Abstract

Indonesia has various traditional foods, some of which are the result of acculturation with other countries’ foods. Sangga buwana is the Javanese-Dutch influenced cuisine, which became one of the favorite dishes of the sultans of Yogyakarta. Till date, the publication about sangga buwana is still limited. This paper aimed to introduce and spread the knowledge about sangga buwana as the result of food acculturation, focusing on its history, philosophy, how it is prepared, and its nutritional value. The study was carried out through interviews with the experts and literature review. Sangga buwana consists of several components, including choux pastry, ragout, lettuce, boiled egg, Javanese mustard, and pickled vegetables. Sangga buwana itself and every component to prepare it have the meaningful philosophy about God’s creations. It delivers important wishes and meanings to the newlywed couple in royal wedding ceremony. It was only served to the sultan, royal family of Yogyakarta, and their important guests. But nowadays, sangga buwana can be more easily found at restaurants, traditional markets or food festivals in Yogyakarta. The cultural preservation of sangga buwana has been conducted through cultural festivals, cooking workshops, and research development using local ingredients to prepare it which may support food diversification

Abstract

The current era of modernization has entered every line of human life, including the medical world. However, not all people can reach medical treatment even though the government has provided health service facilities. In line with this, traditional alternative medicine such as massage is still popular to cure ailments among the public. The author tries to raise the reasons why people prefer traditional medicine over medical treatment. This study used qualitative ethnographic methods with data collection techniques that are interviews and observations. The result of the research serves as documentation of cultural features in the health sector that is still developing in society. As an analytical technique, the author used James C. Young's health anthropology perspective. The data analyses used are data collection, data reduction, and data presentation in descriptions. This research showed that people prefer massage as a healing method for many reasons, such as having more affordable prices, being unprepared for the risk of medical treatment, feeling disappointment with medical treatment that does not work, and trusting in personalistic illness

Abstract

This study discussed the myths of elephants in the community of Balai Raja Village, Pinggir District, Bengkalis Regency. The elephant myths are the patterns of human-elephant relationships. Before the 1980s, the relationship between elephants and humans was very harmonious. After 1980, the forestry and oil palm industries caused between elephants and humans, which has been occurring until now. This study is categorized into qualitative research with an ethnographic design. Researchers stayed in the field for 2 months to explore information in depth through observation and in-depth interviews. The data was analyzed qualitatively and then written in this report. This study has found out that the conflict between elephants and humans is determined by human attitudes and behavior. The myth of the elephant is a symbol of efforts to conserve natural resources and a tool for compliance with societal norms and values. Elephants have protective properties and are very empathetic to babies. This study proposes that elephant mitigation can use a mythical approach by combining elephants’ and human’s habitation. This study contributes to the science of Anthropology, especially about the conservation of animals and nature. This study proposes that elephants should not be called pests, but a chain of human mutualism, where the elephants and humans live in harmony as a unified ecosystem.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the work of local institutions in overcoming the impact of the covid-19 outbreak and improving the economy of the community in Nagari Sungai Pinang. The concept of local institutions in this study is related to values, norms, and habits in society, both at the individual, community, and institutional levels. This study uses a qualitative approach, with data collection techniques being in-depth interviews, observation, and FGD. The data were analyzed with the principles of qualitative data analysis from Miles and Huberman. The results of the study were that local institutions related to values and norms worked when the corona outbreak came. The value of helping and working together seems to encourage people to solve their own problems. Meanwhile, the value related to institutions is the role of the Nagari Traditional Kerapanan, Bundo Kanduang, and Parik Paga Nagari institutions in overcoming the COVID-19 outbreak. These local institutions are active in improving the economy of the Sungai Pinang community in agriculture, fishing, and the tourism sector. The role played by these local institutions is to encourage community members to work together to help each other, and to apply the value of land use in the agriculture, tourism, and fishing sector

Abstract

This article aims to explain the role of dual agents in bringing about changes in agricultural practices.  Starting from the phenomenon of changing plant species that occurred in Parbotihan Village, Onan Ganjang District, Humbang Hasundutan Regency.  Changes in these types of crops often occur in a short period of time and are followed by most farmers.  These changes sometimes occur without considering the adequacy of land, cultivation knowledge, and capital capacity.  So, often the changes that occur are not profitable for them.  On the other hand, these changes also change the cultivation pattern which requires farmers to learn from the beginning as a consequence of changing the types of plants.  This research was conducted during the research period of my thesis by collecting data through observation and interviews. The selected informants are farmers who are involved in changing practices. The author found that the role of multiple agents such as relatives, friends, skippers, and group leaders with different capacities had a role in influencing farmers' actions. Multiple agents act as initiators, motivators, introductors, educators, and interventors. This research also shows that the social arena as public space becomes an effective arena in exchanging information and influences that encourage practice change.

Abstract

Vulnerability to the forest and land fires in the Tohor River began in 2007 and 2009 due to the construction of canals for village development as well as the canalization of sago companies, which are 5-7 meters wide. The purpose of the study identified potential resources for people's lives and peatland protection. Data collection using observations, interviews, and discussion forums. The results showed that the potential in the field of natural resources consists of plantations including sago, rubber, river fisheries, honey, and natural forest vegetation. In addition, the economic potential is also very large individuals and groups have implemented the management of sago derivative products such as sago sugar, sago noodles, sago rendang, sago amplang, and various handicrafts from sago such as rumbia roofs, bags and mats. In the field of human resources, there are LPMP village institutions, PKK and KKP, Environmentally Conscious Group, Tohor River Youth, Fish Farming Group, and community network including sago farming groups and youth associations. The productive age group is also quite large but they generally work a lot in Malaysia as contract workers. The potential of Natural Resources and Human Resources is important in people's lives especially to protect peat but the potential has not been developed to the maximum. Collaboration from stakeholders is required to develop optimally the potential available for better peat life and ecosystem

Abstract

The phenomenon of profanation of sacred traditions in the tourism industry is increasingly prevalent. Considering that matter, some steps should be taken to avoid the tradition of desacralization. This research was done by a field research approach to identifying the values of the traditional ceremony of Tengger, especially Yadnya Kasada, Yadnya Karo, and Unan-unan. This research was located in Tosari and Ngadiwana Village, Tosari, Pasuruan, East Java. The data was collected by unstructured and open-ended interviews. The results showed that their beliefs and obedience in conducting the ancestral teachings must be balanced through a deep and comprehensive understanding of traditional values. On the other hand, adaptation strategies must be carried out to stabilize themselves with modernization. These are done to preserve the existence of tradition without eliminating the essence of sacredness that has been attached to it. Therefore, one of the steps that can be taken is to separate the tradition from commodification without resisting the flow of modernization
