One of the factors affecting tourism is the climatic conditions. It could become the attractiveness of tourism destinations, yet it can also interfere the performance of tourism in certain areas. In the last ten years, global climate have been changing, marked by changes in temperature, intensity and distribution of rainfall, wind speeds and patterns, etc. Climate change may impact tourism sector in various countries. One of the tourist destinations most vulnerable to climate change impacts is coastal tourism area. This paper discusses the phenomenon of climate change in Indonesia and the possible impact on coastal tourism from both, supply and demand sides. From the supply side, climate change could impact on coastal natural resource which has become the attraction of the coastal tourism, while from the demand side, climate change can affect the pattern of tourist visits to coastal tourism destinations. Although climate change and its impacts have not been felt by tourists and also managers of local tourism area, adaptation programs need to be proposed. Pangandaran beach tourism area, one of the leading and popular tourist destinations in West Java province, will be the focus of discussion in this paper.

Abstract

Souvenirs provide a tangible evidence of the travel experience. Souvenir purchase has been considered as an important component of tourism shopping. This has implications for tourism marketers and local artisans of regions that have a significant repertoire of traditional handicrafts/handloom products and may be regarded as craft-rich regions. The primary purpose of this study is to examine the souvenir purchase intentions of tourist segments to one such region - Northeast India. It aims to assess whether the intention to purchase souvenirs differs according to the type of tourist. The influence of travel motivations, activity preferences, demographics and certain trip-related factors on souvenir purchase intentions is examined. Using factor-cluster segmentation approach, three motive-based segments and three activity-based segments have been derived. Findings indicate that these segments differ with respect to purchase of souvenir. However, among the demographic and trip-related factors examined, only age and travel frequency are found to have an influence on intentions to purchase souvenirs. Tourism retailers of the region could benefit from such knowledge and may develop travel packages/ tour itineraries to cater to the interests of specific segments of tourists.

Abstract

Mass tourism is criticized because it jeopardizes environment, economic, socio-integrity of tourism destinations, and it can lead to impoverishment of local societies. Ecotourism emerges as an alternative of tourism which is more environmentally friendly and offers inclusion of social responsibility. This research aims to assess whether the ecotourism practices in disaster-prone conservation area fulfil the ideal ecotourism criteria and to explain the importance of governance in realising ecotourism practices. The result showed that ecotourism practices in the Merapi area are insufficient to fulfil ideal ecotourism criteria. It is found that quality of communication and collaboration, political views and character of planning (reactive or adaptive) determine the practice of ecotourism.

Abstract

The paper is concerned with the concept and characteristics of low cost airlines which are a well established sector in North American and European civil aviation industries, but a fairly recent phenomenon in South East Asia. Trends within the region are discussed with particular reference to the case of Singapore which has seen an expansion in low cost airline activity. Further growth seems possible and likely, although new entrants are shown to face both opportunities and problems. The Western business model appears to be applicable in a regional context, yet some modifications may be necessary to suit the different conditions in the market and those prevailing more widely.

Abstract

As a typical historic and touristic city of Japan, Kyoto City with a total of 14 UNESCO world heritage sites, and more than 2,000 shrines and temples, attracts annually about 50 million tourists from Japan and overseas. However, because of the disaster of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995 and the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 which both gave serious damage to Japan, the tourism sector of Kyoto City was impacted by the obvious decrease in the number of tourists. In this study focusing on the two disaster cases of Kyoto City, we estimated the amount of economic damage to the tourism sector, which consists of direct damage from decreasing tourism activities and indirect damage from influences on the regional economy caused by decreases in tourism consumption, which was estimated by the input-output analysis. Then from the analysis of decreasing tourists and estimation of the results, we considered factors whichhave impacted tourism activities and the regional economy.
