Abstract

Tourism research in Thailand is unbalanced, since it largely focuses on western travellers and pays very little attention to Asian tourists, especially mainland Chinese tourists, whose numbers and value are rising year-on-year. The connections between China and Thailand are many-stranded and more than a thousand years old. However, there is very little understanding of what kind of experience Chinese tourists would like to receive and whether they enjoy their visits. This paper reports on a quantitative survey of 250 Chinese tourists in Thailand which investigated the kinds of experience that they received and the degree to which they were satisfied with them. It was found that most travellers, although they no longer are subject to ‘zero-dollar tourism,’ nevertheless face constant appeals to buy often unwanted products and must accept very low levels of service. Satisfaction levels are, consequently, varied.

Abstract

The contribution of Japanese tourists to the total number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia has always been very significant. Tourism authorities as well as tourism related enterprises therefore are normally interested in finding the factors affecting Japanese demand for tourism in Indonesia. This study attempts to analyze factors that influence Japanese demand for tourism in Indonesia by utlizing an econometric modeling. The model that results from this analysis is then used to forecast the number of Japanese tourists visiting Indonesia in 2011- 2015. The most significant factor that affected the Japanese demand for tourism in Indonesia was Japan’s GDP.

Abstract

Asian Highway route No. 4, the only main national highway that links to the North South Economic corridor of the Greater Mekong Sub-region at Bangkok, is the gateway for East Asian countries to enter into the Thailand by land transport. Hence, the twin purposes of this paper are to a) appraise the present state of international tourist arrivals by land transport into Songkhla province of Thailand and to b) model the associated risk. Conditional mean and conditional volatility models from the ARCH family were adopted to illustrate the behavior of daily international tourist arrivals into the province. The parameters of the conditional mean and conditional volatility models are statistically significant and the Quasi Maximum Likelihood estimators are also valid and statistically consistent. The results show that almost 80% of those arrivals were from Malaysia and that short run risk is persistent. Negative asymmetric behavior is also observed in the daily international arrivals by land. The strategic implications of this empirical study envisage sufficient room for intervening or amending provincial tourism policy to better attract and stabilize Malaysian tourist arrivals and to promote tourism as a local business.

Abstract

Hotel industry is a form of an intense interaction between employee and consumer. When a hotel chooses to perform in a perfect manner, then every operational mistakes will be considered as a loss and lowered brand asset value in consumer’ mind. Therefore, it can be the most valuable asset of a company and it will not exist without a loyal and satisfied consumer who also respects the brand that is promoted by the company. In this case, a hotel can develop its market size and consumers’ growing rate by emphasizing best service to them. This approach surely gives more advantage than other marketing activities such as discount or promotion program. Besides, it costs cheaper to give a best service to hotel’s existing consumers than trying to get new ones. This article will explain further about the importance of a balance between marketing, operational, and brand asset value in hotel industry through hotel management.

Further, there are several issues and challenges of the sector. Small size of the farm lands, lack of necessary skills, poor level of product development, poor publicity and promotion are important factors. While low numbers of visitors, environmental pollution, infrastructure development, are the common challenges for all the operators, monopoly of tour operators and political influence are the challenges for some operators including farmers those who conduct agritourism. Abstract

For years, Bandung city has been known and popular as a tourist destination.Various tourist attraction and activities have been developed so that it has attracted visitors from various community groups. One of the attractives and potentials tourism activities which could be developed is a scientific tourism. Although this type of tourism was formally introduced recently, but actually this type of tourism has been known in Indonesia for a long time, especially by students. As an educational city, Bandung is very potential to be a scientific tourist destination, not only for domestic tourists but also for foreign tourists. Scientific tourism can be grouped into three, namely 1) the tourism activities where tourism senses are more dominant than scientific sense, 2) tourism activities where scientific senses are more dominant than tourism sense, and 3) tourism activities where tourism attractions are relatively in balance with scientific elements. Among these three types of scientific tourism, the second type of scientific tourism was most often found in Bandung. Actually, the common problems frequently experienced by scientific tourism attraction, especially on the third type of scientific tourism that highlight the scientific aspects, was relatively low in the number of visitors. This figure proved a relatively low level of interest for community towards scientific tourism. Therefore efforts needed to be carried out to improve the scientific tourism attractions, thereby increasing public enthusiasm for scientific tourism. Strategy which was needed to develop a sustainable scientific tourism consisted of Tourism Attractions Development, Promotion, Management, and Supporting Strategies

Abstract

Recent published information suggests that New Zealand's wine industry continues to grow rapidly. An activity related to the wine industry, wine tourism, is developing in wineries that provide cellar door sales, tasting rooms, restaurants, tours to their vineyards, and even accommodation. These developments demonstrate the potential of wine tourism as an alternative activity for travellers to rural areas, and as a business concept for wineries. However, still today research on wine tourism in New Zealand has been limited, including the way in which winery visitors are presented in the wine tourism literature. This paper reports the results of an exploratory study that investigated potential relationships between different winery visitor groups in New Zealand, including their commercial contribution in the form of winery expenditures. The results confirm significant differences among various visitor groups when comparing their age, income, or whether they are domestic or international. These findings could have significant implications for the wine and wine tourism industries.

Abstract

Indonesia is a multi-islands, multi-ethnics and multi-disasters country. Each etnic has a set of culture which is adapted into its environment, including in anticipating the pontential disaster around its area. The culture which is transmited or inherited from one generation to the next, has been proved its superiority, known as local wisdom. Local wisdom, in the form of life philosophy, attitude, and behavior guidance, will help the society to survive from various threats that distrupt their existance from natural disaster and life dynamics. Sundanese people, particularly in Kampung Naga Tasikmalaya, has a local wisdom which can protect their enviroment. This is very important in mitigating  disaster, such as landslide, drought, and polution. This society has been realized that disater will occured if their ennvironment is damaged. Local wisdom in disaster mitigation can be seen in the form of architecture, landuse zoning, land management for sustainable enviroment. This value of local wisdom is very important to be transmited and transformed to both domestic and international tourist through ecotourism. Ecotourism is known as sustainable tourism, green tourism, and edutourism because it has the vision of enviromental sustainable, activity without pollution, conservation, society empowerment, and appreciation for nature and society culture. The shift of tourism paradigm (from travel package and mass tourism to individual and small scale; from psikosentris to alosentris; from  foreign investment to own  society; and from European stypes to the natives) become a potential for Kampung Naga to be an ecotourism destination which has educational tourism. Besides, the potencies of Kampung Naga to be tourism destination also can be seen from strategic access from Bandung-Tasikmalaya-Pangandaran; openess in accepting the tourist; beautiful nature, various souvenirs, and tracking. Moreover, the approciation for Kampung Naga’s society in preserving their enviroment and mitigating disaster become the other visions of making Kampung Naga as education tourism destination

Abstract

This study is an attempt to investigate the tourism service quality in Malindi, Kenya. It is based on a fieldwork research carried out in October through December 2000. SERVQUAL model was used in generation of questionnaires which were the primary tools for data collection. The study results suggest that, the performance-based measures of service quality can be used to provide an index of the quality perceptions of a tourist destination’s service providers. It provides insightful and meaningful information about tourists’ perceptions of a particular service. This study, for instance, found that beach operators, informal micro-entrepreneurs, play an important role in the overall tourism service quality in Malindi.
