Abstract

This research aims to explore the language features employed by male characters in the Netflix series "Sex Education" and to uncover the underlying purposes associated with each linguistic feature utilized by these characters. Adopting a descriptive qualitative approach supported by quantitative data analysis, the study focuses on the verbal expressions of male characters within the series, encompassing words, phrases, clauses, and sentences within dialogues. Through meticulous analysis, the researcher identifies 249 instances of men's language features within the series. These instances were categorized into distinct types, with swear words or taboo language accounting for 30.5%, minimal responses or backchanneling comprising 27.7%, direct questions representing 20.7%, compliments based on skills at 11%, and explicit commands making up 10.1% of the total. The study delves into the various purposes associated with men's language features. These purposes encompass expressions of masculinity, establishment of dominance, facilitation of rapport, concealment of vulnerability, and negotiation of social hierarchies within diverse cultural contexts. In contrast, women's language features typically serve to express uncertainty, convey emotions, elicit responses, soften utterances, and emphasize points. The distinctiveness of men's language features lies in their inclination towards asserting dominance, taking specific actions, offering compliments, and gathering specific details, reflecting the multifaceted nature of gendered communication dynamics within the series.

Abstract

This article explores the impact of the death of Mahsa Amini, a woman, at the hands of Iran's moral police, Gasht Ershad, and the subsequent emergence of protests against the country's religious authorities. The central argument delves into the examination of the Religious Authority's role in preserving Islamic values within Iranian society while seemingly encroaching upon the right to freedom of religion, particularly the choice to wear a headscarf. The study reveals that the authoritarianism exhibited by religious authorities in Iran is closely tied to the justification provided by Shi'a theology itself. Furthermore, the influential role of wilāyāt al-Faqīh is instrumental in the gradual establishment of mandatory hijab laws. Ultimately, Mahsa Amini's death is seen as a potential catalyst for re-evaluating the hijab rule amid Iran's political instability, although it does not necessarily undermine the overall authority of religious figures in the country.

Abstract

This study aims to further investigate the effectiveness of online counselling and client satisfaction of RILIV app users.  This research uses a cybernetic psychology approach to explore the process of information exchange between psychologists and clients, as well as the trust built through technological intermediaries.  The method used in this research is a qualitative method with data collection through interviews. The research subjects included 1 psychologist involved in the RILIV app and 1 client who had received services through the platform. Through cybernetic analysis, the results showed that the cognitive process of information processing plays an important role in the communication process between psychologists and clients.  However, challenges in online counselling, such as the lack of signals and the inability to see facial expressions and gestures directly, can affect the effectiveness of cognitive processes. Therefore, effective online counselling requires a careful integration of technology with an approach that takes into account the changing mindsets and reflections of individuals, as well as efforts to overcome communication barriers that may arise in a virtual environment.
