Abstract

Background: Needs of dental cosmetic services increased due to people's desire to get a brighter and whiter smile. Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) is one of bleaching substance that most commonly used. Use of H2O2 in a high concentration can cause a negative impact on the oral cavity. Honey is a natural ingredient that can whiten teeth. This study aimed to determine the effect of concentration of honey on tooth colour changes of teeth whitening process. Method: This research was an experimental in vitro study using pretest-posttest design with teeth as a research sample. 24 premolars teeth as samples were soaked in various concentration of honey (25%, 35%, 50%, 75%). The colour of teeth were measured with a spectrophotometer before and after treatment. Teeth colour were analyzed by paired samples T-test. Result: Paired T-test showed p<0.05, which means that concentration of honey affected on tooth colour changes. One way ANOVA test results showed concentrations of honey significantly affect tooth discoloration (p <0,05). Post hoc test results showed significant difference On the concentration of 25% of the concentration of honey 50%, 75%, but on a concentration of 25% honey and 35% there is no significant difference. Conclusion: From these results, it can be concluded that the concentration of honey affected on tooth colour changes in an in vitro tooth whitening process.

Abstract

Background: Inside the oral cavity, restoration always in contact with wet condition, including carbonated drink with low pH level and erosive potential. Sometimes, materials are stored for prolonged time exceeding their expiration date. This research aimed to determine the effect of expiration date (ED) of GIC type II toward its surface deterioration (surface hardness and roughness) when immersed in carbonated drink.Method: This was an experimental laboratory using GIC type II with ED of 2014,2016 and 2021. Ten cylindrical specimens per group were made (d=10mm, h=2mm). Surface hardness and roughness measurements were done prior andafter specimens were immersed for seven days in carbonated drink. Carbonateddrinks were changed daily to maintain its pH level.Result: There were reduction in surface roughness and increased in surfaceroughness after immersed for seven days. The greatest deterioration occurred ingroup expired in 2014. Based on the Kruskal Wallis test result, there was a signifcant difference in surface hardness alteration (p=0.000) and surface roughness alteration (p=0.000) based on its ED.Conclusion: ED has great impact on surface characteristics (hardness androughness). Using expired GIC type II deal with great risk of surface deterioration when in contact with low pH level beverages

Abstract

Background: The temperature and salivary pH in a person's mouth are highly dynamic (e.g., before, during, and after eating) and so restorations in a cavity must be resilient to these variable conditions. Temperature and immersion conditions affect the mechanical properties of a restoration. This study aimed to determine the effect of environmental conditions on diametral tensile strength (DTS) and surface microhardness of a resin composite with alkaline fillers or zirconia–reinforced glass ionomer cement (Zr-reinforced GIC). Method: Thirty specimens of a resin composite with alkaline fillers (Cention-N, Ivoclar-Vivadent, Lichtenstein) and 30 specimens with zirconia-reinforced GIC (Zirconomer, Shofu, Japan) were stored at different conditions (23°C and 37°C; with and without immersion in water) for 24 hours. DTS was tested with a Universal Testing Machine (AGS-X series, Shimadzu, Japan) and surface microhardness was tested with a Vickers Microhardness tester (HMV-G Series Micro Vickers Microhardness Tester, Shimadzu, Japan). Data were analyzed statistically using a one-way ANOVA test (and Shapiro-Wilk test. Result: The values of microhardness and DTS increased significantly both for the composite resin alkasite and zirconia-reinforced GIC with increasing temperature in the groups without immersion. However, there was a significant decrease in microhardness and DTS after immersion in distilled water at 37°C for both the composite resin alkasite and zirconia-reinforced GIC. Conclusion: It can be concluded that storage conditions affect the microhardness and DTS of resin composite Alkasite and Zirconia-reinforced GIC

Abstract

Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic autoimmune disease sprinkled by T cells on the oral mucosal surface. The goal of OLP treatment is to eliminate erythema, ulceration and relieve symptoms. Corticosteroids are the first line in the treatment of OLP, either systemically or topically. The problem arises when using topical steroids, namely the time of topical steroid attachment to the oral mucosa, especially in cases of OLP with clinical desquamative gingivitis. Some studies suggest that the use of individual gingival tray can overcome this problem. Objective: To provide information on topical steroid use in OLP cases with desquamative gingivitis clinical signs.Case Management: Women, age 31, complain that pain with burning on the lips and mouth is aggravated by spicy food. Intraoral examination shows irregular white plaques on the buccal, labial and dorsal mucosa of the tongue accompanied by diffuse erythema in the anterior gingiva of the upper and lower jaws. Patients diagnosed with OLP. Lesions improve 3 months after topical steroid administration, except lesions on the gingiva. Gingival individual tray is then used to obtain adequate attachment of topical steroids on the gingiva surface. The gingiva showed significant improvement after a month later. Conclusion: The use of topical steroid concoctions applied to the gingival individual tray is effective in treating OLP lesions especially with clinical signs of desquamative gingivitis.
