Abstract

Amorphophallus titanum (Becc.) Becc. is a species of Aroid family that produces an attractive large-inflorescence. It is well known as one of the largest inflorescence producing species in the world. The plant is endemic to Sumatera Island and has long been considered as a threatened species. However, in 2002, the IUCN removed it from the Red List of Threatened Plants chiefly because of inadequate data regarding the existence of the species in nature. This present study was carried out in Bengkulu as a case study in attempt to provide information concerning the natural population and the potential threats towards the existence of A. titanum in Sumatera. The results of the observation are disccused thoroughly in this paper.

Abstract

Dioscorea tuber has many benefits, for example as food or as traditional medicine. The high carbohydrate and protein contents make this plant suitable as a food. However, the presence of crystal oxalate, that causes irritation is an disadvantage aspect on the development of this species. Both of wild and cultivated species will assure the gene flow which is important in efforts to improve the tuber quality should be examine further.  This research aimed to observe the biodiversity of Dioscorea in Bali and Lombok, to recognize the utilization and to reveal their nutrients (carbohydrate, protein and fat) and also the contents of calcium oxalate. The results showed that there are five Dioscorea spesies, namely  Dioscorea alata L. (ubi) (11 cultivars), Dioscorea esculenta (Lour.) Burkill (ubi aung), Dioscorea hispida Dennst. (gadung), Dioscorea bulbifera L. and Dioscorea pentaphylla L.   The highest carbohydrate content (87,42% ) is found in D. alata (ubi ungu cultivar) from Lombok,  while the highest protein content (5,05%.) is found in D. alata (ubi dadap cultivar) from Singaraja, Bali.  Furthermore, the highest percentage of fat content (0,85%) is found in D. bulbifera from Karangasem, Bali, whereas the high quantity of glaucomannan (44,52%.) id found in D. pentaphylla from Tabanan, Bali, while D. esculenta from Jembarana, Bali has the  highest calcium oxalate (0,57%), and D. alata (ubi injin cultivar) from Karangasem, Bali has the least calcium oxalate (0,18%).

Abstract

Morphological relationships analysis of Hoya species from Sumatra was carried out. The study was taken both from the living collections at Bogor Botanic Garden and the herbarium specimens at Herbarium Bogoriense. There are 25 Hoya species in Sumatra resulted from the total of 129 samples number. Cluster analysis was run by Clique of Phylip software based on morphological diagnostic characters. Five paraphiletic groups were resulted from the phylogenic analyses. The groups constructed from this analysis were tending to be identical with the Schlecters section classification.

Abstract

Indonesia possesses 386 plant species that are categorized as threatened. Dipterocarpaceae contributes the largest number, reaching 36.79 % of the total threatened plant species, followed by Myristicaceae (13.73 %) and Nepenthaceae (6.99%). Of these 386 threatened species, 29.27 % are critically endangered, 17.88% are endangered, and 52.85 % are vulnerable. Bogor Botanic Garden recently maintains 68 threathened plant species if Orchidaceae and Nepenthaceae members are not included on the list. Two species have been regarded as extinct, namely Dipterocarpus cinereus and Calamus spectabilis, while two other species are regarded as extinct in the wild (Mangifera casturi, and Mangifera rubropetala). This information can be useful for everyone for different purposes, especially for those who concern in the conservation of threatened plant species in Indonesia.

Abstract

Carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) emission from wetlands significantly contribute to climate change and global warming. The interaction between among vegetation type, various environmental factors, and management regimes such as grazing and mowing is considered important in the calculation of CO2 and CH4 gas flux for an ecosystem. In this study, vegetation composition, CH4 and CO2 flux, soil characteristics, air temperature and humidity from the brackish marsh and salt marsh wetland ecosystems on Terschelling Island in Northern Holland were measured. We aimed to investigate the relationship between vegetation composition, grazing, and mowing on CH4 and CO2 emission. The abundance and number of plant species were higher in brackish than in salt marsh. Grazing was found to influence species richness, 39 species being found in a grazed site of brackish marsh compared to 31 species in a similar ungrazed site. CO2 fluxes in salt and brackish marsh were found to be similar while CH4 flux in the salt marsh was found to be lower than in the brackish marsh. Within the brackish marsh, a higher methane emission was recorded in the grazed zone. However the overall effect of grazing and mowing was found to be negligible for CH4 flux but is suggested to clearly reduce CO2 flux in both the salt and brackish marsh.

Abstract

Phosphorous (P) is one of the essential minerals for plant growth and development.  The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Phosphorous on Rhyncostylis retusa seedlings in in vitro culture and to investigate the optimum P concentration for growth and development of the plantlet. Protocorms derived from seed were inoculated on KC (Knudson C) media with a range of P concentrations (0 mM; 0.42 mM; 0.84 mM, and 1.2 mM). The result showed that phosphorus influenced the growth and the development of R. retusa seedlings. Growth and development of the seedlings were inhibited on control treatment (0 MM), while seedlings on P concentration of 0.42 mM; 0.84 mM, and 1.2 mM grew better.
