Abstract

Stakeholders in Indonesia have accepted sustainable tourism as the protection and the long use of tourism resources as well as the availability of the resources for current and the future generation. Although such concept has been recognised as a good notion for developing tourism destination, its implementation needs to be investigated. Since 1970s, Toraja has been promoted as one of the main tourism destinations of Indonesia. For this reason, Toraja was chosen as a location for qualitative fieldwork to investigate the conduct of sustainable tourism. This article provides insights about sustainability and sustainable tourism based on the perspective of indigenous people in Toraja. Participant observations and interviews to stakeholders in South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia (specifically in North Toraja and Toraja land) were utilised to obtain information about sustainable tourism. On the basis of traditional cultural practices, Torajanese believe that the way they practice culture is actually a sustainable way. The idea of sustainability links to sustainability tourism which is now being promoted by the levels of government in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper demonstrated Participatory Geospatial Approach (PGA) to collect data and to examine the potential of existing resources for ecotourism development planning in the Biger, Gobi-Altai province, Mongolia. It attracts visitors its natural health resort services and quiet relaxing environment that it is one of Mongolia’s tourism icons. Through participatory inventory approach, tourism geospatial database was established and mapped tourism resources. Evaluation analysis were examined the potentials of the resources and characteristics of the sites in spatial pattern for proposed development which to assist decision-makers. We investigated 27 potential resource sites which have high value of attraction diversity, poor level of accessibility, high activity of community’s participation, low capacity of supporting facilities and low level of environmental impacts. The research findings illustrate the local tourism geo-database yielded by alternative methods and also demonstrate their utility to local and regional planning managers to recognize areas with tourism development potential.

Abstract

Tourism has not yet been recognized as an industry in Bangladesh. There is a great dearth of studies to understand the significance of this sector to the nation. This study is a pioneer effort of its kind to evaluate the services of the Patenga Beach offered to its visitors. A total of 400 visitors were interviewed using a predesigned questionnaire. The study reveals that the maximum willingness to pay for entering into the beach without any reduction in the number of trips was BDT 475.69 inclusive of a beach entrance fee of BDT 100 (USD 1.25) per visitor. The study suggests that if the beach had well-planned facilities for the beach goers, they are willing to pay more for the development of the beach.

Abstract

Tourism is a development option that is pursued by the Philippines from the 1970s until present where it is a pillar of the country’s economy. Arrivals from foreign origins are increasing at double digit growth rates while domestic tourism continues to outpace international arrivals. Recent legislation on tourism during the past two years has continued to place importance on the industry as an engine of growth. However, such legislation should be viewed against the backdrop of local governance structures that includes processes on comprehensive land and water use planning. The country faces a lack of environmental planners (as urban and regional planners are formally called in the Philippines) where tourism planning is a sub-specialization. This paper describes and reviews the current state-of-art of tourism planning in the Philippines against this backdrop of governance, the planning profession and tourism legislation.

Abstract

Urban open spaces are important for improvement in urban living quality. Traditional research on open spaces mainly focuses on spatial forms and visual esthetics to analyze environmental quality, but lacks of adequate consideration regarding acoustic elements. In the field of the acoustic environment, people pay much attention to interior sound quality design and noise pollution. In order to provide a new viewpoint for urban design and to reinforce design methods, herein, the concept of soundscape was introduced. In this survey, the types and the features of lakefront soundscapes, as well as visitors’ spatial distribution were observed. 13 pairs of sound and image scenarios were presented to 112 subjects at a tourism city, Hangzhou, China. The sounds and images used were of real settings in lakefront scenic areas. Affective response was measured in terms of pleasure. Through the evaluation on the influence of the interaction between visual and acoustic stimuli on perception of the environment, it is proved that there is a need to identify places where the conservation of the sound environment is essential, due to the drastic impact of the loss of sound quality or its salient informational content on human appreciation, especially in theme spaces, and folk-custom landscapes. Moreover, the coherence between sound and image influences human preferences, since coherent combinations are rated higher than the mean of the component stimuli. As a result, the spatial partition of soundscape is also necessary with the movement of the visual images. Finally, some design guidelines regarding soundscape are proposed with the illustrations of four typical lakefront spots.

Abstract

The present research empirically investigates the preferences of the respondents currently residing in Malaysia towards the promotion of heritage destinations in Kuala Lumpur. The present study makes an attempt to identify the key determinant factors that are actually hindering the heritage destination promotion in Malaysian context. For the purpose of the research, the attractions in Kuala Lumpur are segmented as Heritage, Architectural, Natural and Amusement landmarks. Data has been collected from a self-administered questionnaire, returned by 100 survey participants. In accordance with thedestination competitiveness analysis and based on the preferences and attitudes expressed by the respondents towards these attractions, they are grouped as heritage and tourist destination travelers.Visitor profiles are developed depending upon their demographics such as age, income, education, occupation and marital status. Different heritage destination activities including visit to art galleries and museums, historical organizations and towns, cultural festivals etc., are studied in association with the heritage traveler site assessment. The awareness, visitation, interest, importance and satisfaction levels of the travelers to heritage sites are assessed in detail. Furthermore, motivations and barriers to visit heritage sites in conjunction with other prevailing attractions are examined. Apart from the above mentioned, respondents satisfaction, awareness and spending levels are measured with reference to the heritage travel attributes and amenities usage. Respondent’s intention and preference to visit as well as revisit heritage sites in comparison with other architectural, natural and amusement landmarks are explored. The importance of information sources in promotion of heritage destinations to the travelers is presented and managerial implications are discussed. Moreover, SWOT analysis thoroughly analyzes the current market situation for heritage destination promotion in Kuala Lumpur. Avenues for further research are presented.

Abstract

It has been more than a half decade that the very destructive tsunami hit Banda Aceh, the capital city of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province, located at the northern part of Sumatra Island. So far the urban planning and development in the city is focusing on reconstruction and rehabilitation, which can be absolutely understandable considering the devastating impact of tsunami at that time, however as the time passes by, a new intention has to be created to the conservation effort not only to uphold the value that Aceh once had, but also as an attraction to boost tourism. The paper argues that, despites some challenges in the interpretation and institution side, Puenayong would be the suitable place for conservation in Banda Aceh. Peunayong old shop-houses still retain the heritage architectural value. The long history of the area and the typical old Chinese architectural type of shop-houses make the area just the place for conservation. The regular maintenance by the owner such as painting, cleaning, and other efforts to protect old materials from decay have enabled this old shop-houses still stand at its architectural value today. As the economic value of the area is now increasing, reuse strategy could be used to maintain the character and the architectural value of the shop-houses and at the same time enhancing the environment quality of the site for tourist attraction.
