Although Islamic literature has gained serious attention by Islamic world since 1940s, it has not yet taken a significant place in the world literature, let alone in the English language research areas. For its opponents, Islamic literature is not yet underpinned by a solid definition, while for its proponents, Islamic literature needs further exploration in the sense of its instructional implication. This article seeks to strengthen the existence of Islamic literature by offering its theological and social grounds as well as by proposing possible instructional strategies of using the Islamic literature in teaching English within the contemporary Indonesian context. Research method including R & D and a library research were employed to collect and analyze the data. This study finds that Islamic literature has a strong theological ground and a long established social ground. It is also found that using appropriate visuals, high text exploitability, and relevant glosses are among the effective instructional strategies. Keywords: Islamic literature, English language teaching, visuals, intertextuality, glosses

This paper highlights specifically the inter-relationship amidst the Wali, ancient mosques and sacred tombs (makam) playing vital role in the process of Islamization in the Indonesian archipelago, and in Lombok in particular. The process of converting local religion to Islam involves Wali - a venerated religious figure coming from outside Lombok- and the tangible legacies that he left in the forms of keramat creating new tradition of ziarah. The early stage of conversion was strongly marked by contextualizing Islam into local cultural symbol and cosmology. Embedded in this stage is the development of venerated attributes attached to keWalian, in the forms of: karamah, ngalap berkah, and wasilah. These spiritual attributes are pinpointed to highlight a dis¬tinctive cultural variance of Sasak Muslims in Lombok.

This paper addresses the conference themes by asking what contribution anthropology can make to the study of religious literature and heritage. In particular I will discuss ways in which anthropologists engage with religious texts. The paper begins with an assessment of what is probably the dominant approach to religious texts in mainstream anthropology and sociology, namely avoiding them and focussing instead on the religious ?practices? of ?ordinary believers?. Arguing that this tendency to neglect the study of texts is ill-advised, the paper looks at the reasons why anthropologists need to engage with contemporary religious texts, particularly in their studies of/in the modern Muslim world. Drawing on the insights of anthropologist of religion Joel Robbins into what he called the ?awkward relationship? between anthropology and theology, the paper proposes three possible ways in which anthropology might engage with religious literature. Based on a reading of three rather different modern texts on or about Islam, the strengths and weaknesses of each of the three modes of anthropological engagement is assessed and a case is made for Robbins?s third approach on the grounds that it offers a way out of the impasse in which mainstream anthropology of religion finds itself, caught as it is between the ?emic? and the ?etic?, i.e. between ontologically different worlds.

Muslims in Southeast Asia are overwhelmingly dominant by group of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamaah (Aswaja), the so-called Sunni. They contributed a great deal to the formation of distinct Islamic tradition that can stillibe observed today. In Indonesia, the history of the Aswaja can be considered as the continuous consolidation of orthodoxy which appeared through some successive reforms and santrinization. This consolidation has, of course, played important role for strengthening Malay-Indonesian ulama relationship. This study focusses on the literature used by Malay-Indonesian ulama and reforms performing their idea to their society. This study argues that the Malay-Indonesian ulama were mostly responsible for earliest reforms of Islamic teaching an Muslim life in the archipelago.

This study is tracing the origins of early Sunnism and its relation with Javanese Sufis. Based on primary sources, it is not useless to trace the origins of Sunnism back to the seventh century. By this quest, the portrait of later Sunnism will be, at least, better understood. Besides, following this framework enables one to understand how the Sunnis viewed their own history. Ibn Taimiyya, a very prominent Sunni scholar, for instance, claims that the Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jama`a is an eminent classic ma©hab (ma©hab al-q±dim). It existed before Allah created Abu Hanifa, Malik, Syafi`i, and Ahmad bin Hanbal. Indeed it belongs to the mazhab of certain A¡¥±b who consistently emulated the Prophet. Those who opposed the Jama`a deserved to be called mubtadi`µn.

This paper tries to analyse the millenarian response of the Bantenese to the Western colonization from an anthropological perspective. The history of Banten at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century was marked by various indigenous unrest, rebellion, and resistance against the colonial power. In 1888, several religious leaders of Sufi brotherhoods and community leaders in Cilegon, Banten led a revolt against the Dutch colonial government. This uprising was provoked by the Dutch?s trade regulation, a new economic system, and was fuelled by enduring religious sentiments against the Dutch. While most scholars frame the event as a religious or social political movement, this study focuses on to what some of the Bantenese Muslims perceived as ?unjust? social situations of the colonized world: poverty, inequality, religious restriction, social and political marginalization.

Traditional ritual thus can thus be regarded as traditional wisdom. Kawin Cai is one of the traditional rituals in Kuningan society derived from inter religious views. This study elaborates and puts M. Quraish Shihab and Tafsir al-Mishbah in the discourse of Indonesian exegesis (Tafsir). This paper also tries to place Tafsir al-Mishbah which is currently the most comprehensive interpretation among other Indonesian mufassirs?s work that have a complete interpretation. Further explanation on Tafsir al-Mishbah and other mufassirs are considered necessary, so that Tafsir al-Mishbah will have a clearer position in the academic world. Besides mapping and positioning Tafsir al-Mishbah among other Indonesian interpretations, this paper will also look in depth at the correlation of the study of the Al-Qur`an in the previous interpretations. The result of the study shows that the work of M. Quraish Shihab is the most serious interpretation elaborating the Quranic verses in detail and trying to seek the correlation among the verses or chapters (surah).
