Abstract

Nowadays people are living in a postmodern society, which is nihilistic because many things are being simulated that no one actually knows which is real. What people see on television or a magazine, for example, is regarded more real than the reality itself. One of the factors that make a society feel more comfortable in living in a hyper-real world is because of the existence of advertisements or ads. Thus, to understand what is signified by an ad, a reader or consumer needs to take in mind the theory of postmodernism laid out by Jean Baudrillard.

Abstract

The paper reports a small-scale exploratory research into the potential of Facebook for blended learning. It sets out to find answers to two research objectives: (1) ) identify the learners' opinions about the use of Facebook as a means of learning reading and job interview in English, and (2) determine the effect', of blended learning on the learners' mastery of new vocabulary. Twenty-five freshmen students of class 2008 who were taking English class at Ma Chung University were taken as the respondents. After a pre-test was administered to them to identity their initial vocabulary mastery, an online task was assigned to them. The task required them to learn interview techniques, upload their own interview session, and read texts. A face to face interaction followed to deal with difficulties and clarify some issues. A post-test measuring their vocabulary growth and questionnaires to identify their opinions were then given at the end of the experiment. The result shows that while gaining significantly higher mastery of new words, the learners expressed different opinions on the use of Facebook as a means of blended learning. The majority felt that face-to-face interaction still needs to accompany the online session to clear up some difficulties and misunderstanding during the online session, while a few others opted for exclusively online session because of its efficiency and higher participation rate by passive learners.

Abstract

Although often taking part in seminars and workshops on how to teach English to their students, it seems that elementary school teachers of English (though not all) do not really implement what they have received in their classrooms. The seminar that the English Department of Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University held on the 8th of August 2015 was a workshop where the participants, the elementary school teachers of English, were trained to demonstrate how to use drama, storytelling, games and songs as techniques in teaching English to their students. They were expected to be able to use these techniques in their respective classrooms. The techniques became the alternatives to the current techniques being practiced at schools to enliven the learning atmosphere. Therefore, this study which is the third level or the last level of our project on developing an English handbook for English teachers at elementary schools, is in the form of an observational study describing how the teachers implemented the techniques -- drama, storytelling, games and songs -- in their respective classrooms, students’ responses and   what problems took place when the teachers were carrying out the techniques. The results show that the teachers were able to teach those techniques in their classes, students actively took part more actively in their English class, and they liked games and songs much.

Abstract

The 21" century is marked for the vast development of digital media. I fbefore, communicating with people from another country is reached by the sending ofletters or making international phone calls, nowadays people can do all of those in one go with the internet. Whether it is writing to people or speaking to them, all can be done at once with a bonus of even seeing who and what the other end is doing. The chatting facilities of e.g. the Yahoo Messenger or Skype make it possible. Similarly, ifbefore students would spend hours of research at a library to fmd and read books, nowadays some of those same books can be read digitally in their own homes. Yet, Nancy Frey exclaims: "Readers in the 21 st century need to be able to analyze what they read and understand the motive of the author and the accuracy of the reading. They need to see themselves as active users, not merely vessels to be filled" (in http://www.educationworld.com /a_curr/profdev/profdevl05.sht m1, 2010). To do this, the traditional method of giving books to students to read either inside or outside the classroom, is a fact not to be argued. The problem is, with numerous instant facilities that a student can have now, may make them not patient enough to sit for long hours reading the pages and pages of books assigned by a teacher.

The tutorial program was intended mainly to help the student improve his pronunciation. At the same time, the writer benefited the program to conduct a self study improving her pronunciation teaching practice and her understanding of that practice. A participatory observation, several interviews and a reflective writing were taken as sources to collect the data. During the program. the writer noticed some aspects of her content knowledge were transformed and evolved. The improvement of the writer's pedagOgical content knowledge (PCK), as a result of the tutorial practice, were discussed in terms of five components suggested by Magnusson et all (1999): orientations of teaching, knowledge of curriculum, knowledge of student understanding, knowledge of assessment, and knowledge of instructional strategies. This study provides a useful inquiry for exploring how one's own practice can be used to improve teacher education courses and teacher education programs.

Abstract

The need for educators to integrate the use of technology in the classroom is growing for the past few years. However, previous studies indicated that the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is still at a low level of what the education program requires. Furthermore, it seems that in the field of language education, there is limited research focusing on pre service teachers (PTs). Therefore, to address this gap, this paper aims at investigating how the pre service teacher's understanding of the TPACK principle and how they will apply TPACK in their classroom. This mix-method study is using TPACK questionnaire and interview through a random sampling of 68 pre-service teachers of English Education Department of UNS. Furthermore, the results revealed that most of the participants understood the concept of TPACK well, and they also had various ways to apply it in their classroom. It is expected that knowing pre service teachers' (PTs) perceptions about TPACK in teaching and learning process that can be beneficial for both English Education Department programs and PTs, such as understanding the PTs' teaching abilities, development of the use of technology in teaching by pre service teachers in order to improve teacher department programs itself to develop the teaching practice with the support of technology. In addition, this study has implications for experts interested in the development and assessment of pre service teachers' understanding of teaching with technology.

Abstract

Those who attempt to voice critically about the injustice done by the state frequently face the government's" iron hands ". Indonesia history has noted how some Indonesian critics from various fields are accused of threatening national stability so that they have to be culturized through many kinds of terror. Conscience writers (Mangunwijaya s term) are the easy targets of state violence because they portray the powerless, "wong cilik" (the common folk/little people) as the victims of development, and the inappropriateness of the elites' behavior. For an authoritative regime. such criticism doesn't sound good because it makes look bad in front of the public. In the New Order regime. Wiji Thukul is one of Indonesian poets who does an advocacy for "wong cilik ". His poems are screams of the people from huts, factories. and graves.

Abstract

It is undeniable that Rhapsody on A Windy Night is one of T.S. Eliot's most powerful poems. Its power lies in the use of elaborate and vivid imagery. Though to some critics, this poem seems far from pretty; however, it still implies its "uniqueness". And the uniqeness here is closely related to the relation between the imageries and the dimension of time used. Therefore, this study is intended to assess the kind of relationship between the elements and to what extend they signify the meaning of the poem.
