Abstract

Post-tin mining land is dominated by sand fractions and low in organic C content and essential macronutrients. A high yield of elephant grass can be produced on land containing sufficient and constantly available nutrients. This research aimed to determine the effects of mycorrhizae and NPK fertilizer ameliorants on the growth and yield of elephant grass plants in post-tin mining land. This research was arranged in a randomized complete block design with a combination of mycorrhizae and NPK fertilizer doses. Treatments consisted of control (without mycorrhizae and NPK), NPK 100%, mycorrhizae + NPK 25%, mycorrhizae + NPK 50%, and mycorrhizae + NPK 100%. The recommended dose of NPK 100% was 300 kg/ha. The research results demonstrated the significant effects of the combination of mycorrhizae and NPK fertilizer doses on the plant height, number of clumps, and crop production per plot. Applying NPK fertilizer 100% to elephant grass plants resulted in the highest ratoon yields in post-tin mining land.

Abstract

Sporisorium scitamineum is a Basidiomycota pathogen that causes smut disease in sugarcane plants. The pathogen can infect all types of sugarcane, with the extent of damage depending on the plant's susceptibility. Farmers rely on chemical pesticides to control S. scitamineum , but these pesticides have negative environmental impacts. Using Trichoderma sp. and Streptomyces sp. as biocontrol has been proven against fungal infections and is safe for the environment. This study evaluated the potential of Trichoderma sp. and Streptomyces sp. against S. scitamineum under in vitro conditions. Each of the three isolates of Trichoderma sp. and Streptomyces sp. was assessed using the VOC (Volatile Organic Compound), chitinase enzyme, and in vitro antagonistic assays. The results indicated that Streptomyces spp. demonstrated higher chitinase activity compared to Trichoderma spp., with isolate ST1 having the highest chitinase index at 3.7%. VOC test demonstrated that Streptomyces spp. markedly inhibited the mycelial growth of S. scitamineum, attaining inhibition rates of up to 82%. Conversely, Trichoderma spp. exhibited enhanced antagonistic activity via direct interaction, with isolate TD2 suppressing pathogen growth by 82% in dual-culture assays. The findings show that Streptomyces spp. and Trichoderma spp. suppressed S. scitamineum in different but complementary ways. The study shows that they could be used as environmentally friendly biological control agents to manage sugarcane smut.

Abstract

Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a major insect pest of horticultural crops, causing significant yield losses.The efficacy of Beauveria bassiana, a potential biocontrol agent, can be influenced by growth media composition. This study examined the effects of cricket and fruit fly flour on B. bassiana growth and pathogenicity against Z. cucurbitae. The methods added B. bassiana growth media with different concentrations (0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%) of cricket and fruit fly flour and assessing its pathogenicity against Z. cucurbitae at a spore density of 10⁶ and 10⁸ spores/mL. The results showed that 1% cricket flour combined with a spore density ofspores/mL resulted in the highest mortality rate (29.33%) and the fastest infection (2 days). The lowest average mortalities were found in treatments without flour addition which were 21.3%, 19.3%, and 19%, respectively. The longest time to cause infection was observed in 7 days. Infection symptoms are marked by the emergence of white fungal mycelia covering the cuticle, while infected adults exhibit deformed, wrinkled, and smaller wings. These findings highlight the potential of growth media optimization to enhance B. bassiana virulence, contributing to the development of more effective and sustainable biocontrol strategies against Z. cucurbitae.

Abstract

Aspergillus parasiticus, the causative agent of Aspergillus cob rot, and Mucor circinelloides, which causes Mucor stem rot, are types of pathogenic fungi that have the potential to reduce the quality of corn (Zea mays L) harvests. An effective and environmentally friendly approach to control these pathogens is to use biological agents, such as Trichoderma harzianum. This study aims to evaluate the inhibitory potential of T. harzianum against A. Parasiticus and M. circinelloides using antagonism tests with dual culture methods in vitro. The parameters used in this study were measurements of the percentage of the inhibition rate of the biological agent T. harzianum against pathogenic fungi. The results of the antagonism test showed that the biological agent T. harzianum had moderate inhibition against A. parasiticus and M. circinelloides with the percentage of each inhibition during the five days incubation period are 32.5% and 42.38%. This indicates that T. harzianum has the potential as a biological agent in controlling A. parasiticus and M. circinelloides in corn plants.

Abstract

Shallots have physiological and pharmacological effects on the human body and have been cultivated intensively using bio-compost, which might be contaminated with heavy metals. The main objective of this study is to enrich arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in bio-compost and add biological organic fertilizer (BOF) to reduce the absorption of heavy metals in shallot bulbs. The study was conducted in Enrekang District, South Sulawesi, where the components of heavy metal content in plant organs and the level of infection of AMF in plant roots were observed. The study was a filed research arranged in a Randomized Block Design with five treatments, including shallots cultivation method by indigenous farmers/control(B0) and using various doses of bio-compost enriched with AM fungi of 100kg plot-1(B1); 200kg plot-1(B2); 100kg plot-1+BOF(B3); and 200kg plot-1+BOF). The results showed that bio-compost enriched with AMF at a dose of 200 kg plot-1 and 100kg plot-1+BOF could increase Cr, Cu, and Pb accumulation in roots and leaf, as well as reduce metal accumulation in shallot bulbs, with the level of AMF infection classified as very high. The novelty of this study is that organic fertilizer enriched with AMF can reduce the absorption of heavy metals accumulated in shallot bulbs.

Abstract

The high industrial demand for mint products, coupled with low domestic production, has led to a 63% import dependency. Enhancing mint production requires optimizing planting media and fertilization strategies. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different soil-to-husk charcoal ratios and manure types on the growth and yield of mint (Mentha spicata L.). A factorial experiment was conducted from February to April 2022 at the Faculty of Agriculture, UNS, using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with two factors: The first factor was soil-to-husk charcoal ratios consisting of 1 to 3, 1 to 1, and 3 to 1. The second factor was the manure type, which consisted of cow, goat, and chicken manure. Each treatment was replicated four times. The results showed that the P1 combined with the cow manure significantly increased the number of branches compared to P1 with goat manure. P1 also resulted in the highest number of leaves, leaf area, fresh weight, and dry weight. Cow manure yielded the highest values for leaf number, leaf area, and dry weight among manure treatments. These findings suggest that optimizing planting media composition and manure selection can enhance mint productivity, reducing reliance on imports.

Abstract

This paper discusses the development and acceptability of Mead wine flavored with Dragon Fruit. A quantitative descriptive analysis survey was utilized among forty (40) panelists who are experts in alcohol. At the same time, 75 respondents were randomly selected as participants in the sensory analysis using a Hedonic rating scale with a 5-point Likert scale. The results of the study have shown that the product was acceptable, considering its color, aroma, taste, and even the alcohol content of both treatments. In the findings, the highest response on color is ruby with 62.5%, and responses on aroma are regarded as sweet, tangy, and even zesty nuance. The taste reveals that it is fairly acceptable, with a 2.30 mean, which accounts for its acidity and is good for food pairing. On the overall acceptability level of the three coded samples, the wine-coded control got the highest description of high acceptable and a mean of 4.38. As for the willingness to purchase the product, the commercial product got the highest mean of 4.13, acceptable, and wine with code treatment 1 got a high score of 4.03, which is also acceptable. The results of this study imply that mead with added dragon fruit has the potential to produce mead that is preferred by respondents.

Abstract

Cherry tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.) is a perishable commodity due to its delicate texture. Consequently, it necessitates effective postharvest handling. Cherry tomatoes frequently incur mechanical damage during transit due to the voids in the packaging, leading to friction and collisions with the packaging material. This study evaluates the impact of packaging fillers on mechanical damage to tomatoes during transportation and identifies the optimal packaging fillers for cherry tomatoes. This study included plastic fruit crate packaging with dimensions of 38 cm x 26 cm x 12 cm. This study included filler materials consisting of long shredded newsprint and banana leaves and a control group without filler. Transportation simulation was conducted at 3,9 Hz, amplitude 4,2 cm for 90 minutes, equivalent to 108,9 km of transportation. The results showed that packaging with filler significantly reduced fruit damage compared to the control. The highest reduction was observed in the combined filler treatment, which decreased mechanical damage by 62.5% relative to the control. Banana leaf filler also provided good protection, reducing weight loss by 45.8% and maintaining fruit firmness (1.63 kg cm⁻²) compared to control (1.08 kg cm⁻²). However, newsprint filler minimized color change, maintaining the red index 34.15 compared to 41.22 in the control. Overall, the combined filler treatment performed best in preserving postharvest quality. These findings suggest that biodegradable packaging fillers, particularly banana leaves and their combination with newsprint, are effective and environmentally friendly alternatives for extending the shelf life of cherry tomatoes during transportation.

Abstract

Acid soil is widely distributed in Indonesia but underexploited for agriculture due to limited nitrogen availability and aluminium toxicity. Nitrogen fertilizer and rhizobium are crucial to improving plant growth, especially in peanut cultivation. This study examines the antagonistic effects of nitrogen fertilizer and rhizobium on the growth, nodulation, and yield of peanuts cultivated in acidic soil. A factorial randomized complete block design with two factors: nitrogen fertilizer application (0, 50, 100, 150 kg ha-1) and rhizobium inoculation (without rhizobium, rhizobium at 10 g kg-1 seed, and rhizobium sourced from peanut plantations). The combination of 100 kg ha-1 nitrogen and rhizobium from peanut plantations resulted in the highest leaf count (675.33 leaves per plant). A nitrogen dose of 50 kg ha-1 produced the highest effective number of nodules and total nodules. The optimum nitrogen fertilizer dose is 44 kg ha-1 for nodule growth. 50 kg ha-1 nitrogen dose produced the highest number of pods and seed weight, namely 48.67 pods and 407.79 g of seeds. These findings suggest that when applied at an appropriate dose, nitrogen fertilizer enhances peanut growth, nodulation, and yield in acidic soil. However, excessive nitrogen application may induce antagonism with the nodulation process, reducing overall yield.

Abstract

The Indonesian archipelago boasts a rich biodiversity, particularly a vast collection of local upland rice germplasm, many of which remain unidentified. The study aimed to expand the collection of local rice germplasm by considering the genetic variability coefficient and heritability values and identifying cultivars with the potential to become superior local varieties. The research was conducted in Tamarenja Village from April to October 2024. The study used a single - factor randomized block design with eight cultivars as treatments, including Pae Bohe, Kalendeng, Delima, Pulu Tau Leru, Dongan, Wangga, Logi, Tako, Buncaili, Uva, Uva Buya, and Jahara. The collected data were analyzed using variance analysis, genetic variability coefficient analysis, heritability, and agronomic trait analysis using the LSD test at a 1% significance level. The results showed high genetic diversity, with genetic coefficient of variation (GCV) values between 24.56% and 53.49%. Estimates of heritability were also high, with most characteristics having more than 80% heritability. Grain yield (97.93%), number of grains per panicle (95.87%), and 1000-grain weight (97.49%) were all strongly controlled by genetics. Delima exhibited the longest panicle at 38.55 cm, containing 260 grains per panicle. The results identify Jahara, Kalendeng, Dongan, Logi, and Uva Buya as exceptional cultivars with considerable potential for upland rice breeding.
