Abstract

Pieter Elberveld is a story written based on the historical facts of the revolt of an Indo-German descendant against the Dutch colonial government in Batavia. The revolt got a lot responses from different writers, either local, Dutch, or Chi- nese, including Tio Ie Soei. Giving the focus on the representation, this article at- tempts to give answers, based on the postcolonial perspective, to the following questions: (1) how was the revolt represented by the author, (2) what did political identity the author have, and (3) what were textual and political strategies em- ployed in the story. In order to answer those questions, this article gives the focus on the image of the indigenous people, space structures, and text purposes in the representation framework of the postcolonial study. Key words: representation, Tio Ie Soei, Pieter Elberveld, and pascakolonial

Abstract

The existence of focus in a sentence can be recognized from the available mark- ers used. Elements of sentence being focussed get “specific attention” within an utterance. The specific elements “are separatd” from the others by means of cer- tain strategies and markers. The strategies and markers include, among others: (1) the order, such as preposing the focussed elements; (2) the use of focussed mark- ers, such as the addition of pewatas (definite), relator yang, clitics –nya, conjunc- tion bahwa, and the word juga; and (3) the construction of specific focus, con- structions which intrinsically posite the distribution of focus by making constrast and repetition. Key words: fokus, piranti, pengedepanan, dan penambahan.

Abstract

In many languages in the world, there are two tendencies of word formation: (1) word formation which changes the lexical identity (derivation), and (2) word formation which keeps the lexical identity (inflection). The morphology process in verbs in Indonesian is divided into affixational derivation, inflectional derivation. The affixational derivation process which derive the verb lexemes uses deriva- tional affixes, meanwhile the affixational inflection process which derive the word forms (grammatical words) uses inflection affixes. The function of derivational affix is to derive the intransitive verbs and/or to derive the transitive verbs. The function of inflectional affix is to derive the grammatical words. Key words: morphology process, derivation, inflection, verb, dan leksem.

Abstract

The discourse of ritual may be one of the clearest and most fundamental mani- festations of language in its ecological setting. It simultaneously manifests and re- creates the three dynamic systems of sociality—communication, culture, and com- munity. In this paper we examine the language in betungkal, a traditional anoint- ing ceremony of West Kalimantan. The language is characterized by complex pat- terning, showing by both constant repetition and variation, and thus demonstrates the fundamental processes of predictability and creativity by which every form of linguistic communication operates. It is a paradigmatic example of how language is taught and reinforced, from discourse as embedded in the environment, to a community’s members of whatever age. At the same time it inevitably teaches and reinforces the community’s identity and its cultural values and practices. Key words: ecological approach, anointing, ritual art, and betungkal.

Abstract

Teaching literature cannot be separated from the existence of literary works. Teaching literature at school can be a tool to improve the lack of students’ attitude and morality by introducing and delivering the masterpiece values of Indonesian literary works to the students. By reading the literary works, our nation’s experi- ences—sadness-happiness, bitterness-sweetness, and cleverness-stupidness expe- riences—which occur in the literary works can enrich their religious faiths and make them to be the wise individuals in sharing their own life. This will lead them until they grow up and they will have the fruitful knowledge. One of the main problems occuring in the literature teaching is the mixing of a part of the Indone- sian language teaching materials. Abstract

Ad-Dûdah wats-Tsu‘bân ‘worm and snake’ is an arabic play which represents the condition of Egypt society in conquering French imperialism. So the ideas of arrousing this play is due to the confusion, disruption, and internal and vertical conflicts within Egyptians. They made such a reaction because they couldn’t find a leader who could help and protect them. Therefore, the appearance of Sulaiman Al-Jausaqi was thought as a figure who can calm them down. He was a religious man who concerned much on the problems of the society. This kind of hero was the one who successively made a strategy to fight against the French imperialism to the end of his dead as Syahid. Besides, a more alive scene and coherence of this play can be seen as in another heroic character from France, Napoleon Bonaparte. Key words: konflik internal dan vertikal, imperialisme, syahid, dan koherenitas.
