Abstract

Surabaya as Literacy City has been starting in National Education Day 2 May 2014 and also rising their features and facility like Public reading room, Library and Mobile Library. And we also Concern with some worst Realty about literacy System in Surabaya, such as had been Close some library in Shoping Center in Surabaya, like in Cito Mall, Royal Plaza and Kapas Krampung Plaza cause some problem in operasional System have causing other problem can disturb many achievement of Surabaya as Literacy City. We have should to continue it for another Public Reading Room in Surabaya can’t be like another Closed public reading room. And we must to minimalize it with Resources learning  through the efforts of reviewing public reading room of the service as an essential element in an information centre. In order to show better utilization of the future for the public after the assessment is the primary focus of our study was to determine the extent to which the services at the general public reading room so that the future can be used as a positive response for public reading room. The method used is quantitative approach with the method of data collection in the form of an explanatory through observation, literature, and the distribution of questionnaires to the respondents in all four public reading room in park city of Surabaya. Overall from 4 to place our study showed that the frequency of public perception in total into the bad category based on indicators of Vincent theory who leads a balanced way of internal and external factors. It shows that the public reading room services that already exist is still considered very less than the maximum and the indication of the need for an increase in the promotion, facilities and innovation program for the future.

Abstract

Today, the use of traditional reference desk in the academic libraries has been rarely used, thus expanding or even move to a virtual reference service. A minimum level of virtual reference services are provided in the academic library is currently in general is the electronic mail (e-mail). One of the academic library specifically provide virtual reference services via e-mail is a Petra Christian University (PCU) Library (ref-desk@petra.ac.id.). In such services librarians provide assistance to users in finding information and answer questions. This study aimed to analyze the transaction reference services virtually through e-mail at the PCU Library, with a view of the types of questions based on user background, the writing style of language communication interaction used based on user background, and cultural values are revealed behind the user in virtual reference services (e-mail). This study uses content analysis (content analysis) of the transcript e-mail received librarians of reference services began March 10 until June 16, 2015. The results showed that the types of questions asked in reference service virtual (e-mail) in the Library UK Petra include: specific search, access online resources, operation of online resources, policies and procedures for services, and library holdings with background the student (PCU and non-PCU), faculty, and librarians. Based on the background of users found that overall more types of questions asked in virtual reference services (e-mail) is a problem of access to online resources, and generally submitted by the students. Then, the writing style of the users language in interaction reference service virtual (e-mail) tends to be formal, which includes the word greeting, the message will be delivered, and regards cover, either by the student (PCU and non-PCU), lecturer, or librarians. While cultural values that revealed the background behind the user in virtual reference services (e-mail) is obedience, courtesy and politeness users.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the implementation of Knowledge Management by The United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The other goal of this study is to determine why USAID tries to develop KM. This study was done by using a literature review method with descriptive analyses. Data was collected by documents analyses. This result of the study shows that knowledge management (KM) has a strategic and vital position to the existence of USAID. USAID has been Able to run continuously through the KM division specifically created to carry out a series of policies that have been determined by the USAID. As a worldwide organization, USAID has been very worth implementing its own strategic system in an effort to reach every knowledge management of the latest and dynamic information so that it can be an organizations intellectual assets for sustainability in the era of globalization. Expected with the implementation of KM system will be Able to improve the performance of the organization so that it has a competitive advantage in the face of global competition.

Abstract

Issue of Big Data was already raised by Fremont Rider, an American Librarian from Westleyan University, in 1944. He predicted that the volume of American universities collection would reach 200 million copies in 2040. As a result, it brings to fore multiple issues such as big data users, storage capacity, and the need to have data analysts. In Indonesia, data analysts is still a rare profession, and therefore urgently needed. One of its distinctive tasks is to conduct visual analyses from various data resources and also to present the result visually as interesting knowledge. It becomes science enliven by interactive visualization. In response to the issue, librarians have already been equipped with basic information management. Yet, they can see the opportunity and improve themselves as data analysts. In developed countries, it is common that librarian are also regarded as data analysts. They enhance themselves with various skills required, such as cloud computing and smart computing. In the end librarian with data analysts competency are eloquent to extract and present complex data resources as interesting and discernible knowledge.

Abstract

This paper discusses about citation analisis as a tool that can be used in performing library collection evaluation. The discussion include source, scope and analysis parameter, literature character, and the analysis advantage of citation. Through this citation analysis, it can be known the growth and the development of science in certain subject. In citation analysis, it also can be described relation between parts or all documents cited with citing documents. So, it can be counted how many works cited by authors. For libraries, the result of citation analysis becomes consideration in making collection development policy. It is recommended that the library pays attention to the collection of the researches that are based on the citation analysis and uses them as collection evaluation tool. Other than that, the library should use the researches that are based on the citation analysis as the consideration in making the policy of collection development.

Abstract

Since published in 1976, no studies about the development of the theme or subject of the journal articles  published by Research and Development and Training Center Ministry of Religious Affairs, that are useful to see the development of science on  religious social fields. Based on that, the aim of this paper is to find out research trends in Islamic studies on journal articles published by Research and Development and Training Center Ministry of Religious Affairs in 2005 – 2014. This study uses analysis of co-words with exploratory quantitative approach. This approach explores areas that have not been studied previously. The whole issue of the journal article Research and Development and Training Agency Ministry of Religious Affairs, published in 2005 - 2014 are used as the unit of analysis in this study. The article studied consisted of 1,107 articles contained in four journals. The results showed Subject (descriptor) most appear on clustering over a span of 10 years (2005-2014) are the Islamic Education and Concord. This suggests that the study of Islamic Education and Concord almost throughout the year. Besides, this subject in accordance with the mission of Ministry of Religious Affairs and strategic plan of Research and Development and Training Agency. The distribution of other subjects such as Islamic Manuscripts, Religion, Inter-Religious Forum, Pornography, Jihad, Islamic Sects, Civil Society, Quran, Conflict, Muslim Scholar, Zakat are popular subjects that became a topic of research over a span of ten years. This subject does not always show up every year and the number of articles are smaller.

Abstract

Dewey Decimal Classification is a most popular classification system in the world because of its completeness and most up-to-date. There are many optional number in this classification system, although it rarely to be discussed even it is important to known well about that optional number, especially  for  a  librarian  as  classifier.  This  paper  is  a  literature  study  about  Dewey  Decimal Classification  Edition  23,  to  describe  about  optional  numbers,  particularly  the  number  in relationship with Indonesia’s subject and discipline. This paper is to avoid misunderstanding in interpreted about optional number among librarians, especially for who that does not understand well about optional numbers.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the development of reference services at the Library of Universitas Indonesia. The research discussed about innovation in the development of new activities in the reference services. Analyzing reference services from librarians’ point of view concerning the new activities in reference services, including attitudes and policies toward activities. This research takes a descriptive qualitative approach and uses semiotic analysis refering to Semiology of Roland Bathes concerning significance from two stage,  denotation and connotation, for analyzing the result of interviews. The results showed that the Universitas Indonesia Library reference service provides some new activities. Librarians become more active, revealed to be closer  to users, and transformation of information technology is seen as one of the competitive need to accompany the development of knowledge. Transfer media eventually have implications not on technology but rather to communication of reference services in the Universitas Indonesia Library.

Abstract

Changes are rapidly occur in this world, especially developments in the field of information and communication technology. Man must be able to adjust quickly to keep up. Developments in information and communication technology has made it easier for people in work. Utilization of information and communication technology are expected to make work performed by humans is more effective and efficient. National Library of Indonesia mandated by Law No. 43 of 2007 as an adviser to all types of libraries throughout Indonesia. In carrying out the task, the National Library should coordinate with local government including the provincial government, represented by the provincial library which can be said to represent the provincial government in the affairs of the library. National Library of Indonesia in coordination with the provincial library has been facilitated by information and communication technology such as telephone, fax and internet. In addition, coordination can also be done through conventional correspondency or direct face to face. This study tried to define which communication system that is commonly used by the National Library of Indonesia when coordinating with the provincial library and the reasons that lie behind them. The method used in this research is descriptive with a participatory approach, the researchers and respondents are equal and shared a mutual cooperation. This research indicates that face-to-face coordination is more preferred, because face-to-face coordination offers a social and economical benefit.

Abstract

The Information has not become knowledge until it has a value for the users, that is the reason we need knowledge management (KM) as the contents in digital library and institutional repository. Knowledge management (KM) refers to the tools, technologies, practices and cognitive.  Knowledge management (KM) is a capability that manages an organization’s knowledge, systematic processes for acquiring, organizing, sustaining, applying, sharing and renewing both tacit and explicit knowledge to enhance organizational performance and create a value. Digital library and institutional repository is a managed knowledge as a collection in digital format for knowledge information sharing. The objective of this paper is to explain web-based digital library and web-based institutional repository as a knowledge management to assist sharing knowledge information for supporting information literacy. The web-based consists of contents full text information, user friendly searching, and services. This study used web-based of digital library and institutional repository data by searching on internet and it is qualitative descriptive. The judgment is based on whether the contents are fully texted or not fully texted. The fully texted indicates that the contents can support sharing knowledge or the other way around. It shows that the content of digital library and institutional repository for encouraging is to develop information literacy skill. It can be viewed from digital library and institutional repository as an alternative study e-learning that collaborates between teachers, librarians, and people who are capable in knowledge management for supporting information literacy. It can be concluded that digital library and institutional repository must have information literacy
