Abstract

The population of people who speak English as an additional language outnumbers those who use English as first language. As it becomes an international language, English is offered as a subject in many countries at various educational institution levels. For many years, British English and American English became the monocentric model and assumed to be the „best‟ reference for the purpose of teaching English around the world. However, nowadays, World Englishes (WEs), English as an International Language (EIL) and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), scholars have questioned the privilege owned by the speakers of American and British English. Along with this, the contact between local languages and English has shaped the local varieties of English around the globe. This situation raises a question of whether the two privileged models are still relevant. Furthermore, WEs, EIL and ELF scholars believe that each country has its own right to determine which model to be adopted for pedagogical purpose. This belief implies that pluricentric model in which local varieties of English are adopted is eligible for teaching model in the countries where English is used. Indonesia is a country with complex language diversity. It has more than 700 regional languages as the first language and Bahasa Indonesia as the national language for its speakers. As a result of contact between these regional languages as well as Bahasa Indonesia with English, Indonesia has developed multiple layers of local varieties of English. Hence, the pluricentric model in which local varieties are accommodated seems feasible to be adopted for pedagogical purpose in Indonesia. This paper argues that from the perspectives of WEs, EIL and ELF the pluricentric model is suitable to be adopted in Indonesia. In addition, it proposes ways in which pluricentric model can be implemented in teaching English in Indonesia.

Abstract

The nature of English as an International Language (EIL) has significant implicationsin the area of English Language Teaching (ELT). The current essay willreview the implications of EIL in three different areas: research on attitudes towardsvarieties of English, research on methods of improving non-native speakers’intelligibility, English teaching curriculum and materials for teaching pronunciation.Despite the debate of appropriateness of native speakers’ accent as modelsfor teaching pronunciation, the findings from most of the research on attitudestowards varieties of English suggest the students’ preferences towards native speakers’accent. In the mean time, the research on methods of improving non-nativespeakers’ intelligibility indicate the necessity of giving more emphasis on teachingsuprasegmental features such as intonation and stress to non-native speakers. Atthe curriculum level, although the experts have proposed some ideas of how EILshould be, the implementation of such curriculum might be difficult to realize insome countries. With regards to pronunciation teaching materials, many Englishpractitioners recommend the use of authentic materials that incorporate students’local culture in the classroom.

Abstract

The normal pronunciation of diphthong lies in putting the prominence or length to the nucleus vowel and gliding to the second one. However, this is not as the mostly phenomena of Javanese Learners of English (JLE)’s way of pronouncing diphthong. JLE tends to make shifts in pronouncing the quality of diphthong, one of which is a gliding decrease or omission. The data are collected by techniques of recording and demonstration. The data analysis uses techniques of comparing and contrasting be- tween JLE’s pronunciation and Received Pronunciation (RP). To amount of frequency in comparing JLE’s and RP, the percentage of the highest occurrence can be indi- cated. The result shows that JLE’s pronunciation of diphtong tends to reduce the fortis of nucleus before gliding or there is no gliding in the second vowel. Key words: sound shift, JLE, SPE, gliding, fortis, and pronunciation quality.

Abstract
