Abstract

This paper studies socio-economic factors influencing perceptions of the people on water quality improvement of the “Code” River in Yogyakarta. The factors considered in this study such as gender, number of children in family, income, duration of stay, activities in the River and the level of water quality of the River. The research values the location based on contingent valuation method (CVM) yielding two types of estimates. First, it provides simple average expressing the expected willingness to pay (expected WTP) of the respondents for water quality improvement of the River. Second, it employs the ordinary least square (OLS) to estimate those factors in relation with their willingness to pay. The result shows the influence of gender and the number of children in family on their willingness to pay for water quality improvement of the River, as also found for the duration of stay and activities in the River.

Abstract

Energy has become an essential part of our lives, but the current energy sources we used are depleting and non-renewable. In the case of Maldives, fuel energy is expensive due to importation and high transportation cost.  Besides, Atoll islands' characteristics require each island to have a power plant using fossil fuel, and the fuel storage availability is limited, making the electricity in these islands unstable and costly. Therefore, the need for cleaner and reliable resources for energy is essential in order to ensure a better future.  This study aimed to determine the factors influencing solar energy acceptance by inviting people to participate in the electronic survey in the Maldives, with 119 samples collected. The result revealed that most respondents were willing to go for a solar energy source for electrification due to the current high electricity bills. A binary logistic regression analysis was performed to predict the factors for the acceptance of solar energy. The result showed that people's attitudes and current electricity bills were significantly influential in solar energy acceptance. The presumptions for policymakers are to increase the people's knowledge and awareness to elevate a positive attitude and involve the private sector to increase competition and utility in the field

Abstract

Abstarct: The aim of this study is to measure the credit risk problem at BPR ABC inYogyakarta Special Region. The analysis instruments are descriptive statistics and probability. There are nine important findings result from the measurement of credit risk in BPRABC. First, gender differences customers can not be used as a primary consideration in theassessment of credit worthiness, because it has nothing to do with the smoothness of creditpayment. Second, BPR ABC as other microfinance institutions channels credit to most smallbusinesses, because it has the lowest risk. Third, low interest loans rather than loan guaranteeslow risk. Fourth, the high ratio of value of collateral and credit score is not a measure to ensure that the loans extended lower risk. Fifth, trade, hotels and restaurants have relatively low credit risk. Sixth, the more liquid a type of collateral, lower the risk. Seventh, the agreement witnessed by a notary to have a lower risk than the agreement without a notary. Eighth, the farther location cause the greater credit risk customers. Ninth, the shorter the period of credit payment, the lower the risk.

Abstract

Controversy over some issues in Islamic economics of project evaluation centers basically around the role of interest as a determining-basis for discount rates, because of the interest prohibition in Islam. Apart from the question of the discount rates, the issue of incorporating social costs and benefits into any scheme of evaluation becomes especially important in the Islamic perspective. This paper reviews 30 books and selected papers on the relevant subject, and establishes three main findings. First, unlike mainstream position that relies on Fisher’s work, Islamic economics conceives time preference as not a mere consumption phenomenon, but rather of production. This finding perceives this mainstream concept as the “fallacy” of Fisherian approach Related with goods and resources, they are endowed to all human being, therefore, all resources (and all goods) are perceived initially as public goods, and satisfy both the criteria of public goods (non-rivalry and non-exclusion) to human being. Private ownership is lawful under Islmically legitimate means so that public goods, externality, and other related concepts are perceived differently from those in conventional economics. Finally, the basic difference between Islamic and conventional economics is that human behavior in Islam is imbued by ethical values. This difference necessitates different methodological justification in project evaluation. As such part two attempts to provide some departures from the conventional approach.
