Abstract

This study presents the first multi-decadal analysis of Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) dynamics in the Ruhuhu River Basin, Tanzania, over a 34-year period (1990–2023). Multi-temporal satellite imagery from Landsat 5 TM, Landsat 8 OLI, and Sentinel-2 MSI was classified using the Random Forest algorithm within Google Earth Engine into six LULC categories: water, barren land, forest, grassland, farmland, and shrubland. The classification accuracies were robust (overall accuracy: 81.60–98.70%; Kappa: 80.02–87.40%). The results revealed a sharp decline in forest cover from 56.92% to 28.60%, coupled with significant expansions in farmland (2.99% to 21.40%) and barren land (5.29% to 14.00%), driven by agricultural intensification and coal mining. These transformations have far-reaching implications for the ecological integrity of Lake Nyasa, including disrupted hydrological cycles, biodiversity loss, and reduced ecosystem services. This study provides spatially explicit evidence to support integrated land management and conservation strategies in the Ruhuhu catchment and similar sub-Saharan African river basins.

Abstract

Artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM), locally known as PETI (Penambangan Emas Tanpa Izin), has substantially altered the upstream Taluduyunu River in Pohuwato Regency, Gorontalo Province, a reach supplying drinking water to roughly 19,686residents through PDAM Tirta Maleo. To quantify the scale of this degradation, water quality was assessed at four stations across the disturbance gradient during the 2023 dry season, covering 24 physicochemical parameters against Class II standards (PP 22/2021). Among all parameters measured, only total suspended solids (TSS) exceeded regulatory thresholds. At SR3, the most intensively mined station, TSS reached 21,000 mg/L, 420 times the 50 mg/L Class II limit, while BOD and COD remained below detection limits at all locations. The pollution index (PI) placed SR3 in the heavily polluted category (PI = 10.01) and SR2 and SR4 in the moderately polluted range. Actual TSS loads exceeded assimilative capacity (TMDL) by approximately 100-fold: BPA = 5,237,913.6 kg/day againstBPM = 52,272 kg/day, leaving a deficit of roughly 5.2 million kg/day and requiring a 99% load reduction for compliance. Multi-stakeholder analytic hierarchy process (AHP) analysis ranked TMDL determination (weight 0.341) and river classification (0.264) as themost urgent interventions, ahead of community outreach, monitoring, and law enforcement. The combined TMDL–AHP approach developed here may transfer to other ASGM-impacted watersheds, contributing to SDG 6 and SDG 15 objectives.

Abstract

Pontianak is a lowland area prone to flooding driven by hydrological factors, topographical conditions, and land cover changes. This study analyzed flood inundation using a Multi-Threshold Overlay approach based on Sentinel-1 SAR imagery and examined its relationship with land cover classified from Sentinel-2 MSI imagery using the Random Forest algorithm on the Google EarthEngine. This study assumes that the Multi-threshold Overlay approach improves flood detection reliability by identifying areas consistently detected across multiple threshold values. The relationship between flood inundation and land cover was analyzed using spatial overlay and regression analysis. The results showed that the land cover classification achieved an Overall Accuracy of 78.82% (κ = 0.706), while the flood inundation detection attained an Overall Accuracy of 85% (κ = 0.70). The Multi-Threshold Overlay approach identified 1,335.86 ha of flood inundation and generated consistent inundation areas across all threshold values (1.05–1.25). The consistent identification of inundated areas across multiple threshold values suggests that integrating threshold values can improve the reliability of flood inundation mapping. Overlay analysis indicated that infrastructure areas accounted for 49.8% of the total inundated area, followed by agricultural/plantation areas (26.0%) and vegetation cover (24.2%). Regression analysis further confirmed a strong positive relationship between land cover and flood inundation extent (R² = 0.875; r = 0.93). These findings suggest that the dominance of built-up areas increases the risk of flood inundation, highlighting the importance of infiltration space, sustainable drainage systems, and blue-green infrastructure in spatial planning.

Abstract

The Danau Sentarum landscape in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, is a catchment area containing important peat wetland ecosystems that support biodiversity conservation, local livelihoods, and hydrological functions in the upper Kapuas River Basin. However, under Law No. 23/2014 on Regional Government, formal authority over watershed management in the forestry sector lies with the central and provincial governments, whereas regency governments retain responsibility for other sectoral functions that affect watershed conditions. This study examined the structural relationships among district government functions relevant to sustainablelandscape management in Danau Sentarum. Data were collected through a literature review, focus group discussions, and expert interviews with relevant institutional representatives and analyzed using Interpretive Structural Modelling. The analysis identified 30 functional elements and produced an inconsistency index of 9.56%. Environmental management, spatial planning, and land administration were positioned as the main driver functions with high driving power and low dependence. Agriculture, fisheries, tourism, trade, industry, labor, and energy and mineral resources formed linkage functions that connected ecological governance with naturebased production and local economic activities. Settlement, connectivity, investment, cooperatives and small and medium enterprises, social protection, community empowerment, and public order functions were positioned as more dependent outcomes. These results suggest that district-level watershed governance in the Danau Sentarum landscape may be improved byemphasizing environmental management, spatial planning, and land administration above the coordination of productive and welfare sectors. This study presents a function-based institutional map for district-level planning in Danau Sentarum, and requires additional validation to evaluate its use in other watershed environments.

Abstract

The population density and increasing number of vehicles in Bekasi City have the potential to increase air pollution, especially PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations in Bekasi City. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of the Patriot Bina Bangsa Urban Forest (PBB UF) in reducing the concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 pollutants; measure the ability of leaves from dominant tree species in PBB UF to adsorb particulate pollutants; and analyze the impact of distance, vehicle emissions, Leaf Area Index (LAI), speed, and wind direction on reducing PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations in PBB UF, Bekasi City. The research was conducted using field observations,gravimetry, and literature studies. The effectiveness of Patriot Bina Bangsa Urban Forest in reducing PM2.5 concentration was 14.40% while PM10 was 20.81%. A three-week study of dust absorption by the leaves of the broad-leaved mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) showed that the leaves’ ability to absorb dust increased each week. The average ability of leaves to adsorb daily dust was 14,192.23µg/cm2, with the largest percentage decrease occurring at a distance of 0–10 m (43.07 %). Dust absorption capacity decreases as the distance from the dust source increases. It is suspected that vehicle emissions are the most dominant variable influencing PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations in PBB UF.

Abstract

Habitat edges modify environmental conditions and species interactions; nonetheless, their impact on bird communities in tropical plantation landscapes is still not well comprehended. This study examined bird community responses to edge formation in sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria) plantations in Kediri, East Java, Indonesia. Bird surveys were conducted using point counts across sengon interior, agroforestry edge, and pineapple plantation edge. Species diversity was compared using Hutcheson’s t-test, and feeding guild was analyzed using PERMANOVA. A total of 30 bird species from 20 families and 2,338 individuals were detected. The sengon interior supported the highest species richness (26 species) and diversity (H′ = 2.463), compared with 22 species (H′ = 2.335) at the agroforestry edge and 22 species (H′ = 2.162) at the pineapple edge, though not significantly different (p > 0.05). The lowest encounter rates occurred in the interior (75.3 ± 6.9 individuals/hour), and higher rates occurred at the agroforestry edge (81.2 ± 9.5) and the pineapple edge (79.7 ± 7.4). Feeding guild differed among habitats(PERMANOVA, p = 0.003), although pairwise comparisons were not statistically significant (p = 0.100–0.106). Arboreal insectivores prevailed at the agroforestry edge (22.7%), aerial insectivores at the pineapple edge (18.2%), and both guilds were equally dominant in the interior (19.2%). These results indicate that sengon plantation areas maintain ecological importance for supporting both taxonomic and functional aspects of bird diversity in agricultural environments. Preserving habitat quality and supplementary habitat resources in neighboring areas might further strengthen the ecological function of sengon plantation patches in bird conservation.
