Abstract

In today's travel and tourism landscape, the role of travel agents has become increasingly complex as they are challenged to explore a variety of potential destinations. More specifically, the complicated task of planning itineraries that truly satisfy travellers puts travel agents in a crucial role, increasing the complexity of itinerary planning. This complexity is compounded not only by the multitude of possible destinations, but also by non-negotiable constraints such as cost and time. To address these challenges, the orienteering problem represents a fundamental mathematical model that provides a theoretical basis for understanding the nuanced difficulties faced by travel agents. This study ventures into a novel iteration of the orienteering problem, with a particular focus on optimizing travel satisfaction based on length of stay. A notable aspect of this variant is the inclusion of time and cost constraints in the route determination process. Using an integer programming model, the satisfaction scores for each location are described by a diminishing returns function linked to length of stay, while the costs associated with each location follow a linear function influenced by the same parameter. The application of this model is in a hypothetical scenario with 32 nodes, with the calculations facilitated by the FilMINT solver. A sensitivity analysis examines time and cost constraints and shows their decisive influence on the optimization of travel routes. The results of this research contribute significantly to a strategic framework and provide travel agencies with the opportunity to create itineraries that not only meet practical limits but, more importantly, increase traveller satisfaction.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the different effect from the two standing posture on lower limb fatigue and discomfort. Sixteen subjects (eight females and eight males), aged between 23-29 years, participated in the experiment. They performed a sorting task in front of a grading table by picking and placing objects for 90 minutes in two posture (1) standing and (2) standing using a footrest. Muscle activity was recorded with surface EMG through disposable electrodes. The result shows that standing for ninety minutes developed fatigue in lower limb muscles and back muscles that lead to low back pain. Standing using a footrest result proper posture for prolonged standing period and reduce force at the back. It also results less fatigue and reduce the %MVC of EMG. So, it is recommended to attach a footrest in standing workstation to reduce the fatigue and discomfort. Keywords:fatigue, posture, standing, lower limb, EMG

Abstract

The scheduling of electrical energy usage during Peak Load Period (PLP) is a complicated problem that has been faced by PT Semen Padang after Indonesian Power Company (PLN) implemented the demarcation regulation of electrical energy usage during PLP (6:00 – 10:00 p.m.) which may not exceed 44.100 kWH. This regulation forces Production Department of PT Semen Padang to arrange the “on (1) or off (0)” schedule for the Raw Mills and Cement Mills during PLP. A Raw Mill or Cement Mill can be switched-off if the specified criteria are satisfied. Those criteria refer to the achievement of daily production targets, silo content at PLP, and the requirement for particular Raw Mill or Cement Mill to be off during those 4 hours of PLP. Meanwhile, the constraints are related to the length of machining hours of Raw Mill, Kiln or Cement Mill before preventive maintenance takes place. To solve this problem, a scheduling model for Raw Mills and Cement Mills on-off during PLP is then developed using a linear programming approach. The decision variables are the “on-off” state of Raw Mills and Cement Mills during PLP, while the objective function is to minimize the penalty expense of energy used during PLP. The developed scheduling model has the ability to solve the problem of the “on-off” assignment for Raw Mills and Cement Mills from Indarung II to Indarung V. This scheduling model can decrease the penalty of electrical energy expense during PLP from Rp. 3.07 billion to Rp. 1.79 billion.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to identify the level of climate change awareness among small-medium scale entrepreneurs (SMEs) and to investigate its impact on future business orientation, with individual self-perception acting as a mediating variable. Addressing a significant gap in the literature, this research explores the reciprocal influence between SMEs and climate change—an area previously underexplored. Conducted in West Sumatra, Indonesia, this study employs a quantitative causal analysis approach using Structural Equation Modelling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) for robust analysis. The findings indicate that while awareness and self-perception of climate change among SMEs are low, they significantly influence potential changes in business orientation. The study reveals that although many SMEs possess a high level of educational attainment, this does not necessarily translate into heightened awareness or self-perception regarding climate change. This disconnect underscores the critical role of tailored educational initiatives and support systems to bridge the gap between knowledge and action. Additionally, the study finds that SMEs often prioritize immediate financial stability over long-term environmental sustainability, driven by the necessity to meet daily operational demands. These results underscore the urgent need for pre-emptive government policies to guide SMEs toward sustainable practices. Effective interventions should include financial incentives, technical assistance, and educational programs designed to enhance climate change awareness and capabilities among SMEs. Furthermore, this study contributes to the field of industrial engineering by identifying opportunities to optimize SME operations. By integrating environmental sustainability into business strategies, SMEs can enhance their resilience and competitiveness while contributing to broader environmental goals. This research advances the understanding of the dynamic interplay between SMEs and climate change, providing a foundation for future studies aimed at promoting sustainable industrial practices.

Abstract

In today's rapidly evolving industrial landscape, businesses are increasingly challenged to strike a balance between enhancing productivity and maintaining product quality. Company X, a renowned cement manufacturer in Indonesia, relies heavily on four key raw materials, among which clay is particularly crucial for the raw mix. Recent trends have shown a decrease in the Al2O3 composition of clay, necessitating adjustments in clay capacity to uphold quality standards. A thorough technical evaluation of the plant highlighted that a significant number of critical machines, totaling 17, were operating with mechanical availability below the desired threshold. Additionally, a utility analysis pinpointed a shortfall in meeting the required clay tonnage, leading to the identification of machines that would benefit from retrofitting. The financial implications of this initiative were substantial, with the initial investment for the upgrades and subsequent operational costs in the first year being considerable. Yet, this expenditure was offset by a notable profit in the first year post-retrofitting. Key financial metrics further underscored the project's viability: a highly favorable Net Present Value (NPV), an impressive Internal Rate of Return (IRR), a rapid Payback Period (PP), and a significant Profitability Index (PI). These parameters, derived from an exhaustive analysis, clearly support the strategic decision to invest in retrofitting the production machinery at Company X's cement plant, illustrating the project's feasibility and the prospective benefits of this investment.

Abstract

Scheduling is an important area of production planning and control. Scheduling is required to produce an existing job by allocating existing resources in the proper execution order. Production schedules arranged effectively and efficiently to maximize resources utility, minimize waiting and idle time and increase productivity. The flowshop batch scheduling model for one machine that takes inventory and quality cost into account has been developed by Indrapriyatna et al (2007a). However, the model yet effective in converting the results of batch size into integers. This study tried to resolve this problem by using a modification of Branch and Bound Algorithm approach.

Abstract

PT IB. Sumberdaya Development is one of LPG agent partners of PT Pertamina. This company is assigned to distribute 3 kg LPG. The LPG shipment is carried out from Monday to Saturday. The shipment goes to 66 depots using agent vehicle which are registered in PT Pertamina. From the preliminary study, there were problems which related to the long-distance shipment, and the limitation of transportation and capacity. In this research, the shipment routes of 3 kg LPG in PT IB is determined. Sumberdaya Development problems consist of the distance of the travel, the time of travel, and optimal transportation cost. Based on Clarke and Wright Savings Matrix algorithm, by considering the vehicle capacity, the distance can be minimized. The point of this algorithm is calculating the saving by measuring the available reduction of distance and time. It is done by linking the existing depots and making a route which is based on the largest saving value of the distance from the agent to the destination depot. Each route is optimized by WIN QSB software by using Branch and Bound method. A program to facilitate the determination of shipment routes by using PHP programming language is designed. The proposed route for the 3kg LPG shipment is 762.35km with 33.58% saving, and the proposed time is 2929 minutes with 15.27% saving. The shipment schedule is designed from Monday to Saturday day to Saturday with each of 7 routes. This is better than the actual route used by the company.
