approach to tourism development to meet the sustainable development initiative globally. In order to meet the sustainability through resource appropriation a clear and well-knitted framework is very essential. The present study made a detailed investigation on destination management with reference to Thenmala Ecotourism Project, India’s first planned ecotourism. Further, it evaluates the competencies of institutional arrangements to meet the policy objectives of ecotourism through SWOT analysis of the destination. The study shows that the destination level framework is (a). Thenmala Ecotourism Promotion Society (TEPS) at the administrative level and (b) community based organizations like Eco Development Committees (EDC) under Forest Development Authority (FDA) and Self Help Groups (SHG) under Kudumbashree Programme at the operational level which have certain operational weakness leading to sustainability failures. Study further suggests for an integrated efforts to revitalize these grass root level institutions.

The study attempts to analyze the potential of developing a user fee system for the sustainable development of tourism in Sagada, Mountain Province, Philippines. Estimates of willingness to pay of tourists for nature’s services derived from a nonmarket valuation study provided the springboard for the range of user fees. Use allocation of potential revenue from user fee included education and awareness, improvement of facilities, waste minimization and clean-up, capacity building, and response to accidents and disasters. A council composed of various stakeholders was identified to be the institutional mechanism for developing, adopting and evaluating the operational policies as well as reviewing and approving programs and projects to be financed by the fund. Policy procedures and processes including information sharing and consultation, and the administrative arrangements for implementation and enforcement would best be conducted through this management authority to ensure that the environment and the community benefit the most.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of both economic and noneconomic factors on the domestic tourist flow to Khanh Hoa province in the long run and the short run by using the general-to-specific approach. The findings reveal that weather variables have a significant effect on the tourism demand in the short run and long run. Furthermore, a positive effect from the lagged dependent variable suggests that word-of-mouth recommendation to potential tourists provides good signs in term of the Khanh Hoa tourism industry. Also, the demand for Vietnamese tourists seems to be highly sensitive to tourism costs. Therefore, a small increase in consumer prices or transportation prices will result in a strong decline in the domestic tourism demand. Knowledge of effects of these variables on the domestic tourism demand is valuable to tourism operators in Khanh Hoa province.

Ecotourism success would depend on the community readiness to welcome and participate in tourism in terms of their attitudes towards tourism development, commitment, and capacity. These are related with expanding access to natural resources which are determined by the availability of local networks, collective actions, mutual trust, and social norms, which constitute social capital. Therefore, ecotourism as a tool of rural economic diversification requires social capital for its development. This study attempts to identify the relevance of social capital in empowering rural communities of West Java and enhancing conservation education for ecotourism development. The research was conducted in the Districts of Bogor, Sukabumi and Cianjur of West Java, Indonesia. The study employed a mixed method with predominantly qualitative approach to obtain data. Findings indicated that communities with higher social capital have higher potentials to induce ecotourism development through empowering community and minimize risks of environmental degradation through conservation education.
