Abstract

This study aims to find out the noun phrases which are missing from sentences by comparing the deep structure and surface structure in the English proverbs of John Ray’s book A Complete Collection of English Proverbs. In this research, the theory of Transformational Generative Grammar (TGG) proposed by Huddleston (1975) is applied. The data were collected with the observational method and note taking technique. In analyzing the data, the writer uses Phrase Structure Rules in revealing the constituents of the proverbs. Then, the Tree Diagram is applied in appearing the deep structure of the proverbs. After that, the writer uses Transformational Rules to observe the transformation of the deep structure into the surface structure. Furthermore, the data are presented by formal and informal ways (Sudaryanto, 1993).The writer finds two forms of noun phrase: partial and total noun phrases. The partial NPs often occur in the NP which are modified by adjectives. Meanwhile, total NPs are often occurred in the pronoun ‘you’. The selection of the NPs are based on several things, they are: because the sentence is an imperative sentence which requires the pronoun ‘you’ as the missing words, because the appearance of the pronoun in the proverbs that needs the missing words must be connected with the pronoun, and because of the verb in the proverbs which compels the missing words connected with the verb.Key words: transformational generative grammar, ellipsis, noun phrases

Abstract

This thesis is a semiotic analysis of a popular American cartoon comedy, South Park. Focusing on the first season of its airing, the study elaborates thirteen episodes of the series. The study is aimed to analyze the signs in the show and to describe the codes in which those signs are organized. The method in collecting the data is based on Berger’s concept of important sign and is analyzed with Chandler’s method of semiotic analysis, including the three-part model of codes. The study finds 21 important signs along with their meanings. In analyzing the data, the collected signs are analyzed by giving a brief explanation of the text as proposed by Chandler. Those sign is elaborated within Hjemslev’s order of signification to describe the message and value in two levels of meaning, denotation and connotation. After the main issues in the signs’ messages and values are collected, the analysis of codes is conducted by referring to those main issues. The study results in some sub-codes divided into three main codes. Social codes as the socio-cultural dimension of sign include social critique, human rights, as well as race and ethnic tolerance. Characterization and sarcastic humor are classified as textual codes, the textual medium in delivering messages and values. Social hypocrisy as the interpretative code reveals the general perspective in interpreting sign. Keywords: semiotics, sign, codes, South Park

In conducting this research, the writer uses the theory of intertextuality by Julia Kristeva, combined with the Ideology and Ideological State Apparatus theory by Louis Althusser. This research also proves that there are similarities in the main characters’ development in both novels. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is evidently influenced by Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. Abstract

Keywords: arketip, mitos, imaji, vampir

Abstract

This research is aimed to identify the computer terms and procedures used by the translator in translating the book Wireless Networking in the Developing World 2nd edition from English into Indonesian. In analyzing the data, the writer applies the theory proposed by Vinay and Dalbernet (in Hatim and Munday 2004:148). This theory divides translation method into two parts: (1) literal translation, and (2) oblique translation, with the seven procedures: (a) borrowing, (b) Calque, (c) literal translation, (d) transposition, (e) modulation, (f) equivalence and (g) adaptation. Having analyzed 31 data, the writer found that borrowing is the most dominant procedure used by the translator in translating the computer terms into the target language. Besides that, the translator also uses borrowing combined with transposition, calque and literal translation procedures in translating the computer terms. Keywords: translation, translation procedures, computer term

Abstract

This study discusses the types and meaning of onomatopoeias found in Garfield (2006) comic. In collecting the data, the writer used observational ethod and note taking technique (Sudaryanto, 1993). In analyzing the data, referential identity method (Sudaryanto, 1993) is applied. The types are analyzed by referring to Ullman’s (1962). The meanings are analyzed and strengthened by using the lexical meaning (Lyon, 1995) and contextual meaning (Ullmann, 1962) theories. The results show that there are two types of onomatopoeias found in the comic, the primary and secondary onomatopoeias. The primary onomatopoeia is the direct imitation of a sound produced by an object while secondary onomatopoeia comes from the sound combination produced by the specific characteristic of an object and its movement. In addition, the meanings of onomatopoeias derive from the lexical and contextual meanings. The lexical meaning refers to the dictionary meaning and the contextual refers to the context of an onomatopoeia in the comic line. From 15 data, the dominant type found is the secondary onomatopoeia.Key words: onomatopoeia, primary onomatopoeia, secondary onomatopoeia, lexical meaning, contextual meaning
