Abstract

This paper examines the effect of exchange rate fluctuations on the capital account in Nigeria from 1980 to 2015. The data used for the study were retrieved from the Central Bank of Nigeria Bulletin. The study employed Johansen co-integration test, Error Correction Model (ECM) and Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS). Evidence from the study shows that exchange rate has no effect on the capital account. As a result of the study, production in the Nigerian economy must be encouraged through availability of domestic credit while market determined interest rate should be encouraged to stimulate economic growth and investment

Abstract

Abstract

In 2007, Indonesia launched a 3 kg Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder for poor households, and micro-enterprises were started on Java island to reduce the burden of fuel subsidies. In its implementation, the subsidized LPG may also be used by non-target households, which has implications for the government’s fiscal burden. To avoid this, it is necessary to understand household behavior towards non-subsidized LPG choices. Household income and fuel availability determine the choice of household cooking fuel types. However, existing studies have not seen the relationship between subsidized and non-subsidized LPG as a household cooking fuel. Using rich data from the March 2018 National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas) and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (KESDM) information, this study examined the relationship between income, subsidized LPG quota as a representation of the availability of subsidized fuel, and non-subsidized LPG choices as household cooking fuel in Java in 2018. The Multinomial Logit model's estimation results found that an increase in income and a decrease in subsidized LPG quotas were correlated with an increase in the opportunity to choose non-subsidized LPG as household cooking fuel in Java in 2018. Furthermore, this study revealed that the largest subsidized LPG users were non-poor households.

Abstract

The economic valuation of ecosystem services has promoted awareness from within the society to both the ecological and economic consequences of biodiversity loss. This has emerged with reference to the debate about its usefulness. This study, however, reviewed the concept of ecosystem services as a discourse within its metaphor about human dependence on the natural world. Some literature, reports or strategic plans, historical archives and websites were reviewed to conduct the sociopolitical analysis of the institutionalization of the concept in the prior review. It depicts specifically the context of the local communities’ movement to value the natural capital at the Lewes area, East Sussex, England as part of the programs to decouple ‘green payment’ from agricultural sector. Based on the collected evidences, this research argues, there have been a similar pattern of the institutional settings towards the environmental protections between changes related to agricultural pressures and urban pressures. Finally, it can be concluded that, the discourse of ecosystem services using the economic valuation process has also been shaped by the elite capture.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to test the ability of artificial neural network (ANN) as an alternative method in time series forecasting and compared to autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) in studying saving deposit in Malaysian Islamic banks. Artificial neural network is getting popular as an alternative method in time series forecasting for its capability to capture volatility pattern of non-linear time series data. In addition, the use of an established tool of analysis such as ARIMA is of importance here for comparative purposes. These two methods are applied to monthly data of the Malaysian Islamic banking deposits from January 1994 to November 2005. The result provides evidence that ANN using “early stopping” approach can be used as an alternative forecasting engine with univariate time series model. It can predict non-linear time series using the pattern of the data directly without any statistical analysis.

Abstract

Abstract:This study aims to determine the preferences of individuals to choose traditional medicine in Indonesia. The data used in this study obtained from the Indonesian Family Live Survey (IFLS) and it’s a longitudinal survey with a panel data study. The use of IFLS data is to obtain recent information on variables to be tested. The subject in this study is the individual in the household aged 15 years old or more in 13 provinces survey members. Research variables used in this research are the owner of health insurance, age, region of residence (urban), income, distance to health facilities, the number of medicine post and education of household members IFLS. Data processing was performed using probit regression method The results showed that age, region of residence and the existence of postal medicine influence to the individual probability to choose traditional medicine. The probability value for each variable showed that individuals in household that over age, living in the village and living in the region of postal medicine have a higher educated have a higher probability high to choose traditional medicine.

Abstract

Risk of non-performing loans is one of the risks faced by rural banks as one type of micro-bank financial institutions. Rural Banks should have risk control system to minimize the possibility of a credit crunch. This paper has the purpose of estimating the factors that affect a credit crunch in BPR XYZ. The model was built estimated by logistic regression. There are two models to be estimated. Model One is the complete model, while Model Two is a simple model. Model two independent variables are the result of extraction from unrestricted variable Model One using factor analysis. The results show that the probability of nonperforming loans in BPR XYZ is influenced by the predictor credit interest, the ratio of collateral and credit, the level of risk of collateral types and levels of risk customer groups

Abstract

This study examines the impact of fiscal policy and private consumption on economic growth among the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) spanning from 1988 to 2017 using the Panel Pool Mean Group. The results depicted that the government’s recurrent expenditure for growth was inversely but significant to economic growth, while capital expenditure was positively and statistically significant to explain economic growth in Nigeria. It can be seen that capital expenditure is vital for economic growth. Besides, private consumption’s negative effect on economic growth was a disconnection between economic output and private consumption. The results further showed that tax revenues in ECOWAS countries had a positive and significant influence on economic growth. Therefore, the study recommends re-visit government policy(ies) channeling government spending to increase ECOWAS output rates and spur regional economic growth.
