Celt: A Journal of Culture, English Language Teaching & Literature is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal, published biannually in the months of July and December with p-ISSN (printed): 1412-3320 & e-ISSN (electronic/online): 2502-4914 It presents articles around the area of culture, English language teaching and learning, linguistics, and literature. Contents include analysis, studies, applications of theories, research reports, and materials development. It is firstly published in December 2001. Ever since 2005 its manuscripts could be read online through www.journalcelt.com. PEDAGOGICAL IMPLICATION OF THE RHETORICAL STRUCTURES OF BARACK OBAMA'S AND HILLARY CLINTON'S DEBATES DURING DEMOCRATIC CAMPAIGN PERIOD OF AMERICAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN 2008 Slamet Utama

This study discusses the rhetoricalfeatures ofBarack Obama's and Hillary Clinton's debates. This debate was carried out during the Democratic campaign period on American presidential election in 2008. The main focus of this dissertation is on the examination of the patterns of Communicative purposes or 'moves' and their subsequent elements or 'steps' of the arguments. The analysis includes the examination of communicative purposes and persuasive values of the texts, and linguistic features used to materialise the communicative purposes and persuasive values. The problem statements of the study are: 1/ What are the rhetorical features realized in Barack Obama's and Hillary Clinton's debates during Campaign Period on American Presidential Election in 2008?, 21 From the rhetoricalfeatures perspective, how can Barack Obama's and Hillary Clinton's debates attract the audience?, 3/ Pedagogically, what lessons can language learners obtain from the debate between Obama and Hillary Clinton? This study found that macro rhetorical structure of the debate (ie. Initiation, Response, and Feedback) is relatively similar to that of a common debate except that, unlike in common debate, the Initiation is given by moderators and questioners, the Responses given by debaters, and Feedback can be given by moderator, questioner, or debaters. In this debate, there is no interruption while the debater was speaking. The debater would speak only if he/she was given an opportunity to speak. And the other difference from the common debate is that Barack Obama's and Hillary Clinton's debates had already been designed by the Dream Team before the debate occured. However, the communicative purposes and persuasions in the debates are relatively the same. The debaters persuade the audience to give them votes in the American presidential election in 2008. The differences are found in the way that rhetorical devicess use linguistic resources to realize the communicative purposes and persuations in the arguments. The rhetorical differences are caused by the differences in the arguments of offering the approaches to solve the Americans' problems. The pedagogical implication of this study is that the debate genre needs to be explicitly taught to Indonesian students, especially university students in order to give them more acces to the content of debate, and to develop skills needed by Indonesian lecturers. For this purpose, an appropriate approach needs to be developed; that is to teach the generic features of debate such as in speaking.

One important theme attached to pop culture is the politics of representation and sub-cultural identity. The pop singer Madonna and then the Spice Girls are frequently regarded as the representation of modern women offering a different face of feminism ideology. Successfully entering the market competition, Madonna, through her cry of 'material girl', characterizes herself as an independent woman in the still dominating patriarchal world while challenging the burden of morality placed on the shoulders of women. She asks young women to rebel against male-centred traditions and unashamedly exposes her sensuality as a source of power and even domination, or in short celebrating 'being women'. The flag of Girl Power is also waved by the 1990'sBritish female singers, the Spice Girls, who call young girls to "be strong, be brave, be loud and control your own destiny. Believe that your self can do anything you want to do and be confident. We have to be independent, but it does not mean that you don't need a boy" (Swastika 2004: 66).

TEACHING AND LEARNING GRAMMAR AND STYLE IN WRITING - A PRACTICAL APPROACH Larcy C Abello

This report focuses on the exploration of the three dimensions of grammarform, meaning, and usea practical approach to teach and learn grammar and style and effect communication. Using journalistic, literary, and academic/scientific/technical texts, this describes the teaching-learning process involved in language activities, such as text analysis, text conversion, and writing" of original texts. This paper, explains how the procedure engages students in meaningful tasks that hone their language skills and enhance their writing ability and could inspire them to speak and communicate ideas, applying critical/analytic thinking even outside the classroom thus developing autonomous learners. This demonstrates a practical approach to the teaching of language as communication based on a careful consideration of the nature of language and of the strategic development of writing skills among learners within a supportive social context.

The Analysis of Interlingual and Intralingual Interference in Children’s Literature Translation Project Mozes Kurniawan

Translation is important in preparing children's literature, especially in children's education. When a prospective teacher does not correctly translate teaching materials, children will be impacted by such inaccuracies such as learning confusion, improperly instilled socio-cultural values and even inadequate intellectual development. The disturbances mentioned are under these two condition such as: interlingual interference (also known as transfer between languages) and intralingual interference (also known as transfer in one language) which is reflected from the translation of English-language teaching materials. This research was a descriptive research aiming to find out, describe and explain the interlingual and intralingual interference found in children’s literature translation project. Participants of this research were students who joined in English Language Learning class of Early Childhood Teacher Education study program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana Salatiga. By using translation task/project and semi-structured interview, the research data was collected. The result showed that students still encounter interlingual and intralingual interference especially in some categories. This finding triggered English language practitioners to cope with translation disorder in order to produce the best translated material for children’s education.

the history of black America is miserable. Their ancestors coming from West Africa were taken to America trough the South to become slaves. Their human rights wee banned for centuries. They lived in a democratic country, America, but they had no right to live properly. They dreamt to have a life as the whites had. In the nineteenth century, it happened that a rat development in Protestant Christendom opened the opportunity for the establishment of black churches. The National Baptist Convention, whose major followers were blacks, was a denomination that existed in America. This denomination accommodated the aspiration of freedom for the blacks in America.

The importance of mastering English for Indonesian students is getting higher due to the globalization in all sectors. One measure to improve the mastery of English done by the government is by implementing the English National Examination with a passing grade of 4.25. There are two kinds of English National Examinations in the school year 2004/2005 and 2005/2006. One is based on the 1994 Curriculum and the other is based on the 2004 Curriculum. The English National Examination in Indonesia has included listening section since the school year 2003/2004. Ever since the application of the examination in the school year 2004/2005 there are many controversies about the National Examination with the passing grade of 4.25 nationally, but the government still goes on with the National Examination because it believes that the advantages outweigh the disadvantageous. The controversies, however, will decrease if the government does not use it to determine a students graduation.

In a world of patriarchy, the head of a family is usua/~v the male. However, under certain circumstances, such as the depression era of the 1930s that the Black American family had to face, the mother is forced to become the head of the family. Through a brief look at history, actual~v the function of Black American woman as the key person of upholding the family ties and sustaining thefamity 's livelihood has been carried out ever since the Blacks arrived in America as slaves. 7'hrough one kind of cultural studies approach, i. e. an American studies approach, the article discusses this event through a close analysis of the female characters described in the novel 'Sula '.

CAN EFL LEARNERS' LEARNING STYLES IMPACT THEIR PERFORMANCE ON WRITING SKILL UNDER DIRECT AND INDIRECT CORRECTIVE FEEDBACKS? Mojtaba Maghsoudi; Sahar Saeedi

This study presents the findings of an investigation of the impact of teacher error corrective feedback on 180 field-dependent/ field-independent (FD/FI) male and female pre-intermediate and advanced Iranian EFL learners writing skill. The participants were separated into two experimental groups and one control group and were asked to write three paragraphs of about 100-150 words around three different topics, each in odd days of a week; then they received direct (in experimental group 1), indirect (in experimental group 2) and no correction feedback (in control group). The results based on Mean Scores, Standard Deviation, Multivariate Analyses and 1-way ANOVA showed that there was not any significant difference between the FD/FI learners' writing skill scores who had received corrective feedback on their errors; however, as indicated by the second finding of the present study it would be better to feedback field-dependent/-independent EFL learners indirectly. It was also indicated that, learners' learning styles had made a significant change in their writing skill scores.

Having girlfriends may bring many advantages for women. They can relate and be comfortable with each other. This makes them talk about anything in a group. Thursdays at Eight talks about friendship bond and the power inside them through pain, rejection, ambition, and lost. This article, which uses Feminism approach, emphasizes in Third-wave Feminism and is intended to analyze thefriendship bond and the courage of the women in the novel. For example is how the characters in the novel get up and fight to reach what they want throughfriendship bond.

Evaluating Teachers’ Performance: A Need for Effective Teaching Siti Aimah; Bambang Purwanto

This article reports a study, which aims to evaluate the EFL teachers’ performance of teaching in the English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (Unimus). The study was conducted to find out how competent the English lecturers/university teachers in the Department are in conducting an English Language Teaching (ELT) program in the classroom. A case study was employed to five teachers who taught the fifth-semester students in the Academic Year of 2017/2018. Through an observation during their teaching and learning process by involving four observers and through a questionnaire distributed to the 13 students in the fifth semester. The study shows the different results of teachers’ performance from both the teachers’ and students’ perspectives. Based on observation, it is revealed that the teachers’ performance in ELT program does not show a satisfactory result yet. The teachers tend to use unvarying methods and focus on certain students without knowing that some of them have learning problems. Meanwhile, from the questionnaire distributed to the students, it shows that the teachers have good competencies in conducting an ELT program in the classroom in which one of the indicators is seen from the personality of the teachers.
