Abstract

The present study is concerned with mixed languages in the speech of a bilin- gual child, in Indonesian and Javanese. It is a cross-sectional study. The data of this study are in the form of sentences containing mixed languages. There are 50 sentences used as the data that are collected through observation and note taking. The collected data are then analyzed using descriptive method. The data analysis has revealed that the child’s speech does contain elements from both languages: Indonesian and Javanese. The language mixing occurs at mostly all linguistic lev- els. The syntax, the morphology, and lexicon are formed or taken from both lan- guages. The analysis also reveals that the child is still at the initial level of a bilin- gual. He has one lexical system with words from both languages. He also uses a mixed syntactical system. Both are evidence that he is a simultaneous bilingual, a bilingual from the start. Such language mixing is so common among normal bilinguals. A child who grows up simultaneously learning two or more languages usually goes through such a phase. This also makes possible that the child has been exposed to a mixed language input. Key Words: Bilingual children, language mixing, mixed languages.

Abstract

The study examines the local discernment of Javanese community in Central Java, DIY, and in East Java, viewed from the work of farmer and fisher which is reflected in their expression and linguistic category of Javanese language. The samples of the study are farmers in the village Wonosari (on the hill of Gunung Kawi, Malang, East Java),  Kemuning Sari (Jember, East Java), Petung Kriyana (Pekalongan, Central Java), fishers of the south coast in the village Puger (Jember, East Java) and those in the village Kemadang (Gunung Kidul, DIY). The data were collected by using eth- nography and ethno-science methods in the framework of ethno-linguistics. The study shows that based on the Javanese linguistic expression and category, there is a myth of the Javanese farmers represented in the ritual ceremony of rice pre-plantation as the reflection of thank to god “Dewi Sri”. The myth is still contained within the register “wiwitan” as managed by the leader of ceremony. So, there is an enclosed Javanese life style within to care to vertical and horizontal human relation in nature. Such phenomena also occur in the Javanese fishers in the south coast, i.e. in their local understanding to keep the natural force which may sometimes threaten their safety when working on the sea or when they have to meet the natural symbol “Nyi Rara Kidul”. Among the related registers to use are “labuhan kapat” ‘thanksgiv- ing’, and “selametan petik laut” (every the Syura month 15th). This reflects the Javanese life style’s care to the natural, social, and thought ecology. The Javanese worth culture asset represents the local discern crystallization which has been en- closed within the Javanese linguistic expressions and categories. Key words:    local discernment, ranah bahasa petani dan nelayan, ethno-linguistics, ethno-science, dan ecology.

Abstract

This article presents the linguistic phenomena in the text of Suharto’s cases both by the pros and cons sides. The texts are taken from internet accessed on May 30.2008. The analysis used is referring to Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis: phe- nomenology-interpretative and the combination of both qualitative and quantita- tive approaches. However, the analysis applies Halliday’s Systemic Functional Gram- mar, especially in the system of its transitivity. The result shows that there is a contradictory in the act sequence between the pros and cons sides. The pros texts are more humane than the cons ones. Moreover, the pros genres are narrative and recount, and they tend to be emosional, while the cons one is report and tends to be rational. The ideology within the pros text is humanism and feudalism, while within the cons one is democratism/equality. Key words: makna ideasional, teks, sistem transitivitas, CDA, dan genre.

Abstract

Politeness becomes important in speech when what is about to be said has the potential to threaten the Hearer’s face. Often in communication it is necessary to say something that would threaten the other person’s face. In other words, Face Threatening Acts (FTA) are committed when the speech behavior is going to po- tentially fail to meet the Hearer’s positive or negative face needs. Doing FTA is a normal speech behavior and is not seen as a problem in itself. The problem arises when the FTA fails to be executed appropriately in order to mitigate potential problems that could result from doing the FTA. Prostitutes are considered as marginalized people, and then women as sub group tend to speak more politely. There are many subordinate groups which have their own set of communication rules, apart from the universal rules. There are different levels of required polite- ness and different ways of being polite, but all people have the need to be appreci- ated and protected, which Brown and Levinson call face needs. This study found interesting features in the way the subjects manipulate and manage their interac- tions in order to get their intended message across employed six positive and seven negative politeness strategies. Key words: FTA, Indirectness, Positive and Negative politeness.

Abstract

The normal pronunciation of diphthong lies in putting the prominence or length to the nucleus vowel and gliding to the second one. However, this is not as the mostly phenomena of Javanese Learners of English (JLE)’s way of pronouncing diphthong. JLE tends to make shifts in pronouncing the quality of diphthong, one of which is a gliding decrease or omission. The data are collected by techniques of recording and demonstration. The data analysis uses techniques of comparing and contrasting be- tween JLE’s pronunciation and Received Pronunciation (RP). To amount of frequency in comparing JLE’s and RP, the percentage of the highest occurrence can be indi- cated. The result shows that JLE’s pronunciation of diphtong tends to reduce the fortis of nucleus before gliding or there is no gliding in the second vowel. Key words: sound shift, JLE, SPE, gliding, fortis, and pronunciation quality.

Abstract

This article mainly deals with the Plumpungan manuscript discourse, an ancient stone inscription found in the Salatiga area. The manuscript dates back to the 8th century and is one of the main historical sources of the Salatiga municipality. There is a tight connection involving the above mentioned inscription with the legitimacy of the Javanese court at that time, as well as with the monarch, who was seen as half- man, half-deity. The monarch drew on the labor of his subjects in maintaining reli- gious sites to ensure his place on earth, and in heaven. The Plumpungan manuscript was a ‘legal document’ used to reassure inhabitants of the area that the monarch is the legitimate ruler, and to prevent further revolt. The monarch’s subjects in the Salatiga area at the time were farmers disheartened with high taxes and the fear of volcanic eruptions, which later caused great migrations to East Java. Consequently, the mon- arch, using the Plumpungan manuscript as a medium, decreed that the Hampra vil- lage (present-day Salatiga) become a tax-free area due to the excellent care that its citizens provided for the religious sites, in addition to the obeisance shown to the monarch. It becomes clear, however, that all the way through the discourse analysis, the king wanted to ensure his legitimacy. Socio-historical context confirms that the monarch, Bhanu, was a successful ruler who held power over four regions, analogi- cally with Indra, the king of all deities. Discourse analysis is detained under three main dimensions, which is grammatical, lexical and contextual, unified from be- ginning to end in a particular style that reveals genuinely hidden meaning.  Key words: manuscript, Plumpungan, kodikologi, dan analisis stilistika.

Abstract

As a social practice, language is used to persuade, influence, argue, refuse, maintain, and to response one’s reaction. Using language, one may practically pro- duce and reproduce authority. This article deals with the symbolic fight and the mechanism of symbolic force within politics discourse in written media. The analy- sis technique used is critical discourse analysis, especially in the interaction be- tween language and social structure. The result shows that the symbolic fight in the written media represents the practice of continuing the doxa by the orthodoxa group and of attacking it by the heterodoxa group. The strategies of fighting the doxa are by showing the orthodoxa group’s weaknesses, arousing the enmity within the group, comparing the orthodoxa group to others, and by using SARA and com- munity issues. The mechanism of the symbolic force used by the ortodoxa is the use of euphemism and censor. Key words: kekuasaan simbolik, doxa, orthodoxa, SARA, dan wacana politik.

Abstract

As a system of symbol, the language of Holy Quran has interesting phenomena because there are many concrete illustrations of Heaven and its delicacies explained inside, for example, Heaven symbolized as garden containing fruits (kurma and grape), drinks (beer, milk, honey), accessories (gold bracelet, pearl), and (silk) cloths; and beautiful wives like angels. Such an illustration is contradictory to the most Moslems’ belief for they assume that based on the Quran and Hadith, Heaven is abstract. This article is aimed to reveal “the ideology” beyond the Heaven and its delicacies viewed from semiotics. The study shows that behind the symbols of Heaven and its delicacies, there is a spiritualistic-materialism ideology. The Quran includes such symbols because the Arabian community thinks that Heaven (as garden) rep- resents symbol of particular material properties which can be gained by anyways to fulfil the material needs. In this case, the Quran is to motivate the Moslems have the spiritual belief and perform good deed that this represents a symbol of revenge for them. Key words: Semiotics, Mitos, Ideologi, Surga, dan Jannah
