Abstract

The efforts to increase livestock population can be reach by cattle-palm oil integration. Bireuen Regency contributes 13.32% to the population of cattle in Aceh province. The potency of palm oil plantations, and distribution of cattle population is an opportunity to implement the system of integration of cattle-oil palm- in Bireuen Regency.  The aims of this research were to analyze the potential of system of integration cattle- palm oil - in Bireuen Regency, and to determine the priority of development area of cattle-palm oil- integration. Several analysis that was conducted were: potential analysis of oil palm plantations using Location Quotient, Shift Share Analysis, financial analysis; analysis of level of preference of respondent to farmer group using likert scale; Multiple Criteria Decision Making  with TOPSIS and Analytical Hierarchy Process model. The results shows that Bireuen Regency has considerable potential in developing a system of integration of cattle-palm oil -. This is indicated by R / C ratio > 1, LQ> 1, positive value of SSA and livestock farming profits between 7-10 million / year, and farmers group preference has a high percentage of positive response on farmer group as a forum for human resource development, cooperation , and increased production. Priority for the development of palm oil-cattle integration system in Bireuen Regency are in Peusangan Siblah Krueng, Peusangan Selatan, Juli and Makmur Subdistrict.

Abstract

An increasing population in recent decades has led to the need for increasing the availability of food, so it is necessary to increase the production of paddy as quickly as possible. The aim of this research was to know the supply response of paddy in East Java to various price factors and non-price factors. In this research, the supply response was estimated by the paddy harvest areas in East Java using Cobb-Douglas model and Nerlove partial adjustment, and econometric analysis including stationarity test, cointegration test, and Error Correction Model (ECM). The data used in this research consisted of paddy harvest areas, grain price, corn price, irrigated land area and rainfall amount from 1991 to 2015. The speed of short-term adjustment to the long-term supply of rice was 2.79% and was corrected in the next period. In the short run, all variables did not have a high responsiveness to paddy supply, but in the long run, the irrigation area was very responsive to paddy supply in East Java with a value of elasticity of 1.79. Supply of paddy can be increased by increasing the real price of unhulled rice, the irrigated land, and harvested area of the previous period.

Abstract

Agronomic and ecological aspects play important roles in vegetable production, because the aspects will be used for determining suitable interventions.  This study aims to provide current farmers’ practices of vegetable production, particularly for agronomic and ecological aspects of chilli and tomato in four regions of East Java and Bali.  This study uses of analytical tool of descriptive approach by comparing and contrasting each production practices across regions. Data were compiled from a field survey of 360 farmers during 2013-2014. Results of analysis were presented in graphical and tabular forms. Farmers mostly selected hybrid varieties of vegetables because of economic reasons, such as high yield, good appearance and high number of fruits. Anthracnose and late blight were perceived as the most important disease in chilli and tomato respectively. Farmers controlled pests and diseases using pesticides. In general, farmers perceived that irrigation was one of limiting factors of vegetable farming. Poor drainage was one of the crucial issues in Bali. Farmers mostly sold vegetable once harvested. Post-harvest handling was still traditional, where farmers still less pay attention on post-harvest, even though they observed the economic advantage of post-harvest. Based on the existing practices, a special extension on vegetable production needs to be formulated appropriately, based on the specific characteristics of each region.

Abstract

Land is the main input in agricultural production and also a wealth-generating asset for farmers. There are three common forms of agricultural land ownership:owned land, rented land, and sharecropped (kedokan) land, where each of them are directly affects the farming performance. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of land ownerships on farm production, labor use, and farm economic efficiency. The sample used in this study were 150 farmers equally distributed in each ownership group from a population of 1039 farmers. Cobb-Douglas production function, F-test, and RC ratio were used to estimate production function, the difference in labor use, and farm economic efficiency. The results showed that rented land has the highest productivity followed by owned and sharecropped(kedokan) land. Meanwhile, the sharecroppedkedokan)land has the lowest labor use, followed by rented and owned land. However, in term of profitability, owned land is the highest followed by rented and sharecropped land. The results also showed that sharecropping(ngedok) as an informal contract farming between farmer and landlord was the best economic choice for the landlord. Furthermore, to improve farmers welfare, the landless farmers should be facilitated to own their own land.

Abstract

Development of agriculture mechanization in Sambas Regency is needed in order to support the increased of rice production. Technically, agricultural mechanization is expected to increase the productivity of the land and, economically, it is expected to increase farmers' income. The purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of tractor usage on income and availability of labor in rice farming. This research was conducted in Sambas Regency, using survey method. The results showed that the use of tractors for soil processing significantly increased the productivity and income of rice farming. The use of tractors on soil treatment has increased productivity by 667 kg/ha. The use of tractors on land treatment also increased revenues by Rp.2.843.400,-/ha, although raising the cost. In-house labor and farming families are available for soil cultivation, but farmers generally prefer to use the tractors for soil treatment. The use of tractors has reduced the use of labor, thus accelerating land preparation and planting activities. Farmers who do not use tractors because of environmental factors farming, namely the unavailability of irrigation.

Abstract

Transaction costs arise as a result of uncertainty in the transaction environment. Vertical integration of farmers in an institution will reduce uncertainty and will reduce transaction costs. Transaction costs will affect income and will ultimately affect the level of welfare.  The objective of this research is to compare the transaction costs, income, and welfare between plasma palm oil farmers and independent palm oil farmers. This research used a quantitative research approach with survey method. The research was conducted in Penawartama and Aji Baru sub district, Tulang Bawang Regency. The research location was chosen purposively with the consideration of sub district are the center of palm oil smallholdings. Data collection techniques were used household survey with simple random sampling. Sample size is 152 farmers consisting of 76 plasma farmers and 76 independent farmers. The transaction costs paid by plasma farmers is smaller thanthose paid by independent farmers. Income per hectare of plasma smallholder is higher than the income of the independent smallholder. Even though, palm oil farmers in Tulang Bawang Regency, both plasma and independent farmers are in the prosperous category.

Abstract

As a seasonal crop, rice production is highly depend on the carrying capacity of the climate, that the changing climate requires the adaptive capacity of the farmers. On the other hand, climate change is still a new and complex issue for most people which is followed by differences in response to its impact. This research tries to describe the relationship between communication variables and adaptive capacity to climate change of rice farmers. The survey method is applied in lowland, midland, and upland agroecosystem zones affected by climate change which are represented by 32 rice farmers each. The result shows that there is a very strong relation between climate change communication variables of the farmers and their capacity in adapting to the climate change. Therefore, the diversity of sources of climate change information of the farmers and the frequency of its use, and the exposure to climate change information and convergence of climate change communication of the farmers need to be improved.
