Abstract

This study examines whether visitor knowledge of ecosystem services corresponds to distinct conservation behavior profiles in Gunung Ciremai National Park, Indonesia. We surveyed 452 visitors face to face using five-point scales to measure knowledge of provisioning, regulating and supporting, and cultural services, attitude toward conservation behavior, and self-reported environmental behavior. Latent scores were clustered with k-means, cluster centers were compared with t-tests, and pairwise correlations were assessed for the full sample and by segment. Two visitor segments emerged: Conservation Advocates (n = 243) and Conservation Supporters (n = 209). Conservation Advocates exhibit higher levels across the constructs and a clearer translation of favorable attitudes into reported actions, with regulating and supporting knowledge appearing especially consequential for behavior. Conservation Supporters show generally lower levels but a more tightly integrated knowledge structure, and provisioning knowledge functions as a practical entry point that links to both attitudes and actions. In the pooled sample, the three knowledge domains covary strongly and align with downstream outcomes, consistent with a konowledge–attitude–behavior sequence. Together, the matrix and table indicate that knowledge provides a common cognitive base, yet the pathway to action differs by segment. This study highlights the strategic importance of visitor segmentation in enhancing sustainable ecosystem management and promoting inclusive, behavior-focused conservation initiatives in protected tropical regions

Abstract

Flood hazard in rural Indonesia is a constant issue, yet detailed risk assessments at the sub-district level are still lacking. This study creates a GIS-based multi-index framework to assess flood risk in Sumbermanjing Wetan District, Malang Regency. It combines hazard, vulnerability, and capacity dimensions using spatial and socioeconomic data. The hazard assessment looks at land systemcharacteristics, average rainfall over the past decade, land cover, and topographic features from a 12-meter resolution ALOS PALSAR DEM. Vulnerability and capacity are based on demographic and institutional indicators. We normalized variables and combined them into composite indices, resulting in a flood risk map for the entire district. Low hazard conditions cover 62.00% of the study area. Most of the vulnerability is moderate (68.48%), while 28.24% of the area is classified as high vulnerability. Medium capacity levels account for 64.30%, but they are unevenly spread throughout the region. Additionally, 32.11% of the district falls into the high-risk category. The highest-risk zones are found in four villages: Argotirto, Harjokuncaran, Tegalrejo, and Sitiarjo. The results indicate that socioeconomic factors and limited options for adaptation, rather than the severity of physical hazards, drive this risk. Therefore, efforts to reduce flooding in rural areas should focus on building social resilience rather than solely relying on physical infrastructure. Immediate steps in these four villages should include improving healthcare access, increasing emergency preparedness, and creating alternative income sources. Even though this study does not validate hydrodynamic modeling, the framework provides practical and clear guidance for prioritizing disaster management in data-limited areas.

Abstract

The ocean economy plays a crucial role in driving regional development and sustainable natural resource management, particularly in metropolitan coastal areas such as the Special Region of Jakarta (Daerah Khusus Jakarta, DKJ). Despite the rapid development of the ocean economy in many regions, there is little comprehensive research on the ocean economy at the metropolitan scale.This work applies to an Input-Output approach to assess the ocean economic activity within the DKJ area, relying on a regional IO matrix from 2016. Alongside come figures on Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), employment creation factors, and measures of influence spread across industries. Emphasis emerges where certain fields show notable interdependencies with marine-relatedoutputs, shaping paths for advancement. Through such patterns, attention shifts naturally toward those branches capable of generating wider ripple effects. The results show that 25% of DKJ's total output comes from the ocean economy, accounting for 19.7% of the province’s GRDP in 2016. By 2024, GRDP from the ocean economy reached IDR 721 trillion, with projected output of IDR 1,805 trillion. The two largest contributors are marine construction and marine tourism, followed by the maritime industry and the transportation sectors. Where complex logistics chains are examined, integrated approaches like Blue Urbanism emerge, linking constructed spaces to renewed ecosystems. Within different areas, port networks operate independently yet grow tightly linkedunder this framework. Evidence gathered supports detailed planning methods aimed at shaping coastal urban economies where industry expands steadily alongside ecological care and fairer community outcomes.

Abstract

Jakaba or Jamur Keberuntungan Abadi, classified in the Ascomycota phylum, is a fungus that is thought to have benefits in the form of nutrients for plants, and thus has the potential for further cultivation. The success of a pure culture depends on proper media preparation and the suitable environmental conditions for mycelial growth. Accordingly, this study investigated the growthcharacteristics of Jakaba BHP01 under different culture media, pH, and temperature conditions. Three factors were tested: media type (potato dextrose agar/PDA, malt extract agar/MEA, and malt peptone agar/MPA), media pH (pH 4, pH 6, and pH 8), and incubation temperature (10 ± 0.1 °C, 28 ± 0.1 °C, and 35 ± 0.1 °C ). Thus, there were 27 treatment combinations with three replicates.Macroscopic and microscopic observations revealed differences in colony texture, color, and hyphal characteristics under different treatments. The highest average diameter of Jakaba isolates was found in the M2P1S2 treatment combination, MEA medium, pH 4, and incubation temperature 28 ± 0.1 °C. The results of three-way ANOVA showed that the type of medium and pH did not have asignificant effect on the growth of Jakaba isolate diameter, while temperature had a significant effect (p < 0.0001). Pathogenicity tests on sengon seeds indicated that Jakaba BHP01 was nonpathogenic and significantly enhanced seedling length on MEA medium. Moreover, Jakaba BHP01 produced volatile compounds that inhibited Colletotrichum sp. pathogen growth by up to 38% onMEA. These findings provide preliminary baseline information for future studies on the cultivation and potential application of Jakaba BHP01 under controlled laboratory conditions in the future.

Abstract

The rise of urban carbon emissions is being seen as an important global climate change mitigation target, especially for medium-sized cities during rapid urbanization including Mojokerto in Indonesia. Yet almost all the existing studies rely on the basis of macro-scale inventories and overlook micro-spatial variations between urban villages, which cause very little insights into how residential and waste activities drive localized emissions patterns. This study fills this gap through a synergy of the Specific Emission Factor (SEF) method combined with spatial autocorrelation analysis to quantify and map carbon emissions sub-district wise. Empirically generated SEF indicators using the IPCC (2006) Tier 2 method demonstrate 0.278 tons CO₂ /household/year for residential emissions and 0.000579 tons CO₂-eq/person/year for waste emissions. This, was associated with the use of spatial statistical methods (Global Moran’s I, Local Moran’s I (LISA), and Getis–Ord Gi*) to characterize clusters and hotspots. The findings reveal total annual emissions amounting to 13,439.87 tons CO₂, primarily the former related to the residential sector. A Moran’s I value of 0.24 (p = 0.0127) indicated that there was a strong positive spatial autocorrelation, Wates and Kedundung were indicated the emission hotspots and Purwotengah and Sentanan were the cold spots. Results show that Mojokerto carbon emissions are spatially clustered and geographically concentrated, which is indicative of population density and household energy use intensity differences. The findings emphasise the potential of spatially specific mitigation approaches, suggesting that multisectoral and spatio-temporal analyses are necessary to enhance adaptive, context sensitive low carbon urban planning.

Abstract

In Indonesia, peri-urban landscapes are rapidly developing and characterized by mosaics of natural, agricultural, and developed areas. This study investigated the effects of environmental differences across an urbanization gradient on bird community structure and the composition of ecomorphological traits within the tropical peri-urban landscape of Bogor, Indonesia. Field surveys were carried out between September and February from 2020 to 2023 in five habitats: secondary forest, plantation, riparian, built-up area, and farmland. Habitat conditions were characterized using Leaf Area Index (LAI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), land-cover composition, and vegetation measurements. Bird communities were evaluated through standardized point-countsurveys and the calculation of diversity indices. Relationships between habitat variables and bird ecomorphological traits were assessed using Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMMs) and modelbased fourth-corner analysis. In total, 19,637 individuals representing 77 species and 35 families were recorded. Species richness was greatest in secondary forest and lowest in farmland, while the Shannon–Wiener index declined from 3.136 to 2.218 along the gradient from less disturbed to more modified habitats. Tree species richness emerged as a key predictor of several ecomorphological traits. Structurally complex habitats favored arboreal, frugivorous, nectarivorous, and cavity-nesting birds, whereas farmland and built-up areas were dominated by generalist, aerial, and omnivorous species. These patterns indicate that vegetation simplification may drive ecological filtering and functional homogenization. Therefore, in tropical urban environments with rapid urbanization, conservation should emphasize the preservation of remnant trees, enhancement of multilayered vegetation, and restoration of riparian corridors to boost habitat variability and connectivity for bird conservation.

Abstract

High concentrations of ammonia in rivers can cause water pollution through eutrophication. It is necessary to reduce ammonia in an environmentally friendly manner using biofilters, such as zeolite. Water samples from the Musi River, South Sumatra, were collected from six stations, namely Palembang City (Gandus, AMPERA, PUSRI) and Banyuasin Regency (Marga Sungsang, Sungsang II, Sungsang IV). The biofilter was designed to combine physical filtration using filter media such as activated carbon, anthracite, ferrolite, silica sand, and zeolite with biodegradation by nitrifying bacteria. The controls were treated in the same manner as the other samples, without the addition of the bacterial combination. The best decomposing bacteria were determined based on the reduction in ammonia and nitrite levels in the water. Over 14 days, the system achieved a 68.92% reduction in ammonia concentration. The nitrite levels were effectively maintained below 0.063 mg/L throughout the process. Evaluation of the optimal bacterial consortium (Sample C2) showed a significant improvement in key water quality parameters: pH decreased from 8.1 to a more neutral 6.5, while dissolved oxygen increased significantly from 5.4 to 9.42 mg/L, indicating improved aerobic conditions. Molecular identification revealed Klebsiella pneumoniae and Bacillus cereus as the ammonia- and nitrite-degrading bacteria, respectively. The biofiltration system canreduce ammonia pollution and improve river water quality at the laboratory scale.

Abstract

One of the critical watersheds in Indonesia is the Cimanuk watershed, which is recognized as a national priority watershed. Remote sensing plays a vital role in monitoring land use/land cover (LULC) in the Cimanuk watershed. Overall Accuracy (OA) and Kappa Accuracy (KA) are commonly used as primary measures of classification accuracy. In addition to these parameters, it is essential to examine the consistency and rationality of LULC classification over time. This study aimed to compare the accuracy and temporal consistency of three Machine Learning Models: Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Classification and Regression Tree (CART) for LULC classification in the Cimanuk watershed using Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI) images for 2020 and 2025, processed in Google Earth Engine (GEE). The results indicate that RF has the highest accuracy, with 87.9% (OA) and 83.7% (KA) in 2025, and 83.6% (OA) and 77.9% (KA) in 2020. When examining inconsistent or irrational transitions between 2020 and 2025, CART accounted for 11.97% of these transitions, higher than RF and SVM. After applying temporal consistency correction to the 2020 LULC classification result, RF remains the best-performing classifier, achieving 90% (OA) and 86.5% (KA), followed by CART and SVM. These findings provide valuable insights into incorporating accuracy and temporal consistency assessments into time-series LULC analysis, serving as a reference for future LULC studies in watershed management and other geographic contexts.

Abstract

In recent years, a broad consensus has emerged that global hydroclimatic anomalies have increased rainfall variability in tropical cities. Addressing this, we simulated and predicted rainfall patterns in Jakarta’s Ciliwung River Basin using a hierarchical framework that integrates Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) time series modeling with GIS spatial interpolation. Monthly rainfall records from three stations, Kemayoran (1990–2020), Halim (1990–2018), and Tanjung Priok (1990–2015), were analyzed. Following Ljung-Box and residual tests, the SARIMA (0,1,1)(0,1,1)₁₂ model was selected. Accuracy verification yielded Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) values below 10% for all stations: 8.4% (Kemayoran), 7.9% (Halim), and 8.1% (Tanjung Priok). Core predictions indicate that by 2030, rainfall intensity will continue declining across all stations, while seasonal rainfall rhythms remain stable. Spatial rainfall pattern comparison between 2025 and 2030 reveals a northward shift of the high rainfall concentration zone. This study has two limitations: only three sample stations were used, and no formal uncertainty quantification was performed for spatial predictions, making the reliability of spatial patterns weaker than suggested by visualizations. Despite these constraints, the proposed statistical-spatial modeling approach supports flood preparedness and adaptive water resource management in data-constrained urban watersheds, provided users account for the stated methodological limitations.
