Abstract

Agarwood is an important forest product due to its high economic value. However, the natural population of agarwood species has been decreasing rapidly because of over exploitation, therefore the international trade of the most important agarwood species (i.e. Aquilaria malaccensis) is restricted to just a small quota. This research was conducted in an attempt to provide basic information for the conservation of Aquilaria spp. by identifying the species spatial distribution and habitat characteristics and developing a linkage model between their abundance and habitat characteristics. Data were collected through a field survey at Kutai National Park in August 2006 with Aquilaria spp. as the target species. Data on the species localities were used to determine the species densities and the value of Distance Index of Dispersion. The ordinance levels between the target species and the surrounding other species were identified using a correspondence analysis, while the linkage model between the species abundance and habitat characteristics was established using an ordinal multinomial logit model. The results showed that Aquilaria spp. had a low density (0.01/ha) and were spatially distributed in a clump pattern. The abundance of Aquilaria species had a close association with soil texture, humidity and acidity, land elevation, air temperature and humidity, and light intensity. The abundance decreased with increasing the proportion of sandy clay loam content, soil humidity and acidity, land elevation, and light intensity. In contrast, the abundance increased with increasing sandy loam content, air temperature and air humidity. The existence of A. malaccensis was likely to associate with the existence of Goniothalamus sp., Macaranga sp., Vordia splendidissima, Lygopodium sp., and Stachyphrynium borneensis.

Abstract

Derajat keterbatasan serbuk sari pada A. pulcher mencapai 0.79-0.80.

Abstract

Due to potential impact of invasive alien (exotic) species to the natural ecosystems, inventory of exotic species in the Cibodas Botanic Gardens (CBG) remnant forest area is an urgent need for CBG. Inventory of exotic species can assist gardens manager to set priorities and plan better responses for possible or existed invasive plants in the CBG remnants forest. The objectives of this study are to do inventory of the exotic species in the CBG remnant forest and to determine whether several environmental variables play role to the existence of exotic species in the CBG remnant forests. There are 26 exotic plant species  (23 genera, 14 families) found and recorded from all four remnant forests in CBG. Cluster analysis of four environmental variables shows that clustering of environmental factors of exotic species correlates with the abundances of those exotic species. The relation between environmental factor clusters and the abundance of those exotics signify the role of environmental variables on the existence of exotic plant species. The information of exotic plant species in the remnants forest is the base information for gardens manager to manage exotic species in CBG remnants forest. The relation of several environmental factors with exotic species abundance could assist gardens manager to understand better the supportive and or suppressor factors of exotics in the CBG remnants forest. Further study on these species is needed to set priorities to decide which species should be treated first in order to minimize the impact of exotic plant species to native ecosystem of CBG.

Abstract

Abstract

Most members of family Rafflesiaceae are  rare plants which found only in a restricted area in Southeast Asia. As a holoparasitic plant Rafflesia totally depends on the specific host plant in specific habitat. The rarity of Rafflesia caused the limited number of research of many biological aspects of this species.  In this study, observations on the fruit and seed  of R. patma and R. arnoldii were carried out  in its habitat and laboratory. Figures and dimension of the seeds was recorded by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).

Abstract

Abstract

The characteristics and viability of agarwood (Aquilaria microcarpa Baill.) seed from the Bogor Botanic Gardens collection was investigated. Two batches of seed from intact mature fruit and dehisced mature fruit were tested for viability using germination and tetrazolium test methods. The result showed that although the tetrazolium test indicated a similar level of seed viability between the two batches (i.e. 85 — 93 %), the germination capacity of seed batch derived from dehisced fru,it was greatly reduced (i.e. 46 % total seed germination) compared to that derived from intact fruit (i.e. 97 % total seed germination). The decrease of seed germination capacity indicated the loss of seed vigour and was concomitant with the decrease of seed moisture content from 42.22 % to 24.79 % (fresh weight basis), thus underlining that the seed has a recalcitrant characteristic. Further observation on the seedling growth showed that there was an incidence of abnormal seedlings encountered in the seed batch from dehisced fruit. Detailed information on the morphological characteristics of the fruit, seed and seedling are presented in this paper.

Abstract

Cytological observations have been carried out by several researchers in South China, Japan, Ceylon, Hongkong, Himalaya and Java. The results from various regions showed that P. multifida had a fairly high genetic variation, namely diploid, triploid and tetraploid types. Therefore cytological and reproductive study on P. multifida from its geographical distribution areas need to be done. The objectives of this research were to observe the somatic chromosome number and reproductive type of P. multifida, and to recognize the relationship between morphological variation and its ploidy level as well as stomatal index. Plants were collected from several localities in Bogor. Ploidy level was determined by observing somatic chromosome number by using squash methods. Reproductive type was determined by counting spore number in each sporangium. Morphological characters examined were the stipe, lamina, pinnae, veins, and indusium. Observations of stomata and epidermis of leaves were done by making an incision paradermal leaf. Pteris multifida has two ploidy level and reproduction type, namely apogamous triploid (2n = 87) and sexual tetraploid (2n = 116). The two ploidy levels could not be distinguished based on morphological characteristics, but they can be differentiated by their epidermal cells number. Apogamous triploid has fewer number of epidermal cells, the sexual tetraploid has a greater number of epidermis.

Abstract

Research on vegetation characteristics and vegetation community similarities was conducted in Mount Ciremai National Park. Three vegetation communities found in the southern part of this National Park, i.e. Parigi-Paguyangan Badak-Acip area (PPA), Karamat Purnajiwa area (KP) and Karamat Sanghiang area (KS), Kuningan, West Java, were investigated. Quadrant method with 10 observation plots per ha was used for vegetation analysis whereas the Jaccard and Sorensen similarity indices were used to evaluate community similarities among the three locations. Vegetation community in PPA (1.100 — 1.580 m asl) was highly dominated by Castanopsis argentea (saninten). This was quite different with the vegetation communities of KP and KS (1.000 — 1.200 m asl) that were dominated by Horsfieldia glabra (kalapa ciung) and several other co-dominant species, such as Sterculia sp., Ficus benjamina and Ficus glabella. Further analysis using Jaccard Similarity Index (lsj) showed that the vegetation communities of KP and KS had a relatively high similarity.
