Abstract

Matrifocality has been a rooted tradition in the social history of the community in Aceh. The principles of matrifocality have also affected on how women are positioned in the community, and the socio-gender relation within the community. The fact that Aceh has strongly associated to the Islamic values that claimed to support the paternal traditions. Apparently, the Islamic values and the local matrifocality practices juxtaposed through the roles of adat, which considered as inseparable to Islamic law or teaching, or in local term known as zat ngeun sifeut. Another point in revisiting matrifocality in Aceh in Aceh is an examination of how gender state ideology, particularly during the New Order Regime disregarded some local gender practices across some ethnics in the archipelago. Meanwhile, the state also hegemonied and promoted particular gender state ideology such as state ibuism. Nonetheless, the modernity and social changes have also contributed to the shifting of some matrifocality practices in contemporary Acehnese society. However, since the matrifocality has a strong root in the social life of the community, the principles of the matrifocality still survived until currently, although it transformed into ‘new matrifocality’ practices.

Abstract

Some related marriage traditions, the religious rituals and cultural practices varied across Indonesian societies or ethnic groups. Apart from the principles guided by the Islamic injunctions, the cultural aspects involved in those practices are indeed not typical, modified and changes over the time. In a matrifocal society like Aceh, women had strong roles in adat (cultural) ceremonies such as marriage its related activities as well as ceremonies. This article elaborates some matrimonial tradition within Aceh matrifocal setting of [traditional] Acehenese society. What has changed, and driven behind those changes are among the focus of this brief portrait of women and matrimonial traditions.The data in this article came from my previous research on matrifocality[i], which was then combined with some current data from the field that has connection to the marriage and its wedding practices and ceremonies.[i]      Some parts of this research has been published in Al-jamiah Journal of Islamic Studies vol. 48, no. 2, pp. 321 – 342. Abstract

Pesantren as well as other traditional Islamic education institutions such as dayah used to be portrayed as an institution that set up particular boundaries on women’s public roles. The leadership system applied in the given institutions is also apparently patriarchal; in which man use to be prioritized in the succession of pesantren or dayah leadership. Besides, some discourses of the text books or literatures taught tend to absorb some patriarchal values. Nevertheless, beyond its patriarchal images, indeed there are still some spaces for women’s agency either in the pesantren or dayah – that would include the leadership system or even beyond. This will be feasible either through a ‘derivative power’ when the status is inherited or ‘achieved power’; when personal struggle is dominant to achieve it. Abstract

The history of Islamic educational reform in Indonesia shows that the emergence of the kaum muda group at the beginning of the twentieth century is connected with the emergence of the modern model of Islamic education called “madrasah”.  After independence, the central government established a number of madrasahs for religious education and sekolah for ‘non-religious’ education in a number of areas in Indonesia. Focusing on Islamic education and schools in Aceh, this article argues that although the development of Islamic education in the area initially followed the state-wide pattern of contestation between modernist and traditionalist groups, the context, timing, socio-political factors behind reform and change was varied. This article shows that there is a close intersection between educational change and reform with non-educational factors such as government policies, local socio-political changes, amongst others.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v20i3.513

Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify some values of malee as a part of character education. This research used qualitative approach. The sampel of this research are principals, senior teachers, the Chairman of Aceh Adat Council (MAA) and students in MTsN Kota Banda Aceh. Data were collected by in-depth interview technique, documentation, and corroborated by focus group discussion. The data analysis was held on three stages: data reduction, data display, and data verification and conclusion. The research results showed that there are several malee values that can be used to shape students character in the school, namely: Malee hana shalat (shyness for not doing a prayer), Malee hana puasa (shyness for not doing fasting) Malee Meurukok and mabok (shyness for smoking and getting drunk, Malee kriet (shyness for being stingy), Malee meusulet (shyness for telling a lie) Malee peukaru ngon (shyness for disrupting friend), Malee dendam (shyness for taking a revenge), Malee kuto (shyness for dirty), Malee keuguree (shyness to the reacher/respecting teacher). Malee meucewek (shyness for dating). Malee value has a strong foundation in character building, because it pertains to their daily faith and worship. And, it has social and religious sanctions for those who violate it.

Abstract

In Indonesian Islamic education, Mahmud Yunus is an educationalist who is full of idea and discourse to reform the Islamic education. Moreover, as the one who get involved in Religious department bureaucracy and other structural positions in Islamic institution, including his last career as the first rector of Imam Bonjol Islamic Institution of Padang, Mahmud Yunus has some chances to manifest his idea and discourse widely through his positions. If we try to analyze his idea on reformation in education and teaching, we can clearly see that he has put serious attention to Arabic Language and Arabic teaching. He has written many books such as Arab-Indonesia Dictionary (Qamus), Arabic Language Textbook, called Durus al-Lughah al-‘Arabiyyah, and a special book about Arabic Teaching.

Abstract

This study examines the notions of identity among the minority groups of Chinese in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. It focuses on what has changed, what has been challenged and what is [still] continued, locating the discussion within a context of their social dialectics with the local majority of Muslims due to its time, spatiality and social processes. Admittedly, the history of diasporic Chinese and their social interrelation with the ethnic majority of Acehnese does not occur in static, but in a dynamic way, instead. It was continuously constructed, reconstructed and changed in a specific durability and spatiality within a negotiated space of socio-spatial dialectics between the minority and the local majority groups. Through several observations, and in-depth interviews with people from diasporic Chinese community in Banda Aceh, and with few Acehnese informants, this study discovers that some socio-political situations at macro-national level of the related policies (on minorities), as well as at micro-regional (provincial and municipal) ones, shari’a law application affected the way they interacted, responded, and acted with majority groups, with apparently more efforts being focused on creating non-conflict, harmonious relation with the local majority. Moreover, the efforts to becoming ‘part’ or accepted by the dominant culture is quite prevalent throughout the process, which is also combined with the strategy of building relation (social capital) with the local majority and other important stakeholders of the society, such as through their ethnic-based organization like Hakka, and others.[Tulisan ini menekankan pada pembahasan identitas orang Tionghoa di Banda Aceh pasca konflik Aceh. Fokus kajian meliputi perubahan, tantangan dan apa yang sedang terjadi dalam konteks dialektika sosial terhadap mayoritas penduduk muslim Aceh dalam waktu, ruang dan proses sosialnya. Tidak dapat dipungkiri bahwa sejarah hubungan Tionghoa dengan penduduk Aceh mengalami pasang surut. Hubungan tersebut terbentuk dan berubah dalam lingkup ruang dan durasi tertentu seiring dengan bentuk dialektikal komunitas Tionghoa sebagai minoritas dan penduduk muslim Aceh sebagai mayoritas. Berdasarkan pengamatan lapangan dan wawancara mendalam sejumlah informan dari kedua pihak, kajian ini melihat adanya pengaruh kebijakan level nasional terhadap situasi di tingkat provinsi dan kabupaten. Penerapan Hukum Islam juga mempengaruhi mereka berinteraksi, merespon dan bertindak terhadap kelompok mayoritas muslim dalam usaha membangun hubungan yang harmoni dan damai. Selain itu usaha untuk ‘menjadi bagian’ atau diterima oleh budaya dominan cukup menonjol dalam proses sosialnya yang dikombinasikan dengan strategi membangun modal sosial, baik terhadap penduduk muslim atau pejabat pemerintah, seperti misalnya organisasi Hakka.]
