Abstract

This research aimed at investigating the secondary EFL teachers’ teaching strategies during COVID-19 outbreak and figuring out the problems faced in implementing the teaching strategies during COVID-19. This research was designed as qualitative research. The subjects of this research were the secondary EFL teachers at SMP N 4 Kopang selected based on certain criteria. The data were collected through interview and documentation. This research used data condensation, data display, and drawing conlusion as technique of data analysis.  Based on research finding, the strategies implemented by the secondary teachers during COVID-19 were situated teaching and picture description. Those strategies were effective, easy to plan and the students enjoyed the class. Lack of  learners’ motivation, insuficient time, resources and materials were the problems faced by the teachers in teaching English. The strategies above used in general material and affected all aspects such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Moreover, Teachers as educators should be able to synergize a learning activity with the learning method used in every situation. It can support the students’ skill in the process oriented material that will be taught.

Abstract

This research discusses how the U.S. launched its propaganda of American heroism through the film as the medium. This study is classified as qualitative research. The technical analysis of the data used in this research is the technical analysis of qualitative data from Miles and Huberman. The source of information or data for this research are Jon Favreau's Iron Iron Man 1 (2008) and Iron Man 2 (2010) films. The data are the captured scenes and dialogues from the film Iron Man 1 Iron Man 2. A scene can consist of several frames and dialogs that describe the storylines in a scene. The results of the data analysis obtained a list of scenes that contain propaganda techniques. Since the data was in the form of movie scenes, Pierce's semiotics and Villarejo's cinematic theory are used to examine the data. In conclusion, the movie shows several aspects that support the findings in the analysis of American heroism and its maintenance in the movie. The representation comes from how the United States in the movie uses its military power, the perspective of seeing other nations, and shows the U.S has more advanced technology than other countries.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the indicators of hedonism and the most dominant hedonistic orientation reflected on celebrities' accounts. This study uses the accounts of four well-known Indonesian celebrities as research samples. The results of this study were analyzed using the semiotic theory of Roland Barthes. The results showed that there were eleven hedonism indicators reflected by celebrities on their Instagram accounts, namely self-expression, hobby, addictive substance, physical beauty, fashionable appearance, education, achievement, work, social activity, relationship, comedy and religiosity. From these indicators, it is known that universal hedonism and egoistic hedonism are the most dominant hedonistic orientations on celebrities' accounts.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to explore the factors that causes burnout among school counsellors, the effect of burnout among school counsellors, as well as to identify the coping strategies applied to manage burnout.Methodology: This study uses one-on-one semi-structured interviews with eight school counsellors from seven different government secondary schools within the Brunei-Muara district in Brunei Darussalam.Results: The interviews identified three themes in relation to the issues related to burnout, namely the causes of burnout, the effects of burnout, and the coping strategies for burnout.Applications: Implications regarding the importance of the relevant authorities to acknowledge and show appreciation towards the school counsellors effort in carrying out their roles, along with establishing effective coping strategies, and having frequent mandatory sharing session or facilitative programmes are further discussed in this study.

Abstract

Agricultural discourse is the result of conveying a message to increase the agrarian literacy of a community to become agriculturally literate. The goal of this research is to obtain an objective picture about the text structures, social cognition, and social contexts used in the construction of agricultural discourse to establish the agrarian literacy of farmers. The research uses a qualitative method with a symbolic interactionism design to study the way a social interaction is constructed and developed. The data collection methods used were documentation and a content review. The data sources for the research were newspapers and YouTube. The data analysis used a descriptive qualitative method with the stages of identification, classification, and interpretation. The results of the research show that (1) the text structures used to establish agrarian literacy include elements of semantics and syntax, (2) the forms of social cognition utilized by speakers to shape the discourse are person schemes, role schemes, and event schemes, and (3) the social contexts that influence speakers in carrying out encoding are food security and sovereignty, agricultural consultants, and millennial farmers.
