Abstract

An isolation of degrading bacteria of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) was conducted from May to October 2014 at the Laboratory of Microbiology, Department of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Andalas University. This study aimed to describe the characteristic of the bacteria which can degradate the POME. The result obtained five isolates ie BLS1, BLS2, BLS3, BLS4 and BLS5 and their characters were rod-shaped (basil), gram-positive, motile, positive catalase and forming endospores.                                                                                                        Keywords:       isolation, characterization, degrading bacteria, POME

Abstract

A study on the characterization of thermophilic bacteria in producing neutral protease enzyme has been conducted in the Laboratory of Microbiology, Biology Department, Andalas University from October 2013 to March 2014. The bacteria were isolated from a hot spring at Sungai Medang, Kerinci. Water samples  were collected purposively based on gradient temperature at the hot spring which ranged from 450C to 880C. Colony of the bacteria were inoculated using nutrient agar (NA). We obtained 10 isolates of neutral protease enzyme from the thermophilic bacteria with proteolytic index ranged from 0.27 to 3.89. The MIV-14 isolate has the highest proteolytic index which collected from 830C of the hot spring. Characterization of macroscopic, microscopic and biochemical tests were reported. Generally, the colonies have round shape, wavy edge, white, producing endospores and motile. Keywords: characterization, neutral protease, thermophilic bacteria.

Abstract

A study on the influence of abiotic factors in producing protease by bacterial isolates M1-23 was conducted from May 2013 to December 2013 in the  Laboratory of Microbiology, Department of  Biology, Andalas University, Padang. This study aimed to find optimal conditions by isolate M1-23 to produce protease. This study consists of two stages. First stage used to produce the best protease and the second used to increase enzim homogenity. The result showed that the highest enzyme activity was  at medium temperature 550 C and pH 7.5. The best homogenity was produced at 125 rpm of agitation process.

Abstract

A study on population dynamics of Calophyllum soulattri Burm and Swintonia schwenkii T.&B in Pinang-Pinang rain forest have been carried out from September 2012 to Februari 2013 by using descriptive method. Data were collected after 23 years of demographic data available. We found that the highest seedling mortality of Calophyllum soulattri was at the height class of 11-30 cm (9.4 %) and the lowest was at the height class of 71- 80 cm (3.4 %). The heighest seedling mortality of Swintonia schwenkii was  at the height class of 11-20 cm (10.3 %) and the lowest was at height class 51-60 cm (2.9 %). Relative height growth rate of Calophyllum soulattri seedling was at the height class of 21-30 cm (0.38 cm/cm/yr). Whereas relative height growth rate of Swintonia schwenkii seedling was at the height class of 31-40 cm (0.21 cm/cm/yr). Keywords: dynamics population, Calophyllum soulattri, Swintonia schwenkii, mortality, relative high growth rate.

Abstract

An inventory of ants from subfamily Formicinae at Lembah Anai Nature Reserve, West Sumatra was conducted from June to November 2013. Quadra Protocol methods were used to collect ant samples, i.e; hand collecting, honey bait trap, soil core sampling and leaf litter sifting along two 180 m transects. Those methods were applied at two different habitats (forest edge and forest interior). We found 163 individuals of Formicinae which belong to 23 species, 8 genera and 3 tribes. Each species was described based on morphological characteristics. Keywords: ants, Formicinae, identification, Lembah Anai Nature Reserve

Abstract

This experiment aimed to determine growth rate of farm swamp eel under various food supply. The experiment used Completely Random Design (CRD) with four treatments and three replications. The treatments were various food supply i.e: earthworms, snails, floating pellets and sinking pellets. The results showed that various foods gave significant difference on the growth rate of the eel in term of absolute weight, daily growth, food conversionand food efficiency. There were nosignificant difference on absolute length and survival rate of the eel. The highest value of the absolute weight and daily growth during 60 days feeding was found at feeding earthworm. The highest value of food efficiency and food conversion was found at feeding sinking pellets. Keyword: swamp eel, physiology, growth, food.

Abstract

The vegetation analysis of weed from Coffee Arabica (Coffea arabica L.) traditional farm in Balingka, Agam has been conducted from February to May 2014. The purpose of this study was to determine the composition and structure of weed on the farm. Vegetation was sampled systematically using square plot (1x1 m2) with a total 32 plots. The results found that composition of the weed in the farm were 11 families, 21 genera and 25 species. A total number of individuals were 3114. Borreria laevis dominated at the coffee farm with the highest SDR (Summed Dominance Ratio) (22.809%). Diversity index (H') of the weed in coffee farm was 2.04. Keywords: weed, Coffea arabica L., composition, structure

Abstract

A study on population and habitat of forest softshelled turtle (Dogania subplana: Reptilia: Trionychidae) has been conducted from January to March 2014. This study aimed to understand population abundance and to describe non-natural and natural habitats. Population abundances were found out through searching, counting and release methods. Habitats were described based on physic-chemical, potential food-resource and vegetation factors. The turtles were more abundance in non-natural habitat (33 individual of 640 m²) than natural habitat (5 individual of 5.100 m²). The turtles were abundance in sand and gravel streams of non-natural habitat and sand and rocky streams of natural habitat. The turtles prefered in slow streams (0-10 cm/s) and neutral pH (7.1-7.6).Keywords: population abundance, non-natural habitat, natural habitat, Dogania subplana.
